Book Aristotle on Earlier Greek Psychology

Download or read book Aristotle on Earlier Greek Psychology written by Jason W. Carter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first in English to provide a full, systematic investigation into Aristotle's criticisms of earlier Greek theories of the soul from the perspective of his theory of scientific explanation. Some interpreters of the De Anima have seen Aristotle's criticisms of Presocratic, Platonic, and other views about the soul as unfair or dialectical, but Jason W. Carter argues that Aristotle's criticisms are in fact a justified attempt to test the adequacy of earlier theories in terms of the theory of scientific knowledge he advances in the Posterior Analytics. Carter proposes a new interpretation of Aristotle's confrontations with earlier psychology, showing how his reception of other Greek philosophers shaped his own hylomorphic psychology and led him to adopt a novel dualist theory of the soul–body relation. His book will be important for students and scholars of Aristotle, ancient Greek psychology, and the history of the mind–body problem.

Book A Psychology with a Soul

Download or read book A Psychology with a Soul written by Jean Hardy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive approach to self-realization, psychosynthesis was developed between 1910 and the 1950s by the Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli. Assagioli like Jung, diverged from Freud in order to develop an understanding of human nature that took account of spiritual dimensions. This book, originally published in 1987, is an exploration of psychosynthesis and the depth of mystical and scientific ideas behind it. It will be of great value to all those interested in personal integration and spiritual growth in general, and psychosynthesis in particular. Focusing on psychosynthesis as transpersonal psychology, Jean Hardy describes how the ideas behind psychosynthesis spring both from scientific study of the unconscious and from the long mystical tradition of both the Easter and Western world. She shows how the roots of a modern spiritual, or transpersonal, psychology lie in a split tradition within the Western world – while psychology aspires to be scientific, religion or mystical knowledge is currently studied within the discipline of theology. The two have up till now been very little related, and the special achievement of psychosynthesis as a therapy is that it relates the soul and theology to the personality and psychology, and perceives personal and developmental patterns as a microcosm of larger social and historical patterns.

Book Soul Psychology

Download or read book Soul Psychology written by Joshua David Stone, Ph.D. and published by Wellspring/Ballantine. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words of Sai Baba, "God equals man minus ego," are echoed by Dr. Joshua David Stone in his seminal work, Soul Psychology. A veteran transpersonal psychologist and family counselor, Dr. Stone teaches us how our entire understanding of ourselves and others is completely changed when we integrate our soul into the way we live our lives. Based on eighteen years of Dr. Stone's practice, this book is not a psychological approach to spirituality. It is rather a spiritual approach to the psychology of everyday living. At the heart of Soul Psychology is emotional healing through the dismantling of the "negative ego," a psychological cancer that prevents us from acting in accordance with our soul's true nature and purpose. This negative energy drives us to find our security outside of ourselves; whereas the only true security is one that is grounded in having a right relationship with self and a right relationship with the Divine. To guide us onto this path of spiritual ascension, Soul Psychology offers a stimulating new viewpoint that expands the boundaries of traditional spiritual practice, providing a wealth of accessible and powerful meditations and exercises, including - The six-step process for healing and spiritualizing emotions - The spiritual science of the seven rays and the twenty-two chakras - Methods for clearing negative psychic energies that inhibit soul growth - The one hundred most common pitfalls and traps on the spiritual path

Book Psychology and the Soul

Download or read book Psychology and the Soul written by Otto Rank and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his last years, Otto Rank turned his lifetime of thought and learning toward two of the most difficult topics in human history: religion and the soul. The result was this now-classic work, available in this new, very accessible English translation. Unlike many other intellectuals of the twentieth century, Rank maintains a place for the soul rather than dismissing it as a fantasy. The soul and the beliefs about it, he argues, set forth the foundation for psychology, with its complex analyses of consciousness, self-consciousness, and personality. Rank's commentary is not limited to beliefs about individual souls but includes ideas about group souls, sometimes encompassing nations or generations. Rank suggests that it is in expression of group beliefs that the idea of the soul attains its greatest power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the Psychological Soul of Spirituality is a comprehensive exploration of spiritual constructs based on an empirical, evidence-based paradigm for understanding and addressing spirituality. In a field where there is no current consensus on spirituality, this book provides a much-needed psychologically based definition and ontology that assists helping professionals in formulating their professional identities; developing effective and appropriate training models; furthering their understanding of what spirituality is and is not, from a psychological perspective; and more effectively addressing spiritual issues to support clients. The authors provide a review of current issues in the area of spirituality, also called the numinous, and provide perspectives that address these concerns in ways that promote a fully scientific understanding of the construct. Ultimately the book provides a concise definition of the numinous that places it squarely in the social sciences. Chapters outline the clear value of the numinous for psychology and detail its relevance for professionals’ training.

