Book The Science and Practice of Lithium Therapy

Download or read book The Science and Practice of Lithium Therapy written by Gin S. Malhi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear and comprehensive guide to the clinical prescription of lithium that draws upon evidence-based knowledge of its mechanisms of action. The book is divided into two parts, on the science of lithium and the practice of lithium therapy. The former covers aspects such as the properties of the lithium ion, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, impact on neurotransmission, and gene expression modulation. The section on practice includes discussion of variability in response to lithium, use of lithium in the treatment of bipolar disorders, its value in suicide prevention, administration during pregnancy and in the pediatric age group, and side effects. Lithium is arguably the only true mood stabilizer, and its multifaceted effects across many clinical domains have given rise to a resurgence of interest in recent years, fuelled by both researchers and clinicians. Nevertheless, its use remains constrained by exaggerated concerns about potential side-effects. In reality, lithium is a simple molecule that is relatively straightforward to administer and monitor and has potentially profound benefits at a fraction of the cost of contemporary agents. This book dispels the many myths and concerns that surround its use and will be of interest for clinicians and researchers worldwide, and those that are recipients of lithium therapy.

Book Nutritional Lithium a Cinderella Story

Download or read book Nutritional Lithium a Cinderella Story written by James Greenblatt and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a nation plagued with chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, a different predator is the single greatest reason for disability in the United States: mental disorders. Our fast-paced and frenetic lifestyle, coupled with a grossly polluted environment, has created the perfect breeding ground for mental instability. With the spread of brain disorders on the rise around the world, nutritional biochemistry and one of its stars, lithium, has stepped into the spotlight to offer proven methods to heal our bodies from the inside out. Historically linked to severe psychiatric illness, lithium as an agent of good health and well-being is often ignored and brushed aside. Known as the Cinderella drug, it is an essential mineral in our physical and psychological makeup. Lack of its presence in the body can result in poor brain development, psychiatric symptoms, and so on. When administered in small, controlled doses, lithium can significantly improve the lives of those suffering from mental disorders. Nutritional Lithium: A Cinderella Story illustrates the significance of this precious mineral not only as a nutrient vital to human development, but also as a nutritional component that can help millions of people worldwide.

Book Clinical Manual of Psychopharmacology in the Medically Ill

Download or read book Clinical Manual of Psychopharmacology in the Medically Ill written by James L. Levenson and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of Clinical Manual of Psychopharmacology in the Medically Ill continues the legacy and builds on the success of the first edition by offering a thoroughly up-to-date, comprehensive, and practical guide to the prescription of psychotropic medications in patients with medical illness. The book addresses the prevalence of psychiatric illness in patients with serious medical illness, the complications that may arise, and the implications for psychopharmacological treatment. There is increasing recognition that patients with medical and psychiatric comorbidity have more functional impairment, disability days, emergency department use, rehospitalization, and other medical care costs than do those without such comorbidity. As a result, health care systems have been incentivized to develop new and innovative models of population-based care that integrate medical and psychiatric care in an effort to increase quality and prevention while decreasing use of expensive services such as emergency department visits and hospitalizations. The book is a valuable guide for clinicians across a range of specialties operating in this new, more demanding health care environment. The manual addresses critically important topics through the use of a variety of user-friendly features: Psychiatric drugs that have become available since the first edition, as well as all recent relevant randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, are covered thoroughly. Each chapter addresses key differential diagnostic considerations and adverse neuropsychiatric side effects of disease-specific medications. Disease-specific pharmacokinetic principles in drug prescribing, including interactions between psychotropic drugs and disease-specific drugs, are also addressed. Key summary points pertaining to psychotropic prescribing in the specific medical disease(s) or specialty area covered are included at the end of each chapter, and a multitude of useful tables summarizing the most important information are provided as well. Chapters are heavily referenced with source information should readers wish to expand their knowledge in a specific area. The chapter authors were selected for their expertise in each area, then the text was edited for consistency, clarity, and maximum utility. Clinical Manual of Psychopharmacology in the Medically Ill is a rigorous and illuminating guide to this vital topic, and clinicians from a variety of specialties will find it indispensable.

Book Finding Sanity

Download or read book Finding Sanity written by Greg de Moore and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of the ground breaking Australian doctor who discovered the first pharmacological treatment for mental illness. For most of human history, mental illness has been largely untreatable. Sufferers lived their lives - if they survived - in and out of asylums, accumulating life's wreckage around them. In 1948, all that changed when an Australian doctor and recently returned prisoner of war, working alone in a disused kitchen, set about an experimental treatment for one of the scourges of mankind - manic depression, or bipolar disorder. That doctor was John Cade and in that small kitchen he stirred up a miracle. John Cade discovered a treatment that has become the gold standard for bipolar disorder - lithium. It has stopped more people from committing suicide than a thousand help lines. Lithium is the penicillin story of mental health - the first effective medication discovered for the treatment of a mental illness - and it is, without doubt, Australia's greatest mental health story.

