Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Values of the Mount Hood Area: Report of a Special Committee Appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to Make a Study of the Features or Qualities of Major Public Importance of the Mount Hood Area in the Mount Hood National Forest and the Principles Which Should Govern Its Management On January 28, previous to the writing of this letter, two members of our committee (doctor Merriam and Mr. Waugh) had a conference with Secretary J ardine in his office at which time these matters were discussed at large and the Secretary's intentions made clear. Pursuant to these instructions, one member of the committee (mr. Waugh) arrived at the Portland office of the Forest Service on June 22 and immediately took up the work of assembling data for the use of the full committee. Mr. Waugh also made several field trips to familiarize himself further with actual conditions on the land. Between 1936 and 1938 and in the middle of the Great Depression, it was hand built and furnished through the Works Progress Administration. When Pres. Franklin Roosevelt came to Oregon in 1937 to dedicate the lodge, its significance as a New Deal success was confirmed. Timberline stands today as an icon of New Deal art and Cascadian architecture. Its rustic style is complemented by locally sourced and handmade wood furniture, wrought iron furnishings, and textiles. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the lodge, a living museum, is one of Oregon's most visited sites. It is managed for the public by the US Forest Service and operated as a ski area, hotel, and tourist attraction by R.L.K. and Company.