Book Psychology Or a View of the Human Soul

Download or read book Psychology Or a View of the Human Soul written by Frederick August Rauch and published by . This book was released on 1840 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The principal object of the author in writing this book, was to render this noble and delightful science accessible to all classes of readers. A second object of the author was to give the science of man a direct bearing upon other sciences, and especially upon religion and theology. Psychology and theology are connected by their common subject, which is man. The present work is, as far as the author knows, the first attempt to unite German and American mental philosophy. This design has not been executed by bringing together two separate systems or by forming an eclectic compound, which is neither the one nor the other, and the parts of which do not grow forth from one spirit, but are brought together from different sources and united by the writer--a real sphinx in the sphere of science"--Preface. In contrast, the Sufi goal is ultimately spiritual: Yes, we need to transform our negativity and be effective in the world; but beyond that, we need to reach a state of harmony with the Divine. Full of stories, poetry, meditations, journaling exercises, and colorful everyday examples, this book will open the heart, nourish the self, and quicken the soul.

Book Aristotle s On the Soul

Book excerpt: In this timeless and profound inquiry, Aristotle presents a view of the psyche that avoids the simplifications both of the materialists and those who believe in the soul as something quite distinct from body. On the Soul also includes Aristotle's idiosyncratic and influential account of light and colors. On Memory and Recollection continues the investigation of some of the topics introduced in On the Soul. Sachs's fresh and jargon-free approach to the translation of Aristotle, his lively and insightful introduction, and his notes and glossaries, all bring out the continuing relevance of Aristotle's thought to biological and philosophical questions.

Book Yearnings of the Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Garb
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-11-23
  • ISBN : 022629580X
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Yearnings of the Soul written by Jonathan Garb and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Garb's "Yearnings of the Soul: Psychological Thought in Modern Kabbalah" is an original, path-breaking study of the renderings of the "heart and soul" in the works of major, minor, and obscure but important figures of modern Kabbalah. Garb has unearthed a treasure-trove of neglected figures and texts, bringing into dialogue their views on heart and soul with those found in other religious and secular authorities. There is no other study that comes close to the territory Garb covers or, for that matter, provides the historical and cultural context necessary for understanding the rise of such psychological renderings in the works of the modern Kabbalists. His analysis shows that any attempt to essentialize the multiple and varied understandings of heart and soul in Jewish mysticism is mistaken. Analyzing text and figure in context on a case-by-case basis Garb is able to provide comparison without being reductive. This is an invaluable contribution to the discipline that cements Garb as the leading scholar of modern Kabbalah.

Book excerpt: While not all aspects of Carl Gustav Jung's work have aged well, many of his ideas remain consistent with current concepts in behavioral psychology and neuroscience. It combines the mystical insights developed by Eastern Orthodox Christian theology with Jung's vision of the psyche and the concept of the collective unconscious and its archetypes. Though written as a contribution to the field of psychology and as a tool for clinical practice, it is also accessible to lay readers interested in the relationship between the mind and the brain....

Book Foundations for Soul Care

Download or read book Foundations for Soul Care written by Eric L. Johnson and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-09-20 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work of first-order scholarship, Eric Johnson makes a vitally important contribution to the field of Christian counseling. He first presents a detailed overview and appreciative but critical evaluation of the reigning paradigms in the field of Christian counseling, particularly biblical counseling and integration. Building on their respective strengths, he seeks to move beyond the current impasse in the field and develop a more unified and robustly Christian understanding. Drawing upon the Bible and various Christian intellectual and soul care traditions, and through a Christian reinterpretation of relevant modern psychological theory and research, Johnson proceeds to offer a new framework for the care of souls that is comprehensive in scope, yet flows from a Christian understanding of human beings--what amounts to a distinctly Christian version of psychology. This book is a must-read for any serious Christian teacher, student, or practitioner in the fields of psychology or counseling.
