Book excerpt: This third edition is completely revised and expanded and incorporates all the latest taxonomy and research. Herpetology is a rapidly evolving field and studies on reptiles and amphibians have taken the lead in new discoveries in many conceptual areas of biology. The authors build on this progress by updating all the chapters with new literature, graphics, and discussions, many of which have changed our thinking in these areas. Most important are the remarkable advances in behavioral, physiological, and phylogeographical data. Many of the original photographs have been replaced and all are now in color. Of course, apart from the intrinsic interest of reptiles and amphibians, much research is fuelled by the calamitous conservation situation of many species around the world, in all kinds of habitats. The discussion of conservation-related topics is much enlarged and the authors continue and broaden the global coverage of earlier editions, recognizing the burgeoning reptile and amphibian research programs and the plight of many species in all countries and all biomes.

Download or read book The Herpetology of Cuba Classic Reprint written by Thomas Barbour and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Herpetology of Cuba No previous attempt has been made to produce a complete list of the amphibians and reptiles of Cuba with descriptions of the species. It should be expressly understood that the senior author is responsible for the actual writ ing of this paper, for the nomenclature, and taxonomic descriptions, and the junior author has contributed many details of distribution and notes upon habits and habitats; his work has been chiefly in the Guantanamo Basin; and of this region he has the intimate knowledge which only long residence can give. The senior author besides having been privileged to collect with his associate upon Monte Libano, and elsewhere about Guantanamo, has visited various chosen localities in all of the other provinces, usually several times. Thus one or other of the writers has himself collected, with a few exceptions, every defi nitely known Cuban reptile Or amphibian. In 1880 Gundlach published his classic Erpetologia Cubana in Havana and in the natural course of events many changes have taken place since that time which have affected the nomenclature and status of the species treated, while new forms have been discovered.
