Download or read book Thirst written by Heather Anderson and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By age 25, Heather Anderson had hiked what is known as the "Triple Crown" of backpacking: the Appalachian Trail (AT), Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), and Continental Divide Trail (CDT)—a combined distance of 7,900 miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. A few years later, she left her job, her marriage, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into those mountains. In her new memoir, Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home, Heather, whose trail name is "Anish," conveys not only her athleticism and wilderness adventures, but also shares her distinct message of courage--her willingness to turn away from the predictability of a more traditional life in an effort to seek out what most fulfills her. Amid the rigors of the trail--pain, fear, loneliness, and dangers--she discovers the greater rewards of community and of self, conquering her doubts and building confidence. Ultimately, she realizes that records are merely a catalyst, giving her purpose, focus, and a goal to strive toward. Heather is the second woman to complete the “Double Triple Crown of Backpacking,” completing the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails twice each. She holds overall self-supported Fastest Known Times (FKTs) on the Pacific Crest Trail (2013)—hiking it in 60 days, 17 hours, 12 minutes, breaking the previous men’s record by four days and becoming the first women to hold the overall record—and the Arizona Trail (2016), which she completed in 19 days, 17 hours, 9 minutes. She also holds the women’s self-supported FKT on the Appalachian Trail (2015) with a time of 54 days, 7 hours, 48 minutes. Heather has hiked more than twenty thousand miles since 2003, including ten thru-hikes. An ultramarathon runner, she has completed six 100-mile races since August 2011 as well as dozens of 50 km and 50-mile events. She has attempted the infamous Barkley Marathons four times, starting a third loop once. Heather is also an avid mountaineer working on several ascent lists in the US and abroad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punishing Thirst - Grumpy Hero Dante Drago saves the day — for a price — he demands Savanna López stand in as his Fake Fiancé in this steamy Mafia Romance. Dante: She needs rescuing, but the very thought of having Savanna caged up, beholden to me, makes my pulse quicken and certain parts of my anatomy swell. From the second I meet her, I know I’ll devour her faster than a piece of the delicious carrot cake she makes. She’s on the run. I’ll keep her secret, but she owes me one. She’ll be under my lock and key, except for her shifts at the bakery. The only problem with my plan is that it backfires. Now she has my baby inside her, and there are two people to look after instead of one. Lord knows, I’m no angel. But I have to defend her, and keep our baby safe. Commanding Thirst - Made Man, Antonio Drago forgot most of what he learned in school — but bookworm Daphne Pruitt swallows him up heart and soul in this second chance, mafia romance. Antonio: Ever since walking her home every day from school, I fell hard for her. It was wrong then, but now she’s of age. And she needs my help again. Her sister’s in deep with the Cartel, and has gone missing. Right on schedule, it’s Daphne’s job to save her. It’s time someone took care of my baby girl for a change. I never professed to be above bribery, and I'm a dark devil after all, because once I specify my demands I can no longer resist her. Right then I know I’ll shock the hell out of her like I’ve been wanting to do since that first day I walked her home from high school. There. I admitted it. I’m a rotten scoundrel. The question is, will she forgive me? Obsessive Thirst - An Italian mobster. A missing fiancé. A forbidden obsession he cannot resist. Enzo Drago: I watch her like a hawk. Someone has to. My best friend’s daughter has a knack for getting herself into trouble. Turns out, protecting her isn’t as easy as I expected. She doesn’t realize I’m obsessed with her. Watching over her when she has no clue I’m there. Taking photos to stare at later on, privately, satisfying my urges while looking at her hot pics. My vow to keep my hands off her is impossible when she follows me around like a lost puppy. Does she tempt me on purpose? Or is that the wishful thinking of a beaten and battered, middle-aged gangster? Tessa’s clueless about how much trouble her outstanding debt to the Dragos will bring. I kept them at bay as long as I could, but we’re not running a charity operation here. Crazy chemistry aside, I’m the wrong guy for her — a monster disguised in an expensive suit. But no matter how hard I try to resist, I can’t stop thinking of making her my toy. Showing her the rules of my game. Risking just one touch to fulfill a forever fantasy. She is sunshine and I am darkness, and I assumed I controlled the stakes between us. But now Tessa’s in real trouble. You can bet your life on it, there’s going to be hell to pay. Captive Thirst - A cartel princess in disguise. An attempted kidnapping. One arranged marriage to strengthen the crime family syndicate. Carlos Drago: Her scent gave her away. Pure female. She hid her true identity, so she could race my colt, and I’ll be damned if she didn’t win. When enemies tried to snatch