Before Walt Disney made history with Snow White, Lotte Reiniger created what is considered one of the first feature-length animated films: The Adventures of Prince Achmed. With the outset of World War II, Lotte had to leave her home in Germany, fleeing from place to place for years. But she never stopped creating. Through a love of fairy tales, a strong creative vision, and her uniquely expressive paper puppets, Lotte brought new possibilities to the world of film. Written in gorgeous lyrical prose, and illustrated with striking papercut illustrations that evoke Lotte’s classic silhouette creations, this captivating picture book will introduce readers to the life and art of an unsung creative trailblazer.

Book excerpt: Original illustrations by Gail E. Haley, winner of the Caldecott and Kate Greenaway Medals. Blanche is snatched from her husband and young child and taken to a state asylum for the insane. Her hopes for rescue are dashed when she discovers her husband Earle had her committed and declared her dead. Has the death of her newborn indeed driven Blanche to madness or is her ordeal part of Earle's plot to steal her inheritance? Blanche's redemption begins with her assignment to organize the new asylum library. At the same time she entertains her fellow inmates with experiences of fabulous meals and winged trips through the air and watches over her small daughter in the consciousness of birds. Are these supportive fantasies or delusions? Or are these experiences real? Earle's dark secrets eventually come to light and Blanche triumphs, but not without a tragedy that costs her a friend and champion. Inspiration for the story comes from the records of a North Carolina insane asylum in the 1920s. Reviews of works by Gail E. Haley: "Dramatic tale of love and its triumph over greed and wickedness. She embroiders rich imagery into both her prose and ... illustrations, which work beautifully with the text." -New York Times Book Review (Birdsong) "lucid, vibrant voice ... use of metaphor, hyperbole and dialect captures the playful spirit of mountain lore. -Publishers Weekly (Mountain Jack Tales) "Compelling story." -Lauren Peterson, Booklist (Two Bad Boys) "The author's prose style, essentially realistic but lightly infused with mysticism, subtly evokes a paradise lost," -Publishers Weekly (Two Bad boys: A Very Old Cherokee Tale)

Book excerpt: Historical inquiry forms the foundation for much research undertaken in art education. While traversing paths of historical investigation in this field we may discover undocumented moments and overlooked or hidden individuals, as well as encounter challenging ideas in need of exploration and critique. In doing so, history is approached from multiple and, at times, vitally diverse perspectives. Our hope is that the conversations generated through this text will continue to strengthen and encourage more interest in histories of art education, but also more sophisticated and innovative approaches to historical research in this field. The overarching objective of the text is to recognize the historical role that many overlooked individuals—particularly African Americans and women—have played in the field of art education, and acknowledge the importance of history and historical research in this digital age. This text opens up possibilities of faculty collaborations across programs interested in history and historical research on a local, national, and international level. By assembling the work of various scholars from across the United States, this text is intended to elicit rich conversations about history that would be otherwise beyond what is provided in general art education textbooks.

Book Puppetry in Education and Therapy

Download or read book Puppetry in Education and Therapy written by Edited by Matthew Bernier and Judith O'Hare and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-12-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Puppetry in Education and Therapy: Unlocking Doors to the Mind and Heart, one finds enormous variety, ingenuity, and creativity in the types of puppets, and the ways they are used in education and in therapy. Puppeteers, therapists, and educators, articulate what is meant by “puppetry in education” and “puppet therapy” and how it is the same or different from “puppet theatre”. They describe the unique characteristics and theory of puppetry in education and therapy, the skills it takes to be successful in these areas, the skills that are passed on to people who use puppets for personal expression, and how to assess the impact of puppets on learning or behavior change. Twenty-six authors discuss topics such as puppetry and the multiple intelligences; the process versus the product; using puppetry in schools to promote literacy, preserve cultural heritage, and teach music; how puppetry contributes to Core Curriculum Standards, the theoretical underpinnings of therapeutic puppetry, and a range of ways of facilitating growth and development. If you’re already using puppets, this book will inspire you to understand your work differently and to explore new possibilities. If you’re a teacher or a therapist and you’ve never used puppets before, it will open a whole world of possibilities. This book illustrates that puppetry arts can affect learning and behavior and that puppets indeed have the power to unlock doors to the mind and heart.

Book Cultural Storytelling Through Puppet Illustration Performance Art with High School Students

Download or read book Cultural Storytelling Through Puppet Illustration Performance Art with High School Students written by Maryam Rasoulzadeh and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proposed curriculum encourages American students to investigate their cultural backgrounds more closely by narrating a cultural story through artmaking. The main questions of creating this curriculum are as follows: firstly, how could we take the advantage of America’s multiculturalism in the art education classroom?Additionally, how could we combine illustration, puppetry, and performance art to narrate a cultural story? To find out the answers to the aforementioned questions, I conducted action research with a group of high school students, who were co-participants-- researchers, artmakers, representers, and critics. This helped me to learn about the different cultures of American students and observe their processes of artmaking. I began the project in my role as their teacher by modeling how someone could approach this project. I narrated an old Persian story titled “ Zahhak: The Legend of The Serpent King'' through a pop-up book to help students familiarize themselves with a Persian story and some of its features like Persian costumes, the appearance of people, architecture, the ways of making a different atmosphere and environment for every scene of the story. Afterwards, the students started remembering, researching and finding their favorite cultural story and summarizing it to begin their own artwork. This was accomplished by following various tasks described on different worksheets, sketching the main character, drawing a background image, illustrating the background image in watercolor and colored pencil, designing a puppet for the main character, documenting the artworks through photography and/or for earning extra points, recording their performance art by narrating and moving their puppet in front of their illustration. As a final task the students were asked to do a self-assessment in order to recognize their own weak and power points to improve them in their next projects. Consequently, the student learned about different cultures through cultural storytelling and artmaking. Since the students engaged both minds and most of their senses in the process of artmaking, they could internalize this experience, helping them to recall the stories later better. Hence, this curriculum could be a good method for all educators to utilize the specific features of their community and cultural backgrounds in order to make their art curriculums.

Book Making Puppets Come Alive

Download or read book Making Puppets Come Alive written by Larry Engler and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other performing arts, puppetry is perhaps the only art form in which directing, acting, writing, designing, sculpture, and choreography are combined. In effect, the performer is creating an artistic entertainment that will appeal to audiences of all ages — in homes, in theaters, and in classrooms. This lucid, easy-to-follow book was specifically conceived to teach beginners how to bring a hand puppet to life and how, with practice, to develop the skills needed to mount an amateur puppet show — complete with staging, costumes, and special effects. Award-winning puppeteers Larry Engler and Carol Fijan provide ingenious finger, wrist, and arm exercises that are crucial for creating a full working range of puppet motions and emotions. They also cover the elements of good puppet theatrical technique: speech, voice use, and synchronization; stage deportment and interactions; improvisation, dramatic conflict, role characterization, and more. Every detail is clearly explained and beautifully illustrated with photographs, specific chapters being devoted to the use of props, puppet voices and movements, the construction of simple stages and lighting effects, and much more. A splendid addition to the literature on this subject, Making Puppets Come Alive is "the best book on hand puppetry we've seen." — The Whole Kids Catalog.
