Book excerpt: Pursuit and Other Poems offers a new collection of poetry presented in two parts, each of which highlights an extreme event that is part of a romantic experience. The first part is entitled Ode in Emerging from an Overdose, a single long poem that describes author David J. Murrays feelings when he was rescued from an unpremeditated suicide attempt. The second part is entitled Pursuit and contains 114 poems that chronicle Murrays emotional experiences with unrequited love. Deeply personal and yet universal in nature, Murrays verse speaks to the hope and heartbreak of the human experience with love. If Revisited If you can grab your woman too abruptly, If you forget that her birthday is today, If you assume your desire for her is equalled By her desire for a romp with you in the hay, If you dare think a fuzzy morning stubble Turns her right on, and that she desires you more, If you assume that it is her bounden duty To have the dishes done the night before, If you dare think that your mind analytical Is prejudice-free and objective more than hers, And that her place is really in the kitchen And not among lites or raconteurs, Then you will trail behind her in the mall, While she looks out for someone rich and tall.

Book Attention Equals Life

Download or read book Attention Equals Life written by Andrew Epstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry has long been thought of as a genre devoted to grand subjects, timeless themes, and sublime beauty. Why, then, have contemporary poets turned with such intensity to documenting and capturing the everyday and mundane? Drawing on insights about the nature of everyday life from philosophy, history, and critical theory, Andrew Epstein traces the modern history of this preoccupation and considers why it is so much with us today. Attention Equals Life argues that a potent hunger for everyday life explodes in the post-1945 period as a reaction to the rapid, unsettling transformations of this epoch, which have resulted in a culture of perilous distraction. Epstein demonstrates that poetry is an important, and perhaps unlikely, cultural form that has mounted a response, and even a mode of resistance, to a culture suffering from an acute crisis of attention. In this timely and engaging study, Epstein examines why a compulsion to represent the everyday becomes predominant in the decades after modernism and why it has so often sparked genre-bending formal experimentation. With chapters devoted to illuminating readings of a diverse group of writers--including poets associated with influential movements like the New York School, language poetry, and conceptual writing--the book considers the variety of forms contemporary poetry of everyday life has taken, and analyzes how gender, race, and political forces all profoundly inflect the experience and the representation of the quotidian. By exploring the rise of experimental realism as a poetic mode and the turn to rule-governed "everyday-life projects," Attention Equals Life offers a new way of understanding a vital strain at the heart of twentieth- and twenty-first century literature. It not only charts the evolution of a significant concept in cultural theory and poetry, but also reminds readers that the quest to pay attention to the everyday within today's frenetic world of and social media is an urgent and unending task.

Book excerpt: If Sharpeis wrote sonnets and Labradors wrote limericks, of what would they muse? Jessica Swaim re-envisions classic literature through a roundup of cultured hounds including Rover Frost, Emily Doginson, and Edgar Allan Pug. Poems range from the savory “Shall I Compare Thee to a Steak Fillet,” to the reflective “Sizing Up Shoes on a Soulful Evening” and the mysterious “The Maven,” each with a cunning twist that will leave you grinning. The poets are also brought to life with distinguished portraits by Chet Phillips and insightful biographies. Jessica Swaim’s favorite activities include long walks on a loose leash, napping in front of a fire, and rolling belly-up in the grass. She loves to jump the fence in search of adventure, but the best part is always coming back home, to her wee ranchette in Colorado. Chet Phillips is a freelance illustrator. He has created work for advertising agencies, design firms, books, newspapers, and magazines since the early ’80s. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Julie, and two tabby cats.

Book The Pursuit of Harmony

Download or read book The Pursuit of Harmony written by Gustav Heldt and published by Cornell East Asia Series. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heian court of the late ninth and early tenth centuries represents one of the most innovative and influential periods in the history of Japanese poetry. It witnessed the creation of entirely new forms of verse in poetry matches, screen poems, and officially sponsored anthologies, none of which had a precedent in earlier times. At the apex of these phenomena lay compilation of the Kokin wakashu (Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern), whose status as the first imperial anthology of native poetry would make it integral to Japanese court culture for centuries afterward. Despite the enormous historical significance of these new forms of poetry and the marked interest displayed by powerful individuals in patronizing them, however, little sustained attention has been paid to the ties between the practices of producing and performing verse and processes of economic, ideological, political, and social change in this period. This book is intended to address such issues through an investigation of the ways in which different members of the court community deployed poems in the pursuit of power.

Showers in the a.m. The threat they say is moving from the east. The sheriff's club says Not now. Not nokindofhow. Not never. The children's minds say Never waver. Air fanned by a flock of hands in the old funeral home where the meetings were called [because Mrs. Oliver owned it free and clear], and that selfsame air, sanctified and doomed, rent with racism, and it percolates up from the soil itself . . . In this National Book Award finalist and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, C.D. Wright returns to her native Arkansas and examines explosive incidents grounded in the Civil Rights Movement. In her signature style, Wright interweaves oral histories, hymns, lists, interviews, newspaper accounts, and personal memories—especially those of her incandescent mentor, Mrs. Vittitow—with the voices of witnesses, neighbors, police, and activists. This history leaps howling off the page. C.D. Wright has published over a dozen works of poetry and prose. Among her honors are the Griffin Poetry Prize and a MacArthur Fellowship. Book Black Hole and Other Poems

Download or read book Black Hole and Other Poems written by David J. Murray and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Hole and Other Poems, a new compilation of verse by poet David Murray, focuses on the role played by hunger for power in reducing the success of heterosexual romantic relationships. Divided into four parts, this collection explores the topic in a wide variety of styles and approaches. The first part of the collection, 'Poems in a Lighter Vein', interprets the familiar vampire story as being an allegory of common male fantasies of having power over many 'brides', and most of its verses are satirical in nature. The second part, 'Black Hole, ' contains examples based upon Murray's experiences of the personal power, all too easily abused, exerted by men over women. 'Treading Water, ' the third part, describes Murray's feelings when he found himself forced to compete with a male rival to see which of the two could exert the most power over a particular female's affections. In the fourth and final part, 'Bagatelles', each poem attempts to arouse, in only two lines, core emotional responses of the kind that are usually assumed to require longer poems. Satirical, gutsy and succinct by turns, this book explores the role of power in sexual relationships and the varying aspects of that power.
