Book Public Women Public Words

Download or read book Public Women Public Words written by Dawn Keetley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final volume in the Public Women, Public Words series focuses on what has come to be called the second wave of American feminism. It traces the resurgence of feminism in the late 1960s--from Betty Friedan and the National Organization for Women to the anarchist and lesbian identity dimensions of radical feminism. Including topics such as sexual autonomy, abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the black-feminist resistance to the white-dominated second wave, this volume reflects the unprecedented range of women's issues taken up by feminists during the 1970s and beyond. Volume III also charts the great diffusion of feminism with separate sections on multicultural feminism and the feminist presence in media and pop culture. Finally, through the recent writings of feminist intellectuals, it looks toward a third feminist wave for the new millennium. Public Women, Public Words: A Documentary History of American Feminism provides a comprehensive view of the many strands of feminist thought and actions and is essential for every women's studies and feminism collection.

Download or read book Public Women Public Words written by John Pettegrew and published by Madison House Pub. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on what has come to be called the second wave of U.S. feminism. It charts the various strands of the resurgence of feminism in the late 1960s -- from the liberal feminism of Betty Friedan and the National Organization for Women to the anarchist and lesbian identity dimensions of radical feminism. Black-feminist resistance to the white-dominated second wave is looked at closely, as is the unprecedented range of practical women's issues taken up by feminists during the 1970s and beyond: for instance, sexual autonomy, equality in marriage and parenting, child care, welfare, abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the integration of women into higher education. The great diffusion of feminism in the past twenty five years is charted here with separate sections on multicultural feminism and the feminist presence in television, Hollywood, and other areas of popular culture. Finally, the prospects for a third feminist wave are considered in essays from feminist intellectuals writing in the 1990s.

Book How Women s Words Fail in the Public Arena and what They Do about it

Download or read book How Women s Words Fail in the Public Arena and what They Do about it written by Karen McLaughlin and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses certain issues women confront when they attempt to be heard in the public sphere. These issues include the limitations of public speech as traditionally defined to determine bow women influence publicly and the need of many women to mediate their public speech while maintaining conventional feminine qualities. Political participation is enacted through the medium of talk yet, more often than not, women's words fail to be heard in the public domain. While there has been progress since women were granted suffrage, public speech remains a socially transgressive act for women. Women fail to embody the masculine standard as citizens while their public outspokenness violates sexual norms by which they are commonly recognized. I use a theatrical model and speech act theory to analyze how three exceptional public women, Mary McCarthy, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Patricia Williams cope with this dilemma. The performative examples by which these women are recognized publicly derive as much from nonverbal acts as their spoken words. Consequently, I examine their public speech acts with broader criteria than just the logocentric. The theatrical model demonstrates polysemous systems which coincide with the spoken word: tone, bodily deportment, gesture, dress, scenic effects, etc. As subordinate or less privileged meaning systems, they not only occur in tandem with public discourse but often compel in lieu of public speech opportunity. Further, I introduce the concept of performative oscillation as adaptive behavior that reconciles mutually exclusive positions by demonstrating both simultaneously. I conclude that these women often sustain their public speaking authority by a performative oscillation which alternates continuously between feminine stereotypes and masculinized rhetorical address. If we understand stereotype in this case as a social mask which one assumes to negotiate public life, the public woman often assumes a public guise of subordination, a feminine masquerade to make herself recognizable. Thus, her feminine subjection paradoxically both constrains and enables her declamatory agency. This performative oscillation mitigates the public woman's exception while it suspends outright censure.
