Book Water Resilience for Human Prosperity

Download or read book Water Resilience for Human Prosperity written by Johan Rockström and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's human population now constitutes the largest driving force of changes to the biosphere. Emerging water challenges require new ideas for governance and management of water resources in the context of rapid global change. This book presents a new approach to water resources, addressing global sustainability and focusing on socio-ecological resilience to changes. Topics covered include the risks of unexpected change, human impacts and dependence on global water, the prospects for feeding the world's population by 2050, and a pathway for the future. The book's innovative and integrated approach links green and blue freshwater with terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem functions and use. It also links changes arising from land-use alteration with the impacts of those changes on social-ecological systems and ecosystem services. This is an important, state-of-the-art resource for academic researchers and water resource professionals, and a key reference for graduate students studying water resource governance and management.

  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Water written by David B. Brooks and published by IDRC (International Development Research Centre). This book was released on 2002 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication summarizes the results of three decades of IDRC-supported research on water supply. It demonstrates that some of the most powerful responses to water scarcities have been mounted at the community or local level - in households, farmers' fields, villages, and city neighbourhoods. With a focus on research findings, and failures, this book presents solidly grounded propositions for decision-makers and for researchers. It goes on to form a series of clear and pointed recommendations for policy design and future research efforts, and concludes with an eye to the future of water supply and a presentation of some of the key resources in the field."--BOOK JACKET.

This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, engaging, and highly authoritative volume enlightens readers on changes needed in the way society accesses, provides, and uses water. It further shines a light on changes needed in the way we use food, energy, and other goods and services in relation to water, and offers projections and recommendations, up to 2050, that apply to water access challenges facing the poor and the common misuse of water in industry, agriculture, and municipalities. Written by an unparalleled slate of experts convened by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the book takes on one of the most critical issues on the planet today. In a frank yet optimistic assessment of major developmental challenges, but also opportunities, facing future generations, the author elucidates linkages between water and a range of other drivers from various disciplinary and stakeholder perspectives. Ultimately portraying the belief that Humanity can harness its visionary abilities, technologies, and economic resources for increased wellbeing and sound stewardship of resources, the book presents an optimistic statement stressing actions scientists, policy makers, and consumers can and must take to meet the water management challenges of a warming planet anticipating nine billion inhabitants by 2050. This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Water Research Institute (NWRI) received funding to conduct reseach in support of management goals under annexes: 1. Chemical and ecosystem objectives; 2. Remedial action plans and lakewide management action plans; 12. Surveillance; Persistent toxic substances; 13. Non-point source pollution; 14. Contaminated sediments; 15. Atmospheric toxic substances; and 16. Groundwater. In addition, NWRI along with Canada's National Science and Engineering Research Council and the Great Lakes Environment Office jointly sponsored the Great Lakes University Research Fund. The major role of government research on the Great Lakes is to investigate and assess ecosytem function and health. This work is usually initiated in response to identified or suspected problems. Investigations of underlying causes often leads to the discovery of more complex problems. This report provides a summary of the research conducted by NWRI under GLAP 1. The information is organized according to the GLWQA annexes, since funding was provided specifically to acquire knowledge necessary to meet the objectives stated in each annex.
