Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulp and Paper Magazine of Canada, Vol. 20: A Weekly Magazine; July 6th, 1922 The principle bearing of the cooking operation upon the recovery process is in regard to the dilution of the liquors, which in turn determines the amount of work that will subsequently have to be done by the evaporation equip ment. As by far the greatest proportion of sulphate pulp made in this country is used in the manufacture of kraft papers, in which a high color is not essential, the usual procedure is to add to the chips in the digester sufficient chemicals in the form of white liquor to perform the cook ing and to add black liquor to make the total volume of liquids sufficient to cook all the chips. In this way the mill is spared the evaporation of a volume of water equal to the volume of the black liquor added, with the equiv aient saving of heat. The use of black liquor in the digester has another effect on the recovery, of which we have no explanation. When, for any reason, no black liquor is used in cooking, it soon becomes difficult to keep the incinerators producing the desired quality of black ash, although they are kept supplied with liquor of the same concentration as before.
