Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychosis in Childhood and Adolescence offers an in-depth examination of the nature of psychosis, its risk factors and its manifestations in children and adolescents who experience a continuum of emotional disorders. The chapters present a hopeful, research-based framework for treatment. They emphasize combined treatment that is based on psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral psychotherapy principles, pharmacological interventions and supportive family approaches that reflect the vulnerabilities and resources of the individual child. This text highlights the importance of thorough assessment and the need for long-term treatment that facilitates the psychotic child’s healthy maturation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments around the world have given priority to "early intervention", i.e. the early diagnosis and treatment of young adults with psychotic symptoms. One of the main problems with this approach, is that only a small proportion of these young adults can be expected to go on to develop schizophrenia, yet all the treatment regimes are derived from work with adults who have had full psychotic episodes. Why Does Schizophrenia Develop at Late Adolescence? proposes a controversial new model of how schizophrenia develops in late adolescence and presents clinical material aimed at influencing the way psychosis is treated, building on a state-of-the-art reassessment of the field. A major reconceptualisation of how schizophrenia develops A controversial approach Early intervention programmes are now extremely widespread, so there is much interest in the area and how best to treat this serious psychotic disorder

Download or read book Childhood and Adolescent Psychosis written by Dieter Bürgin and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this volume, the latest understandings are reviewed by specialists in child and adolescent psychiatry. It discusses questions such as why schizophrenic psychosis has to be differentiated from borderline personality disorders; why the problem-solving strategy in early detection of neurocognitive disorders and neuropsychiatric behavioural disorders is also relevant for the development of a clinical view of the psychotic process. Further contributions point out the choice of specific individual psychotherapeutic techniques as well as why childhood psychosis needs a full inclusion of the family in the diagnostic and therapeutic process. This publication gives a stimulating overview of the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of psychotic disturbances in adolescence. Child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatrists as well as paediatricians will find it inspiring reading.

Download or read book Adolescent Schizophrenia written by James T. Nillinghouse and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that impacts a broad range of a person's social and developmental functioning. Until the recent past, most of the research done on schizophrenia did not include children or adolescents who suffer from the disorder. During adolescence, important changes take place in brain development. These changes make adolescence a period of both vulnerability and opportunity. Emergence of psychosis and schizophrenia may be associated with abnormal brain development during adolescence. This book discusses the findings of studies that focus on abnormal brain development during the premorbid period of psychosis and schizophrenia. Cognitive neuroscience constructs of visuospatial memory and working memory are associated with adult- and adolescent-onset schizophrenia. This book reviews the existing literature on the topic and explores the nature of and association between visuospatial memory in adolescent onset schizophrenia. The prevalence of psychotic symptoms in the general population, particularly in children and adolescents, is also explored. The significance of psychotic symptoms in relation to psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and its relation to social factors, such as childhood abuse is examined. To deal with schizophrenic young patients in a hospital, psychoanalytical psychotherapeutic "teamwork" is reviewed. The transference relation between patient and therapist, and what it entails, is also discussed.
