Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Library and the Common Schools: Three Papers on Educational Topics You are all teachers in the common schools of the town of Quincy, and I very freely acknowledge that I think your course as such, especially of late, has been marked by a good deal of zeal, by a consciousness of progress, and a sincere desire to accomplish good results. I am disposed neither to find fault with you nor with our schools, as schools go. I should like, however, to ask you this simple question Did it ever, after all, occur to you, what is the great end and object of all this common school system - Why do we get all these children together, and labor over them so assiduously year after year? Now, it may well be that it never sug gested itself in that way to you, but I think it may safely be asserted that the one best possible result of a common-school edu cation, its great end and aim, should be to prepare the children of the community for the far greater work of educating themselves. Book Classroom Libraries for Public Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Classroom Libraries for Public Schools Classic Reprint written by Buffalo Public Library and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classroom Libraries for Public Schools The first purpose of this graded list is to furnish to teachers a convenient cata logue Of the books which the Public Library has to this date devoted to school use. We hope, by having such a list, to secure the aid of the teachers in the choice of each classroom library, so that the books may be suited to the age and capacity of the Children, and helpful both to teachers and pupils in connection with the course of study. The list is only tentative, and other books will be added from time to time, both from old books found to be needed and from new books published, as the wants of the schools require and the resources of the library will permit. The library will be very glad of suggestions from teachers, both as to changes in the list and the addi tion of new books. The selection of the books and the division into grades was first made on the basis of the reading from the Children's Department of the Public Library. The first selec tion and division was very carefully revised after trying the books in the classrooms of ten schools for a full year. The assignment of the books to the different grades has been changed and modified, particularly in the subjects of travel and history, to meet the requirements of the course of study. For instance, Cofiin's books on United States history have been continued into the ninth grade, although they are not above the comprehension of much younger readers, because American history is studied in this grade, and these books are found very useful and are much sought after. Librarians, superintendents of education and teachers in other cities, to whom the list may come, will find it Open to criticism, both as to books omitted, books included which perhaps should have been left out, and as to the assignment to grades. After a longer trial of the books by further use, and a larger experience by the com pilers, we will try to issue a better and fuller list with subject entries. The suggested list of reference books is also only tentative. It is added because it is a part of our plan to build up a good reference library in each school. The entire amount of the state appropriation awarded to those schools under the library care will be expended for this purpose each year, the Public Library furnishing all the books for the pupils' home reading. Book Public Libraries Their Development and Future Organization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Public Libraries Their Development and Future Organization Classic Reprint written by Library Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Libraries, Their Development and Future Organization It was a wonderful system - as a piece of elaborate mechanism but it was a system that was deliberately fashioned for the purpose of turning out certain types of mind and character. If you have read that brilliant and horrible production of the genius of Mr. Wells - The Island ofdr. Moreau - you will remember how the wonderful gifts of the great scientist were devoted to the creation of repulsive simulacra of humanity. When we see the great kultur machine of Germany working at high pressure for generations and ending with the production of scientists whose supreme achievement is the introduction of the most repulsive savagery into the conduct of war, and of philosophers whose function is to justify and even to applaud the work of their confreres, we can hardly help feeling that in this, as in other directions, Mr. Wells has shown himself to be the most successful of our prophets, and that in Dr. Moreau he has shown us the logical outcome of German methods in education. It is, to my mind, one of the greatest virtues of the library move ment as an element in national education that it is necessarily an in strument of liberty and the enemy of over-rigid systematization. Our one aim is to put freely before those whom we serve all that is best in the world's literature. The student may perhaps be too narrowly, too specially trained in his academic routine. We supply the best of anti dotes when we invite him to wander among our bookshelves and to decide for himself what he will read! We are entitled to believe that it is in our power to play an impor tant part in strengthening those two elements in our intellectual training - freedom and morality - which will preserve us from the dangers into which the mind of Germany has been led by its drilled and regimented professors. There was a feeling in the early days of the war that we could afford to close down such things as public libraries and art galleries. That feeling is vanishing, and there is evidence ofa distinct change of attitude in the public mind. We are beginning to realize the short-sightedness Of such a policy, and so far from closing down the libraries, we find people beginning to consider in what ways these and similar institutions can be made to serve more effectively both the intellectual and practical needs of the community. Book Library Books for High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Library Books for High Schools Classic Reprint written by Martha Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library Books for High Schools This list is based on the Minnesota school library list, Books for High Schools, 1913 - 14. The number of titles has been materially increased to include the suggestions of many high-school teachers, specialists in the Bureau of Education, high-school librarians, public librarians, and commission workers. The suggestions and demands of teachers of special departments for comprehensive lists on particular subjects have been somewhat insistent, and the result is that some divisions, notably agriculture, are out of proportion to the rest of the list. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library and Society: Reprints of Papers and Addresses It may be desirable to repeat here the warning that the word classics in the title of this series is to be understood as meaning early and standard expressions of ideas that have later developed into prominence. The papers and addresses in this volume have been chosen especially with this in view, and as they emphasize social relations an effort has been made to include expressions from men of eminence whose names would not probably occur 'to the student of library economy as having ex pressed an opinion about the work of libraries or as having influenced it in any permanent way. I desire to acknowledge the kindly assistance ren dered in the selection and grouping of the articles by Mrs. Gertrude Gilbert Drury, chief instructor in the St. Louis Library School. It has been most valuable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
