Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete View of Puseyism: Exhibiting From Its Own Writings; Its Twenty-Two Tenets, With a Careful Refutation of Each Tenet; Also, an Exposure of Their Tendencies IN the year 1833, a spirit of liberality having been evinced by government towards Dissenters and Catholics, a part at least of the Established Church of England began to take alarm, imagining that encroachments were made upon it by the civil power. This alarm was taken particularly by the Oxford clergy; who even feared that, at length, the Apostolical Church would be for saken, degraded, nay trampled on and despoiled by the state and people of England. And since it appeared to have been much in accordance with public opinion, such state of things was considered by them as nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of the Principles and Tendencies of Dr. Pusey's Sermon on the Eucharist: In a Series of Letters to a Friend You have, then, read attentively the sermon of Dr. Pusey, which excited so strong a sensation at the time of its delivery, and the publication of which was so eagerly expected. It was not, I must confess, without surprise and concern, that I heard from your own lips, how deeply your mind had been im pressed, and how much your views had been changed by the perusal of this discourse. I cannot think that you have con sidered the subject with sufficient deliberation; I must there fore, as a friend, beg you to revise your decision, and to give a candid consideration to a few remarks which, in the spirit of christian friendship, I wish to make. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Puseyism Unmasked: Sketches for the Times On one point the writer is anxious not to be mis understood. NO term is employed in the following pages, except to characterize a system, and as a means Of doing so intelligibly, without having recourse to circum locution. To the system also, strictly, is any expression of hostile feeling confined. And this strong feeling of decided opposition has been the result of careful inves tigation, and derived from an acquaintance with the writings delineating this theory, from the time of the first systematic efforts for its propagation, in the com mencement Of the publication of the Tracts for the Times, now about seven years ago. The writer fully believes that there are many individuals, superior to their system, failing clearly to apprehend its evils, and themselves deceived by it; and such may be startled, to find themselves called upon to admit, as the sentiments of their party, statements drawn from these writings, which shock their better feelings, and in which they dare not coincide. May the fearful tendency and anti-scriptural nature of the creed here laid open to their view prove a timely warning. May others also be deterred from rushing into the same snare. And lastly, may every reader seriously reflect, that a mere acquiescence Of the judgment, in any creed, however scriptural, is not re ligion. Freedom from error, therefore, in regard to that nominal belief, will not secure our eternal safety. It is the religion Of the heart, the faith Of the Gospel, carried out into the life, which alone can avail. The Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character and Fatal Tendency of Puseyism, Defined and Exposed: Being a Course of Lectures Delivered in the Temperance Street Chapel, Toronto There are few, if any, forms of error, but what have their counterpart in the earliest ages of our holy religion, and for which an effectual antidote may not be found in the Word of God. The great apparent diversity of deadly doctrines and practices which so bewilder the superficial enquirer, re solve themselves into a few simple principles, to the mind of the close-thinking man all false doctrine has its origin with the father of lies- all aflinity with such a fountain, must be evil in its nature and tendency-the tree ts known by its fruituthe course of the deepest stream is revealed by movements on its surface so the deep enmity of the fallen heart, and its close alliance With the great spirit of evil, are every, where visible in the counter currents, within and aroun which lead men away from the serene, simple, sublime and s doctrines of God our Saviour and by app ings through the eye and ear, beguile men into the subtle meshes of the net of antiquity, venerable establishments, eccle siastical and traditional authority and doctrine. But to us there is in religion one King, Priest, Sacrifice, Fountain of Salvation, Law Court of Appeal, and but one, Jesus Christ-and the glorious Gospel of the blessed God. Book Demagogue

Download or read book Demagogue written by Larry Tye and published by Houghton Mifflin. This book was released on 2020 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of the most dangerous demagogue in American history, based on first-ever review of his personal and professional papers, medical and military records, and recently unsealed transcripts of his closed-door Congressional hearings In the long history of American demagogues, from Huey Long to Donald Trump, never has one man caused so much damage in such a short time as Senator Joseph McCarthy. We still use "McCarthyism" to stand for outrageous charges of guilt by association, a weapon of polarizing slander. From 1950 to 1954, McCarthy destroyed many careers and even entire lives, whipping the nation into a frenzy of paranoia, accusation, loyalty oaths, and terror. When the public finally turned on him, he came crashing down, dying of alcoholism in 1957. Only now, through bestselling author Larry Tye's exclusive look at the senator's records, can the full story be told. Demagogue is a masterful portrait of a human being capable of immense evil, yet beguiling charm. McCarthy was a tireless worker and a genuine war hero. His ambitions knew few limits. Neither did his socializing, his drinking, nor his gambling. When he finally made it to the Senate, he flailed around in search of an agenda and angered many with his sharp elbows and lack of integrity. Finally, after three years, he hit upon anti-communism. By recklessly charging treason against everyone from George Marshall to much of the State Department, he became the most influential and controversial man in America. His chaotic, meteoric rise is a gripping and terrifying object lesson for us all. Yet his equally sudden fall from fame offers reason for hope that, given the rope, most American demagogues eventually hang themselves.
