Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an enormous growth of interest in the proteins produced by the trophoblast and, most recently, the endometrium, since the knowledge of placental and endometrial proteins is essential for the understanding of the physiology of reproduction. This volume contains reports by 25 internationally renowned experts in this field presented at the 6th International Congress of Placental and Endometrial Proteins which was held in Nagoya, Japan, 1--3 December 1987. Additionally, these proceedings give a unique overview of research done in Japan by publishing over 70 papers by Japanese researchers.

Book Secretin Cholecystokinin Pancreozymin and Gastrin

Download or read book Secretin Cholecystokinin Pancreozymin and Gastrin written by J. Erik Jorpes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning of this century physiology witnessed the creation of a new concept, the hormonal regulation of the work of the digestive organs. It was found that such essential functions as the flow of pancreatic juice and emptying of bile into the intestine were regulated by two hormones, secretin and cholecystokinin, respectively. Already in 1925 French authors attempted to measure the functional capacity of the exocrine pancreas by means of stimulation with secretin. The use fulness of the secretin test in this connection was definitely established by Scandinavian workers in the 1930's. In spite of the difficulties in obtaining secretin American authors succeeded in keeping the interest in the secretin test alive. The development in the 1950's of counter-current, ion exchange and chromato graphic techniques offered new possibilities in this field. The intestinal hormones were known to be relatively low molecular peptides and these could now be isolated in pure form. Thus secretin was isolated in 1961, and cholecystokinin in 1964. The newly developed methods for peptide analysis likewise soon brought us full information about the primary structure of the peptides. Gastrin, the specific stimulant of the gastric acid secretion, which was discovered in 1905 and acknowledged as a hormone in 1938, was the first of the gastrointestinal hormones for which the structure became known. This was in 1964. Synthesis soon followed. These developments are reviewed in the first chapter of the present volume.

If this joint enterprise has succeeded it is thanks to their competence, knowledge and application, for the editor's role is merely that of a coordinator. My thanks are also due to Springer-Verlag, the publishers, who gave me every possible assistance in seeing this volume to completion. Dr. D. Maroske was kind enough to prepare the Subject Index. And lastly I should like to voice my indebtedness to the Management of Sandoz Ltd., Basle, which allowed me to devote a not inconsiderable part of my time to the editing of this volume. I am also very grateful to a number of members of the staff of Sandoz Ltd.: to Mr. J.E. Smith, B. Sc., F.1. L., who translated some chapters and revised the language of others and to Miss Hannelore Straube and Miss Sonja Ebner for their valuable secreterial help.

Book Metabolic Turnover in the Nervous System

Download or read book Metabolic Turnover in the Nervous System written by Sidney Roberts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume V deals with the problems of turnover in the nervous system. "Turnover" is defined in different ways, and the term is used in different contexts. It is used rather broadly in the present volume, and intentionally so. The turnover of macromolecules is only one aspect; here "turnover" in dicates the simultaneous and coordinated formation and breakdown of macromolecular species. The complexities of cerebral protein turnover are shown in a separate chapter dealing with the synthesis of proteins, in another on breakdown, and in still another on the relationship of these two (showing how the two halves of turnover are controlled). The fact that most likely the two halves of protein turnover, synthesis and breakdown, are separated spatially and the mechanisms involved are different further emphasizes the complexity of macromolecular turnover. "Turnover" is used in a different context when the turnover of a cycle is discussed; but here again a number of complex metabolic reactions have to be interrelated and controlled; some such cycles are discussed briefly in this volume, additional cycles have been discussed with metabolism, and some cycles still await elucidation or discovery.

Book Aminopeptidases in Biology and Disease

Download or read book Aminopeptidases in Biology and Disease written by Nigel M. Hooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aminopeptidases in Biology and Disease provides a comprehensive review of the emerging role of aminopeptidases in a range of biological processes and disease situations. Processes as diverse as angiogenesis, antigen presentation, neuropeptide and hormone processing, pregnancy and reproduction, protein turnover, memory, inflammation, tumour growth, cancer and metastasis, blood pressure and hypertension all critically involve one or more aminopeptidases. The individual chapters have been written by experts in the field who have provided detailed accounts of the central roles played by various aminopeptidases in biology and disease.
