Book excerpt: This report describes a pulsed hydrogen-fluoride laser which has been constructed at MRL. The laser delivers an energy of 7 J in a microsecond pulse from vibrational-rotational transitions in the wavelength region 2.6-3.1 micrometers. It simultaneously produces 1 mJ of energy in a 1 microsecond pulse from pure rotational transitions in the wavelength region 10-17 micrometers. Originator furnished keywords include: Chemical lasers, Hydrogen fluoride lasers, Electric discharge, Pulse discharge.

Book Pulsed Hydrogen Fluoride Overtone Chemical Laser Studies

Download or read book Pulsed Hydrogen Fluoride Overtone Chemical Laser Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of HF chemical lasers operating on overtone transitions, OTs, in a photolytically initiated, pulsed laser facility was conducted. The primary objective was to obtain comparisons of the specific energy performance of pulsed HF, chain reaction driven, chemical laser resonators when operating only on fundamental transitions, delta V = 1, and only on first overtone transitions, delta V = 2. The initial efforts were the buildup of the experimental test facility with which excellent performance as an FT HF laser was demonstrated. However, attempts to produce OT lasing using lamda- variable reflectivity mirror coatings (to promote and suppress, simultaneously, the OT and FT mechanisms) were only marginally successful, even though major facility modifications were made to reduce cavity losses, suppress FT superradiance (ASE), suppress parasitic modes and increase pulse duration. Finally, CW OT lasing was demonstrated using the OT optical components in a combustion-driven, blowdown test facility. A specific energy level, sigma = 266 w/gm/sec, was inferred from the measurements. HF Chemical lasers, HF Overtone lasers, Pulsed photolytically initiated chemical lasers.

Book Operating Characteristics Absorptivity Reflectivity Measurements and Pulse System Design of the NPS Naval Postgraduate School Hydrogen Fluoride Deuterium Fluoride Laser

Download or read book Operating Characteristics Absorptivity Reflectivity Measurements and Pulse System Design of the NPS Naval Postgraduate School Hydrogen Fluoride Deuterium Fluoride Laser written by E. L. Garcia and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hydrogen Fluoride/Deterium Fluoride Laser is a fast flow electrical discharge operated chemical laser. Refitting of the subsystems of the laser was completed and lasing was observed utilizing a 100 percent reflectance mirror and a 95 percent reflectance output coupling mirror. The maximum multiline output power obtained was 2.6 Watts at 19.0 kV and 475 mA. The data obtained was in general agreement with previously reported data. However, an increase in power output from 1.6 to 2.6 Watts was obtained by utilization of a Hipotronics power supply that enabled usage of higher output voltages for SF6 dissociation. Measurements were also taken over a variation of the He, SF6, H2 and O2 flow rates resulting in the change of optimum flow rates for the above listed gases. Target reflectivity/absorptivity measurements were taken and a dependence on incidence angle with the laser beam was found. For the P-doped Silicon wafer used, the power absorbed decreased over the range of 25 to 60 degrees. At the 25 degree angle approximately 95 percent of the incident power was absorbed. The reflected power was found to increase with the increase in target angle with approximately 95 percent of the incident power being reflected at 60 degrees. Originator-supplied keywords include: Hydrogen Fluoride/Deterium Fluoride Laser, Absorptivity/Reflectivity.

Book Hydrogen Fluoride Chemical Laser A Demonstration of Pure Chemical Pumping II New Concepts in Fast Mixing Flow Systems

Download or read book Hydrogen Fluoride Chemical Laser A Demonstration of Pure Chemical Pumping II New Concepts in Fast Mixing Flow Systems written by Joseph F. Spinnler and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes results of continuing experiments directed toward chemical lasers in a flow system and a single-pulse system. A new laminar diffusive-mixing system for obtaining very fast mixing rates is described. Conclusive evidence for lasing action of hydrogen fluoride in the single-pulse system is offered. Certain theoretical considerations are discussed. Fast flow velocities; fast, reproducible mixing; simple flow patterns; and fast, truly homogeneous initiation reaction have been recognized as critical factors in successfully achieving laser action in a continuous-flow hydrogen-fluorine system and several limitations inherent in the initial approach have been removed. Book Small High Repetition Rate HF and DF Lasers

Download or read book Small High Repetition Rate HF and DF Lasers written by Walter A. Riessler and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements are presented of the multiline spectral output, output power as a function of pulse-repetition rate, and V-I (voltage-current) characteristics of small pulsed hydrogen fluoride (HF) and deuterium fluoride (DF) lasers that have been operated at repetition rates up to 1 kHz. Results indicate that observed reductions in output power at high repetition rates are due to an insufficient gas flow that (1) allows the ground state population to build up, (2) reduces population inversion between the first vibrational state and the ground state, and (3) introduces discharge instabilities that severely limit the pulse-rate capabilities. Average powers are reported to vary linearly with pulse-repetition rate up to 400 Hz, with typical pulse energies of 10 and 4 mJ for small HF and DF lasers respectively with discharge lengths of only 10 cm. Book Rotational Relaxation Measurements and Resonant Phenomena in Laser Excited Hydrogen Fluoride

Download or read book Rotational Relaxation Measurements and Resonant Phenomena in Laser Excited Hydrogen Fluoride written by G. H. Lindquist and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rates for the transfer of rotational energy (R-R) in vibrationally excited HF gas were measured using a single laser pump-probe technique. The relaxation time was found to be inversely proportional to HF pressure in the mTorr range and the self-relaxation rate constant was determined. Rotational relaxation of HF gas due to the presence of additive gases was observed. The relaxation rate for H2 was measured. The temporal evolution of HF laser pulses was examined and compared with the vibrational fluorescence of the laser discharge and the temporal gain of the discharge. The importance of hydrogen in the discharge is discussed. Reported observations of several resonant processes include bleaching, self-induced transparency, optical nutations, and an anomalous increase of 40 in the refractive index.
