Book excerpt: With its increasingly secular and religiously diverse population Australia faces many challenges in determining how the state and religion should interact. Australia is not unique in facing these challenges. States worldwide, including common law countries with shared legal and religious heritages, have also been faced with the question of how the state and religion should relate to one another. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and the United States have all had to grapple with how to manage the state-religion relationship in the present day. This book provides a comprehensive historical review of the interaction of the state and religion in Australia. It brings together multiple examples of areas in which the state and religion interact, and reviews these examples across Australia’s history from settlement through to present day. The book sets this story within a wider theoretical context via an examination of theories of state-religion relationships as well as a comparison with other similar common law jurisdictions. The book demonstrates how the solutions arrived at in Australia is uniquely Australian owing to Australia’s unique legal system, religious demographics and history. However this is just one possible outcome among many that have been tried in common law liberal democracies.

Book Disputes and Dilemmas in Health Law

Download or read book Disputes and Dilemmas in Health Law written by Ian R. Freckelton and published by Federation Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book replaces the successful Controversies in Health Law. Under the same editorship and much the same authorship, it is substantially larger (30 chapters instead of 18) and correspondingly more comprehensive. It retains the lively analysis and the focus on controversial and cutting-edge problems. The chapters are broken up into parts covering Litigation and Liabilty; Reproductive Technologies; The Sequelae of the End of Life; Public Health; Ethical Frameworks and Dilemmas; Regulation; Human Rights and Therapeutic Jurisprudence; Research and Vulnerability and Information, Privacy and Confidentiality . They consider issues raised by new technologies, changing legislation and altering community expectations; by new regulatory processes for medicine and all of the health professions; by the fundamental changes to civil liability for medical negligence; by the fierce debate over the role of coroners. Disputes and Dilemmas in Health Law covers questions on property in human tissue and on the ethical and legal aspects of the genetics revolution; provides a modern take on "old" issues such as reproductive law; takes account of changes relating to expert evidence; and discusses how difficult cases in relation to psychiatric injury and wrongful life are pushing compensability to its edges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While acknowledging their major debt to Europeans like Freud, Piaget, Erickson, Lewin, and Jung, American psychologists generally concentrated on developments in American psychology. And this tendency prevails in spite of the fact that innovations?in sport psychology and clinical neuropsychology, for example?have continued to come from abroad. International Psychology is a much-needed exposition of the state of psychology in forty-five countries, including the Soviet Union and the United States. Emphasizing the period from 1960 to the present, and surveying the training, research, and practice of psychologists on six continents, this volume introduces a widely dispersed network of occupational kinfolk, many of whom have scant knowledge of one another. The editors provide a panoramic view in the opening chapter, as well as an epilogue and name and subject indexes. The contributors, nearly all distinguished psychologists in their countries, represent Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, the German Democratic Republic, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, and Zimbabwe.

Download or read book William James MD written by Emma K. Sutton and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "William James is known as a nineteenth-century philosopher, psychologist, and psychical researcher. Less well-known are the medical fixations that united his multiple identities and drove his ambition to change the way American society conceived of itself in body, mind, and soul. William James, M.D. offers an account of the development and cultural significance of James's ideas and works, and establishes, for the first time, the relevance of medical themes to his major lines of thought. James lived at a time when old assumptions about faith and the moral and religious possibilities for human worth and redemption were increasingly displaced by a concern with the medically "normal" and the perfectibility of the body. Woven into treatises warning of the degeneration of humanity, these ideas comprised the origins of the eugenics movement and were manifest in a growing social stigma attached to illness and invalidism, a disturbing intellectual current in which James felt personally implicated. Most chronicles of James's life have portrayed a distressed young man, a psychological or spiritual crisis, followed by the emergence of a mature thinker who threw off his pallor of mental sickness for good. In contrast, Emma Sutton draws on his personal correspondence, unpublished notebooks, and diaries to show that James considered himself a genuine invalid to the end of his days. Sutton makes the compelling case that his philosophizing was not an abstract occupation but an impassioned response to his own life experiences and challenges. To ignore the medical James is to misread James altogether. Sales points: First book to map William James's preoccupation with medical ideas, concerns, and values across the disciplinary breadth of his work Reveals how themes of invalidism, health, and healing underpinned the genesis of many of James's major philosophical, psychological, and political ideas Draws on the approximately 9,400 items of Jamesian correspondence, together with his private notes and reading lists"--