her up and stuff her in a trunk, I drove them off and took her home. The problem is, she makes me feel. Gabriela has no idea about my plans for us both, and when she finds out, that spark in her smile that I love so much might go away. Ours will be a marriage that unites our families. The very thought of her unhappiness makes this fearsome soldier, whose body is a deadly weapon, deeply, irrevocably afraid. I can’t lose her. Though my hands are scarred with murder, I lull her to sleep every night and kiss her eyes. She is my weakness. Despite being stronger than iron, I cannot resist her. When trouble comes looking for her, I hunt it down. She’s my family now. Nobody hurts my family and lives. No one. Download or read book Deadly Thirst written by Donna Goodenough and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deadly Thirst is the true story of four-year-old foster child Andy Setzer, who was murdered in Perris California August 2, 1999. Deadly Thirst follows Andy from conception to burial and reveals, in riveting investigative style, the series of deadly blunders that led Riverside County Child Protection officials to herd him into a one-way slaughter chute of foster care and straight into the hands of death. Andy's story is a frightening journey into the grim, dark side of foster care. The author paints a gripping psychological portrait of Andy's killer, Theresa Barroso and her morass of lies as she strives to place the blame solely upon her withdrawn and mentally challenged husband. Equally compelling is a behind-the-scenes look into the investigation that revealed Barroso's habitual need to vent her anger on a defenseless child. The sensational courtroom drama is undeniably graphic, an absolute page-turner, resulting in a verdict that will shock even the most ardent readers of chilling true-crime. Includes thirteen pages of evidentiary documents and crime scene photos.
Download or read book An Unquenchable Thirst written by Mary Johnson and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At seventeen, Mary Johnson saw a photo of Mother Teresa on the cover of TIME magazine, and experienced her calling. Eighteen months later she entered a convent in the South Bronx, to begin her religious training. Not without difficulty, this boisterous, independent-minded teenager eventually adapted to the sisters' austere life of poverty and devotion, but beneath the white-and-blue sari an ordinary woman faced the struggles we all share, with the desires of love and connection, meaning and identity. During her years as a Missionary of Charity, Mary Johnson rose quickly through the ranks and came to work alongside Mother Teresa. Mary grapped with her faith, her desires for intimacy, the politics of the order and her complicated relationship with Mother Teresa. Finally, she made the hard, life-changing decision to leave the order to find her own path, and eventually to leave the Church altogether. The story of this compellingly honest woman will speak to anyone who has ever grappled with the mysteries and wonders of life and faith.
Download or read book Punishing Disease written by Trevor Hoppe and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the very beginning of the epidemic, AIDS was linked to punishment. Calls to punish people living with HIV—mostly stigmatized minorities—began before doctors had even settled on a name for the disease. Punitive attitudes toward AIDS prompted lawmakers around the country to introduce legislation aimed at criminalizing the behaviors of people living with HIV. Punishing Disease explains how this happened—and its consequences. With the door to criminalizing sickness now open, what other ailments will follow? As lawmakers move to tack on additional diseases such as hepatitis and meningitis to existing law, the question is more than academic.

Download or read book T T Clark Companion to Atonement written by Adam J. Johnson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The T&T Clark Companion to Atonement establishes a vision for the doctrine of the atonement as a unified yet extraordinarily rich event calling for the church's full appropriation. Most edited volumes on this doctrine focus on one aspect of the work of Christ (for example, Girard, Feminist thought, Penal Substitution or divine violence). The Companion is unique in that every essay seeks to both appropriate and stimulate the church's understanding of the manifold nature of Christ's death and resurrection. The essays are divided into four main sections: 1) dogmatic location, 2) chapters on the Old and New Testaments, 3) major theologians and 4) contemporary developments. The first set of essays explore the inter-relationship between the atonement and other Christian doctrines (for example Trinity, Christology and Pneumatology), opening up yet further avenues of inquiry. Essays on key theologians eschew reductionism, striving to bring out the nuances and breadth of the contribution. The same is true of the biblical essays. The final section explores more recent developments within the doctrine (for example the work of Rene Girard, and the ongoing reflection on "Holy Saturday"). The book is comprised of 18 major essays, and an A-Z section containing shorter dictionary-length entries on a much broader range of topics. The result is a combination of in-depth analysis and breadth of scope, making this a benchmark work for further studies in the doctrine.
