Book Achieving Regulatory Excellence

Download or read book Achieving Regulatory Excellence written by Cary Coglianese and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether striving to protect citizens from financial risks, climate change, inadequate health care, or the uncertainties of the emerging “sharing” economy, regulators must routinely make difficult judgment calls in an effort to meet the conflicting demands that society places on them. Operating within a political climate of competing demands, regulators need a lodestar to help them define and evaluate success. Achieving Regulatory Excellence provides that direction by offering new insights from law, public administration, political science, sociology, and policy sciences on what regulators need to do to improve their performance. Achieving Regulatory Excellence offers guidance from leading international experts about how regulators can set appropriate priorities and make sound, evidence-based decisions through processes that are transparent and participatory. With increasing demands for smarter but leaner government, the need for sound regulatory capacity—for regulatory excellence—has never been stronger.

Book excerpt: An investigation into how legislators have taken advantage of their positions—and of weak financial disclosure laws—to make millions. After a historic financial crisis led Congress to unprecedented economic intervention, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post began an investigation that pierced the secrecy of the deeply flawed financial disclosure system that governs the 535 men and women who draft the nation’s laws. Members of Congress directed millions of dollars to infrastructure projects near their residences and businesses, in some cases paving roads in front of their houses. They made major trades in the stocks of companies pressing them for legislation. They wrote laws favoring industries in which they were invested. They sponsored bills on which their own family members were paid to lobby. All of it is legal under the rules Congress has written for itself. Democracy Inc. shows the consequences of this system.

Book Road Vehicle Automation

Download or read book Road Vehicle Automation written by Gereon Meyer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume covers all relevant aspects of road vehicle automation including societal impacts, legal matters, and technology innovation from the perspectives of a multitude of public and private actors. It is based on an expert workshop organized by the Transportation Research Board at Stanford University in July 2013. The target audience primarily comprises academic researchers, but the book may also be of interest to practitioners and professionals. Higher levels of road vehicle automation are considered beneficial for road safety, energy efficiency, productivity, convenience and social inclusion. The necessary key technologies in the fields of object-recognition systems, data processing and infrastructure communication have been consistently developed over the recent years and are mostly available on the market today. However, there is still a need for substantial research and development, e.g. with interactive maps, data processing, functional safety and the fusion of different data sources. Driven by stakeholders in the IT industry, intensive efforts to accelerate the introduction of road vehicle automation are currently underway.
