Book Stress

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dirk Hellhammer
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 3805582951
  • Pages : 117 pages

Download or read book Stress written by Dirk Hellhammer and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of stress-related disorders are major challenges across medical disciplines. Reasons include a missing covariance between the psychological and physiological stress response and a tremendous intra-individual complexity of disease-related factors, resulting in a broad inter-individual heterogeneity of pathogenetic mechanisms. This book introduces 'Neuropattern', a new concept that attempts to assess the activity of neuroendocrine interfaces participating in the communication between the brain and the body during stress. This approach allows close examination of the causal mechanisms behind stress-related disturbances and diseases, thus enabling individualized preventive and therapeutic interventions. This publication provides clinicians, researchers and students from the fields of psychiatry, psychology, neurobiology and psychoendocrinology with an excellent overview of how knowledge from basic psychobiological research can be translated for the benefit of their patients.

Book The Amygdala

Download or read book The Amygdala written by John P. Aggleton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ' I have no hesitation in recommending this book highly for anyone working in the fields of emotion, learning, and memory, social neuroscience, and the contribution of the amygdala to human and non-human animal behaviour.' Quarterly Journal of Experiemntal PsychologyThe amygdala is a central component of the limbic brain system and is known to be vital to understanding aspects of emotion, memory and social behaviour. Dysfunction of the structure is also thought to contribute to a variety of disorders, including autism, Alzheimer's Disease and schizophrenia. The nature of its contribution to these fundamental aspects of behaviour and cognition, and its relationship with other regions of the brain has remained elusive. However, since Aggleton's first book on the subject - The Amygdala: Neurobiological Aspects of Emotion, Memory, and Mental Dysfunction (1992) - there have been major advances in our understanding of the processes involved and a dramatic rise in the volume of research. Scientists are now able to define its contribution in an increasingly precise manner. Leading experts from around the world have contributed chapters to this comprehensive and unique review, describing current thinking on this enigmatic brain structure. This is a book for all those with an interest in the neural basis of emotion and memory.

Book Allostasis Homeostasis and the Costs of Physiological Adaptation

Download or read book Allostasis Homeostasis and the Costs of Physiological Adaptation written by Jay Schulkin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of homeostasis, the maintenance of the internal physiological environment of an organism within tolerable limits, is well established in medicine and physiology. In contrast, allostasis is a relatively new idea of 'viability through change'. With allostatic regulation by cephalic involvement, the body adapts to potentially diverse and dangerous situations through the activation of neural, hormonal, or immunological mechanisms. Allostasis explains how regulatory events maintain organismic viability, or not, in diverse contexts with varying set points of bodily needs and competing motivations. This 2005 book introduces the concept of allostasis and sets it alongside traditional views of homeostasis. It addresses basic regulatory systems and examines the behavior of bodily regulation under duress. The basic concepts of physiological homeostasis are integrated with disorders like depression, stress, anxiety and addiction. It will therefore appeal to graduate students, medical students and researchers working in physiology, epidemiology, endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, neuroscience, and psychology.

Book Handbook of Clinical Psychophysiology

Download or read book Handbook of Clinical Psychophysiology written by Graham Turpin and published by . This book was released on 1989-05-10 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty contributors from seven countries provide comprehensive coverage of the emerging discipline of psychophysiology. Includes recent results from several fields, including experimental psychology, medicine, physiology, and the neurosciences. First section surveys the scientific background of psychophysiology, subsuming the application of psychophysiology to clinical problems, and describes methods of measurement and analysis. Second section provides an overview of psychophysiological research for a number of common medical and psychiatric disorders, showing how psychophysiological techniques can be applied to clinical problems.

Book Cardiovascular Psychophysiology

Download or read book Cardiovascular Psychophysiology written by Paul A. Obrist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was my original intention to write a reasonably advanced psycho physiology text that would go beyond cardiovascular activity. This I believed would require a collaborative effort since my expertise outside of cardiovascular psychophysiology is too limited. After some initial limited efforts to organize such a venture, it became apparent that a text of this nature was not feasible. Thus, the effort was dropped. I did, however, receive encouragement to write the present monograph, which is more a personalized document than a text. As will become apparent, this monograph relies heavily on research from my laboratory and details the manner in which our conceptualizations of the issues have developed. At first, I believed such an effort premature since such a personalized document was something one composes upon retire ment. However, I was persuaded by some individuals (who shall re main anonymous, just in case they end up regretting their actions) to undertake the present effort. There are several people, who have rendered assistance in the preparation of this monograph, for whose efforts I am extremely grate ful. Extensive editorial assistance and encouragement were provided by Kathleen C. Light and Alberto Grignolo. Also assisting editorially were Ellen Z. Curtin, Allison Cahill, and Carolyn Williams. I wish also to thank my long-time secretary, Virginia Hodson, and Jenny Adams, for their typing assistance. There are six people to whom I would like to dedicate this book.

Book Physiological Correlates of Emotion

Download or read book Physiological Correlates of Emotion written by Perry Black and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Correlates of Emotion focuses on the major experimental approaches currently applied to the study of emotion and its physiological or behavioral parameters. It explores the heritability and developmental aspects of emotional behavior as well as its neurochemical and endocrine, neurophysiological, and psychophysiological correlates. In particular, it considers the modification of emotional behavior by intracranial administration of chemicals, the link between the limbic brain and psychoses, the role of nonspecific reticulo-thalamo-cortical systems in emotion, modulation of emotion by cerebral radio stimulation, and the role of brain function in emotion. Organized into five sections comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with a historical overview of research in emotion and behavior theory. It then discusses the studies dealing with heritability of emotional behavior in animals. The remaining chapters tackle the maturation of social-emotional patterns, localization of biogenic amines in the brain, psychophysiological experiments on the endocrine and autonomic correlates of emotional behavior, and psychotic manifestations of limbic dysfunction in humans. It explains the two-way radio communication with the human brain, the behavioral significance of bradycardia and hypotension, the perception and labeling of bodily changes as determinants of emotional behavior, and the conditioned emotional states. The book concludes with a phenomenological analysis of brain function in emotion. This book is essential reading for psychologists, psychiatrists, physiologists, and those working in the medical and behavioral sciences.
