Book excerpt: Suffering in the world has increased exponentially over the last eighty years. People are more stressed, anxious, and depressed than ever. At the same time, diseases like diabetes, IBS, migraines, ADHD, and insomnia are plaguing the populace like never before. Parallel to these developments, cultural norms and traditions are being abandoned at unprecedented levels and replaced with more ‘enlightened’ alternatives. People are deserting religious institutions that preach red lines of morality, opting for atheism and new-age spiritualism where they are free to supply their own truths. The institution of marriage is teetering on the brink of collapse under the weight of a fifty percent divorce rate, with young people preferring open relationships free from the burdens of monogamy and long-term commitment. Even the concept of two distinct and opposite genders, male and female, has been deemed outdated. Schools and social institutions now encourage elementary-age children to select from eighty different genders. Dream Wars tells the story of how this decline in the human condition directly results from a sinister plot put in motion after World War Two that has been tampering with people’s subconscious minds. A group of friends in China challenge the inevitability of this decay and attempt to shine a light on the subterfuge. What they discovered is startling, and their plan to combat this silent enemy is nothing short of miraculous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by music critic Alex Ross as "the most original musical thinker of our time" and having received innumerable accolades in a career spanning over fifty years, composer Steve Reich is considered by many to be America's greatest contemporary composer. His music, however, remains largely underresearched. Rethinking Reich redresses this imbalance, providing a space for prominent and emerging scholars to reassess the composer's contribution to music in the twentieth century. Featuring fourteen tightly focused and multifarious essays on various aspects of Reich's work--ranging from analytical, aesthetic, and archival studies to sociocultural, philosophical, and ethnomusicological reflections--this edited volume reveals new insights, including those enabled by access to the growing Steve Reich Collection at the Paul Sacher Foundation archive, the premier institution for primary research on twentieth-century and contemporary classical music. This volume takes on the timely task of challenging the hegemony of Reich's own articulate and convincing discourses on his music, as found in his Writings on Music (OUP, 2002), and breaks new ground in the broader field of minimalism studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violet Holt has already met Death once. After a failed suicide attempt, she finds herself dumped by her callous mother on the doorstep of her family’s desolate oceanside estate. With only the company of her estranged grandmother, comatose grandfather, and the monsters in her head, at least there was no one to interfere with her plans to try again on her eighteenth birthday. No one, except maybe Jack: a skeleton of a boy who says he’s there to rake her grandmother’s leaves, yet seems more experienced at stalking than grounds-keeping. She knows he’s keeping a secret behind his gentle smiles and aloofness, but it’s difficult for Violet to be put off by his untimely thin-air appearances when figuring out the mystery of his true identity makes for such a good distraction. Violet’s trauma is deeper than the wound on her wrist though, and it cannot be simply whisked away in a whirlwind of guessing games and pleasant gestures. She struggles to reconnect with her grandmother, find forgiveness for her mother, and closure with her grandfather’s dire condition, all while battling the strain of it all on her family. Even with a flicker of something hopeful blossoming within herself, Violet knows her birthday plans must be inevitable. Death wouldn’t be there for her if it wasn’t.

Book The Sacred Fullness

Download or read book The Sacred Fullness written by Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet (Thea) and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1985. Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, cosmologist, author, and teacher, living in the Palani hills of South India, begins a correspondence with a new student residing in New York City. Some years prior, after 18 years as a Catholic nun, the student left the religious life. She went on to become a psychotherapist, and explored many of the ‘New Age’ spiritual teachings gaining popularity in the West. Patrizia asks the student why none of these pursuits has provided the answers she was seeking. Why has she turned to Patrizia for answers? These letters reveal an entirely New Way of approaching the desire for inner peace, the pursuit of Truth, as well as the limits of 'personal enlightenment'. Heeding her teacher’s advice that she make a big leap into the unknown, the new student begins her studies. She finds that our mental race is ‘in transition’ to a Supramental consciousness now descending to earth: a new species is being born. Her old spiritual path and psychotherapy cannot ‘fill the void’ because humankind is moving up the evolutionary ladder. It is Sri Aurobindo’s yoga that offers a way to transform human nature; Patrizia’s contribution to his new vision is The Gnostic Circle. This diagram displaces the old astrology by offering a cosmology to help the student get the correct balance. No longer will her individual development be the central focus, Patrizia informs (25 August letter); rather all three aspects of the Divine reality become synthesised in the spiritual quest: God, cosmos and her own soul. ‘Mind you, this has never been done before’, she exclaims, ‘it has always been one or the other.’

Book Translation and Transgression in the Art of Shirin Neshat

Download or read book Translation and Transgression in the Art of Shirin Neshat written by Erin C. Devine and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precisely 30 years after the debut of her provocative photo-portraits, this book chronicles the early career of Iranian-American artist Shirin Neshat. In its first 20 years, Neshat’s work weaved viewers into complex readings of women and power in Iran. Yet her images also drew criticisms of exoticizing Muslim women, and later video installations were accused of lacking political assertion during stormy relations between the West and the Islamic world. Now broadly recognized as a social justice artist, this volume chronicles Neshat’s evolution from photography to film, from personal to political expression, and expands existing scholarship to investigate underserved contexts for her work, including the cinematic turn and emergent theories of globality in contemporary art. Neshat’s hyphenated identity was often attenuated by reductive and exoticizing discourses; therefore, this volume draws attention to her transnational methodologies, informed by strategies of appropriation, performativity, and embodiment while articulating Persian visual and literary traditions. Complicating simplistic ethnographies, her disruption of neo-Orientalist paradigms and representations has led audiences to reconsider Islamophobic, Islamism, and gender repressions that are political, psychological, and above all cross-cultural. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, photography, cinema studies, performance, transnational and global studies, women’s studies, and Iranian studies.
