Book State of the Art in High power Microwaves

Download or read book State of the Art in High power Microwaves written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades since the presentation of the first experimental results, the study of high-power microwaves (HPM) has aimed at the production of microwave pulses with ever higher peak power and ever larger energy content. Drawing on the electrical pulsed power and relativistic electron beam technologies, a mix of sources have produced power levels in excess of 1 GW and pulse energies of tens to a thousand joules in both the centimeter and millimeter wavelength ranges. The potential for military applications of such powerful bursts became a major driving force for substantial research programs -- and considerable advancements -- in the United States and the former Soviet Union. The end of the Cold War and a reexamination of national priorities has diminished the momentum of military HPM development in these countries. Nevertheless, the field hasn't reached its limits, in capability or applicability, and one sees at present a diffusion of the technology across national borders. As examples, one sees commitments in the UK, France, and China to national programs aimed at the exploration of the defensive capabilities of HPM. The purpose of this paper will be to examine the state of the art in HPM at this juncture. We will look at: (1) Peak power production; (2) Pulse energy production and the phenomenon of pulse shortening at high peak power levels; (3) Coherent phasing of multiple high-power sources; (4) Compact HPM source development; and (5) Repetitive operation of sources. We will also briefly mention some emerging applications and offer some concluding thoughts.

Book Topics in HPM High Power Microwave Generation Coupling and Interaction

Download or read book Topics in HPM High Power Microwave Generation Coupling and Interaction written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document comprises a collection of technical notes on various aspects of high-power microwave (HPM) generation, coupling, and interaction. The notes were written between October 1983 and February 1986, and were originally distributed rather informally as Microwave Notes to members of the HPM community. It has since seemed worthwhile to edit and transcribe them, and to publish them as a single report. Time and resources did not permit either as detailed an editing job would have been desirable, or recalculation and plotting of the numerical results in a more elegant form. It is to be hoped, however, that this integrated document will prove useful to the community. The selection of topics addressed in the Microwave Notes was influenced by questions which arose at various stages of the author's involvement in HPM-related activities. The subject of pulse radiation from aperture antennas subject to turn-on time errors, for example, arose in the context of a proposed HPM generation scheme. Consideration of the scattering cross-section of a simple dipole and of its dual problem, the effective area of a thin slot, was motivated by the need to understand the penetration of such slot apertures by HPM pulses. Book Lack of Behavioral Effects of High Peak Power Microwave Pulses from an Axially Extracted Virtual Cathode Oscillator

Download or read book Lack of Behavioral Effects of High Peak Power Microwave Pulses from an Axially Extracted Virtual Cathode Oscillator written by Dennis L. Hjeresen and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of high-power microwave (HPM) generators capable of producing extremely high-peak-power pulses for defense, commercial, and biomedical applications (1,2) has raised concern for the safety of the personnel operating such equipment. Occupational safety standards for radiofrequency exposure are based on the average-power density of irradiation and may lack applicability in situations where peak-power density is quite high while average-power density is relatively low. A battery of behavioral experiments was conducted to evaluate possible biological effects of high-power microwave (HPM) pulses generated by the Transformer Energized Megavolt Pulsed Output (TEMPO) microwave emitter, an axially extracted Virtual Cathode Oscillator (VIRCATOR). Free space electromagnetic energy in the frequency range 2.01 to 2.57 GHz (mean frequency = 2.11 + or - 0.09 SD) was radiated by conical horn in a TM01 mode. The overall pulse width was approximately 85 ns, with maximum power densities ranging as high as 24.11 kW/cm sq. per pulse (mean peak-power density = 10.79 kW/cm sq. + or - 0.35 SEM). The results suggest that peak power is not as important as average power in causing deleterious biological effects. (kt).

Book High Power Microwave Weapons

Download or read book High Power Microwave Weapons written by Jack McGonegal and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the Department of Defense has shifted focus to near-peer competition, there has been a push to field technologies that will offer the United States a strategic advantage. The Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) has been designing, building, and testing technologies that can provide this advantage, but many have never made it to the operational inventory. One of those technologies is Pulsed-wave High Power Microwaves (HPM). HPMS has been in development for over 30 years and has seen significant advancements in the size, weight, and power of the weapon. These weapons started as large ground based systems, but in 2012 the technology had advanced to the point that AFRL placed it on an airborne platform. Since this technology demonstration, AFRL has continued to pursue advancements in this technology. HPMs also provide an opportunity to revisit an old nuclear targeting strategy, countervalue strikes. HPMs can be used to strike targets that are vital to the survival of the nation while negating collateral damage concerns. These weapons provide a unique capability to deter potential adversaries from taking action or compelling them to stop a course of action. These weapons are the type of disruptive technology the US needs to maintain its competitive advantage."--Abstract.