Book History of the Introduction of Lithium Into Medicine and Psychiatry

Download or read book History of the Introduction of Lithium Into Medicine and Psychiatry written by Johan Schioldann and published by . This book was released on 2009-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of lithium therapy back to the 1800s. It contests the notion that the Australian man John Cade, who pioneered lithium therapy in Australia in the 1940s, was the first man to use the therapy. Tracing the history of lithium therapy, and evaluating Cade's research and potential breadth of reading and resources, the author comes to the conclusion that Cade was aware of previous writings on the topic but never acknowledged it. Cade has therefore become known as the 'pioneer' of this therapy, incorrectly.

Download or read book Handbook of Lithium Therapy written by F.N. Johnson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a medical student in the 1930s, I remember well that a very clear line of distinction was drawn between physical illness and mental illness. Physical illness resulted from pathology which could be identified and studied in detail and the cause could often be deduced. Treatment thus was often specific and based upon a proper appreciation of underlying basic science. Mental illness, on the other hand, could not, it was believed, be based upon identifiable changes in basic science. It was literally 'all in the mind' and, occurring in the absence of causes that could be identified, analysed and remedied, had no treatment that could in any way be called specific. N ow it is all too easy, in Medicine, for a doctor to become so immersed in a specialty that he fails to notice how his colleagues in other specialties are faring and, through laziness, to miss advances even of fundamental importance in fields other than those in which he himself works. As a consultant surgeon, after W orId War II, although I realized the importance of keeping in touch with those medical specialties which appeared to have a common interface with my own surgical interests, such as general medi cine, gastro-enterology, hepatology and endocrinology, it did not occur to me that there was any pressing need to ask what was new in Psychological Medicine.

Download or read book Shrinks written by Jeffrey A. Lieberman and published by Little, Brown Spark. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the PBS series Mysterious of Mental Illness, Shrinks brilliantly tells the "astonishing" story of psychiatry's origins, demise, and redemption (Siddhartha Mukherjee). Psychiatry has come a long way since the days of chaining "lunatics" in cold cells and parading them as freakish marvels before a gaping public. But, as Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, the former president of the American Psychiatric Association, reveals in his extraordinary and eye-opening book, the path to legitimacy for "the black sheep of medicine" has been anything but smooth. In Shrinks, Dr. Lieberman traces the field from its birth as a mystic pseudo-science through its adolescence as a cult of "shrinks" to its late blooming maturity — beginning after World War II — as a science-driven profession that saves lives. With fascinating case studies and portraits of the luminaries of the field — from Sigmund Freud to Eric Kandel — Shrinks is a gripping and illuminating read, and an urgent call-to-arms to dispel the stigma of mental illnesses by treating them as diseases rather than unfortunate states of mind. “A lucid popular history...At once skeptical and triumphalist. It shows just how far psychiatry has come.” —Julia M. Klein, Boston Globe

Book Bipolar Not So Much Understanding Your Mood Swings and Depression

Download or read book Bipolar Not So Much Understanding Your Mood Swings and Depression written by Chris Aiken and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching depression as a complex disorder with many different facets rather than all-or-nothing. Now available in paperback with an updated preface. Depression confuses the mind, strips away hope, and causes people to blame themselves for an illness they never asked for. This book presents a revolutionary new understanding of the concept of depression and offers readers skills and strategies to manage it. No longer is this a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, and antidepressants are no longer the one-size-fits-all treatment. Mood disorders are now seen to form a spectrum of problems, from common depression on one end to full bipolar disorder on the other. In between these extremes are multitudes of people who are on the middle of the mood spectrum, and this book is for them. The first part of the book helps readers answer the question, “Where am I on the mood spectrum?” By laying the foundation for understanding this spectrum, Aiken and Phelps highlight the key distinctions that define unipolarity, bipolarity, hypomania, mania, and depression. Readers will be able to discern which definition best fits their experience, and use this understanding to learn which treatment methods will work best. The authors also empower readers to look beyond antidepressants. They walk readers through new medications for the mood spectrum, and offer a guide to non-medication treatments that anyone can use on their own, from diet and lifestyle changes to natural supplements. The book also discusses other innovative technologies that can aid in recovery, including dawn simulators, mood apps, and blue-light filters. This thoughtful and beneficial book will offer readers skills and strategies, as well as hope, in the face of debilitating mental challenges.
