The first volume studies AC/DC conversion, the second studies AC/ AC conversion, and the third DC/DC conversion. This final volume deals with DC/AC conversion, i.e. with inverters. At the output of an inverter fed by a DC voltage supply, this voltage is alternatively found with one polarity and then with the other; in other words, an AC voltage made up of square pulses is obtained. Filtering must be carried out if, as is normally the case, a virtually sinusoidal voltage is required: this problem of filtering underlies the entire study of inverters. In some applications, the load itself provides the filtering. In others, a filter is installed between the inverter and the load; however, as it will be shown in Chap. 2, in cases where the filtered voltage is at industrial network frequency and comprises only a single square-wave pulse per half-cycle, the filter becomes bulky and costly, and the results obtained are poor. Filtering problems explain the considerable development of inverters during the last years: - Firstly there is increasing use of pulse width modulation: each half-cycle is cut up into several pulses of suitable widths; this greatly simplifies filtering. The use of a chopping frequency which is much greater than the frequency of the fundamental components of the inverter output voltage and current has only been made possible by progress in the field of semiconductor devices.

Its dynamic behavior directly determines or influences four of the important characteristics of the power supply: • Stability of the feedback loop • Rejection of input-voltage ripple and the closely-related transient re sponse to input-voltage perturbation • Output impedance and the closely-related transient response to load perturbation • Compatibility with the input EMI filter Due to the complexity of the operation of the converter, predicting its dynamic behavior has not been easy. Without accurate prediction, and depending only on building the circuit and tinkering with it until the operation is satisfactory, the engineering cost can easily escalate and schedules can be missed. The situation is not much better when the circuit is built in the computer, using a general-purpose circuit-simulation program such as SPICE. (At the end of this book is a form for obtaining information on a computer program especially well suited for dynamic analysis of switching-mode power converters: DYANA, an acronym for "DYnamic ANAlysis. " DYANA is based on the method given in this book. ) The main goal of this book is to help the power-supply designer in the prediction of the dynamic behavior by providing user-friendly analytical tools, concrete results of already-made analyses, tabulated for easy application by the reader, and examples of how to apply the tools provided in the book.

This is accomplished by using frequency-modulation in addition to pulse-width-modulation. Zero-voltage switching will provide power converter designers an alternative for designing high-frequency converters with minimal transient turn-on losses, the predominant form of converter losses experienced in high frequency operation. High frequency operation will result in smaller reactive components, which produce higher power density converters, as well as increasing the transient response of the regulated converter. In addition to allowing for high frequency operation, the design exhibits many desirable power switch properties, such as limiting the peak voltage to the output voltage level and operating with the minimum possible current levels for a given power requirement. A circuit built and tested utilizing zero-voltage switching in a regulated boost converter verified the principles of operation for yielding a high-efficiency, high-frequency converter. (RH).

Steady-state analysis of pulse-width modulated (PWM) Z-bridge source DC-DC converter operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM) is given. Expressions describing waveforms of voltages across and currents through the all components of the PWM Z-bridge source DC-DC converter to operate in steady-state condition are derived. The output-to-input voltage conversion ratio for ideal (lossless) and non-ideal (lossy) conditions are derived. Expressions for the minimum Z-network inductance, the minimum filter inductance, and the minimum Z-network capacitor are derived to operate converter in CCM. To determine the total power loss in PWM Z-bridge source DC-DC converter, power loss expressions for each and every component and the overall efficiency of the PWM Z-bridge source dc-dc converter are determined. Using power loss expressions, the efficiency analysis graphs are plotted using MATLAB to obtain the suitable operating region for the PWM Z-bridge source DC-DC converter in terms of duty cycle, output current, and input voltage. An example of PWM Z-bridge source DC-DC converter is considered and steady-state analysis is performed in saber. The simulation results of designed PWM Z-bridge source DC-DC converter are used to validate the theoretical results. Plant characteristics of PWM Z-bridge source DC-DC converter are performed and the results are reported.
