Book excerpt: Black public intellectuals, from liberal to conservative, are all talking about how black America is degenerating culturally. But there is little concrete evidence for this conclusion. In most areas of life, black Americans have made significant positive progress since the Civil Rights era. Blacks are still economically worse off than whites, but black poverty has declined and the black middle class has grown since the 1960s. More blacks graduate from college today than ever before. Black communities are much safer now than during the peak crack epidemic years of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The blackteenage pregnancy rate has fallen dramatically since the 1960s. All of these facts contradict the assertions of black cultural decline. While negative images of blacks abound in American popular culture, there is no evidence that these images accurately represent most real black Americans. In Getting It Wrong, sociologist Algernon Austin carefully examines the data on black Americans and separates myth from fact.

Defining Student Success shows how different schools foster dissimilar and sometimes conflicting ideas about what it takes to succeed—ideas that do more to preserve the status quo than to promote upward mobility. Five trade myths are exploded: 1. imports kill jobs; 2. exchange rates drive trade; 3. trade balances are a purely national matter; 4. These commonly-held concepts of trade balances are based on 15th-century accounting techniques, which vote-hungry, sophistic politicians have latched on to. The result has been two senseless world wars. Working closely with Americas Bureau of Economic Analysis, this book transports trade balance accounting into the 21st century by introducing global trade balances. These are meant to replace those dangerously popular national trade balances based on 15th century Italian Renaissance accounting techniques. Such anachronistic national trade balances lead to protectionism, while global trade balances lead to ever-more open trade borders. This book is relevant for three reasons. First, trade balances are moved in to the 21st century, giving the reader a truly globalized view of trade flows. Secondly, this book is designed to contribute to anti-protectionist rhetoric: global trade balances call for more, not for less inter-national trade. Thirdly, this book provides ammunition against host country protectionism: irked by protectionist trade rhetoric, host countries increasingly are injuring foreign multinationals operating in their country. A glance at recent news emanating from China illustrates this insidious development.

Book excerpt: For the past 40 years, American college and university administrators have registered record low retention and high attrition rates. Education experts and researchers have claimed the problems are embarrassing to the United States’ higher education institutions. Based on the problems, graduate school administrators are unable to graduate doctoral students at U.S. population growth rates. Currently, only 1% of Americans hold PhD degrees. Compared to other industrialized countries such as Japan, China, and Mexico, the rate is insignificant. The purpose of the mixed methods case study was to investigate if there was a relationship between motivation and retention rates at the doctoral level. The goal of the study was to determine if extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors and constraints were associated with persistence in a graduate doctoral program. Data were collected from 193 doctoral and graduate students for the quantitative study, while 20 doctoral and graduate students participated in a qualitative study followed by a thorough semi-structured interview. Inductive and deductive analyses were performed, transcribed, and opened, while axial coding provided emergent themes and sub-themes. The research showed a direct relationship between financial implications, attrition and retention rates, and motivation in doctoral level students. Many doctoral students believed the primary reason they were unable to pursue doctoral programs was based on financial hardship. Doctoral students who responded to the survey added that motivation was the second significant variable that helped them continue their studies.
