Book The Philosophy of Improvisation

Download or read book The Philosophy of Improvisation written by Gary Peters and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvisation is usually either lionized as an ecstatic experience of being in the moment or disparaged as the thoughtless recycling of clichés. Eschewing both of these orthodoxies, The Philosophy of Improvisation ranges across the arts—from music to theater, dance to comedy—and considers the improvised dimension of philosophy itself in order to elaborate an innovative concept of improvisation. Gary Peters turns to many of the major thinkers within continental philosophy—including Heidegger, Nietzsche, Adorno, Kant, Benjamin, and Deleuze—offering readings of their reflections on improvisation and exploring improvisational elements within their thinking. Peters’s wry, humorous style offers an antidote to the frequently overheated celebration of freedom and community that characterizes most writing on the subject. Expanding the field of what counts as improvisation, The Philosophy of Improvisation will be welcomed by anyone striving to comprehend the creative process.

Book Timothy Leary The Harvard Years

Download or read book Timothy Leary The Harvard Years written by James Penner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of Leary’s writings devoted entirely to the research phase of his career, 1960 to 1965 • Presents Leary’s early scientific articles and scholarly essays, including those on the Harvard Psilocybin Project, the Concord Prison Project, and the Good Friday Experiment • With an editor’s introduction that examines the Harvard Drug Scandal in detail as well as a critical preface for each essay On May 27, 1963, Dr. Timothy Leary and Dr. Richard Alpert were dismissed from Harvard University’s Psychology Department--a watershed event marking the moment when psychedelic drugs were publicly demonized and driven underground. Today, little is known about the period in the early 1960s when LSD and psilocybin were not only legal but also actively researched at universities. Presenting the first collection of Leary’s writings devoted entirely to the research phase of his career, 1960 to 1965, this book offers rare articles from Leary’s time as a professor in Harvard’s Psychology Department, including writings from the Harvard Psilocybin Project, the Concord Prison Project, and the Good Friday Experiment. These essays--coauthored with Richard Alpert, Huston Smith, Ralph Metzner, and other psychedelic research visionaries--explore the nature of creativity and the therapeutic, spiritual, and religious aspects of psilocybin and LSD. Featuring Leary’s scientific articles and a rare account of his therapeutic approach, “On Existential Transaction Theory,” the book also includes Leary’s final essay from his time at Harvard, “The Politics of Consciousness,” as well as controversial articles published shortly after his dismissal. With an editor’s introduction examining the Harvard Drug Scandal and a critical preface to each essay, this book of seminal early writings by Leary--appearing in unabridged form--shows why he quickly became an articulate spokesperson for consciousness expansion and an iconic figure for the generation that came of age in the 1960s.

Book The Spiritual Meaning of the Sixties

Download or read book The Spiritual Meaning of the Sixties written by Tobias Churton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unveils the spiritual meaning that fueled the artistic, political, and social revolutions of the 1960s • Investigates the spiritual principles that informed everything from the civil rights and anti-war movements, to the hippies’ rejection of materialist culture, to the rise of feminism, gay rights, and environmentalism • Reveals how medieval troubadours, Gnosticism, Renaissance hermetic magic, and the occult doctrines of Aleister Crowley helped shape the psychedelic Sixties • Offers in-depth analysis of many of the era’s most famous books, films, and music No decade in modern history has generated more controversy and divisiveness than the tumultuous 1960s. For some, the ‘60s were an era of free love, drugs, and social revolution. For others, the Sixties were an ungodly rejection of all that was good and holy. Embarking on a profound search for the spiritual meaning behind the massive social upheavals of the 1960s, Tobias Churton turns a kaleidoscopic lens on religious and esoteric history, industry, science, philosophy, art, and social revolution to identify the meaning behind all these diverse movements. Engaging with views of mainstream historians, some of whom write off this pivotal decade as heralding an overall decline in moral values and respect for tradition, Churton examines the intricate network of spiritual forces at play in the era. He reveals spiritual principles that united the free love movement, the civil rights and anti-war movements, the hippies’ rejection of materialist culture, and the eventual rise of feminism, gay rights, and environmentalism. He traces influences from medieval troubadours, Gnosticism, Hindu philosophy, Renaissance hermetic magic, and the occult doctrines of Aleister Crowley. He also examines the psychedelic revolution, the genesis of popular interest in UFOs, and the psychological consequences of the Bomb and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King. In addition, Churton investigates the huge shifts in consciousness reflected in the movies, music, art, and literature of the era--from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles, from I Love Lucy to Star Trek, from John Wayne to Midnight Cowboy--much of which still resonates with the youth of today. Taking the reader on a long strange trip from crew-cuts and Bermuda shorts to Hair and Woodstock, from liquor to psychedelics, from uncool to cool, and from matter to Soul, Churton shows how the spiritual values of the Sixties are now reemerging, with an astonishing influx of spiritual light, to once again awaken us.

Book THE RECIPE OF THE CROCODILE

Download or read book THE RECIPE OF THE CROCODILE written by Steffen Pichler and published by ZEIS. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 250 million years, the "crocodile" in the sense of a form of life occupied the top of the food pyramid between water and land. However, this included many different species, most of which were not linearly descended from each other despite enormous similarity. Often, they were even only very distantly related in the huge family tree of reptiles. Now Steffen Pichler shows that this pronounced convergence must be grounded above all in a recurrent selective orientation towards one specific goal: namely, the broadest possible "ecological harmony". Based on years of observations of free saltwater crocodiles in northern Australia and the evaluation of palaeontological studies, he proves that this manifested seamlessly in every aspect of physique and behaviour. The heavy body can glide almost turbulence-free on mirror-smooth water surfaces. The all-day existence is so extremely unobtrusive and quiet that disturbances caused to other creatures are close to zero. The killing of prey is done in an utmost surprising way and mostly within seconds. In addition, there are many positive effects, such as those as "health police" through the automatic selection of diseased fish or even that of an indirect "protector" of the well-rehearsed ecosystem against disruptive intruders. The author explains that with real observation and a little "thinking around the corner", the ecological harmony of the crocodile becomes as obvious that there can be no stable counterarguments and that even the best engineer could not find any potential for an optimization. However, in the public alienated from nature, artificial factors like focused slow-motion films of the mostly tiny moments of killing prey form the dominant impression. This and some other distracting influences make not only the layman miss a chance to use the crocodile for very deep insights. Pichler shows how the reflection of the crocodile form reveals a whole structure of most fundamental natural laws, which were literally missed by the civilising sciences, although their exploration would have been of highest importance for mankind. And he takes the logical conclusion so far that it eventually even reaches beyond the boundaries of space and time.
