Cette société coloniale, ses structures, ses composantes, ses dynamiques, son évolution et son devenir, ses réseaux de dépendance et de sociabilité constituent les principaux axes d'analyse de cette étude. De l'étude des différents groupes membres de la société coloniale, se dégagent des dynamiques à la fois opposées et complémentaires. Leurs objectifs sont en effet divers et souvent contradictoires. A la volonté politico-écongmique de colonisation voulue par Versailles répond une très nette indifférence des colons voire des représentants même du pouvoir. Au contrôle imposé par le ministère et ses relais dans la colonie (gouverneur, ordonnateur), répond le désir d'autonomie de certains (des membres du conseil supérieur par exemple). Chaque fonctionnaire, chaque colon n'a d'autre préoccupation que de s'enrichir (pour ceux qui disposent d'une certaine mise de fond) ou, cas le plus fréquent, de survivre. A l'objectif missionnaire de conversion défini par les jésuites, les Amérindiens opposent une indifférence certaine quand la méfiance ne leur suggère pas de rester à l'écart. A l'inhumanité de leur condition servile, (ils sont en effet considérés fondamentalement comme des biens meubles), les esclaves répondent par le marronnage, la révolte, l'insoumission sous toutes ses formes. Mais de la proximité, du quotidien, des échanges voulus et/ou imposés, naît un autre monde, une société différente, prémisse d'une société créole (au sens contemporain du terme) encore à venir, en gestation. Si le nombre d'esclaves affranchis stagne, voire diminue, alors même que la population servile ne cesse d'augmenter, le nombre de "mulâtres" libres croît cependant régulièrement confirmant s'il en était besoin la collusion coloniale entre liberté et métissage.

Histology and cytology have brought an essential contribution to our knowledge of these phenomena. They have told us for instance, how specialized structures of the pathogen are often involved in the adhesion and penetration into the plant, how the interface between both organisms is finely arranged at the cellular level, or what structural alterations affect the infected tissues. They have thus set the stage for the investigations of the underlying molecular mechanisms could be undertaken. Such investigations have been remarkably successful in the recent years, expanding considerably our understanding of plant-microorganism interactions in terms of biochemical changes, rapid modifications of enzymatic activities, coordinated gene activation, signal reception and transduction. Biochemistry, molecular biology and cellular physiology have taken precedence in the phytopathologist's set of methods.
