Book Scientists in the Classroom

Download or read book Scientists in the Classroom written by J. Rudolph and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950s, leading American scientists embarked on an unprecedented project to remake high school science education. Dissatisfaction with the 'soft' school curriculum of the time advocated by the professional education establishment, and concern over the growing technological sophistication of the Soviet Union, led government officials to encourage a handful of elite research scientists, fresh from their World War II successes, to revitalize the nations' science curricula. In Scientists in the Classroom , John L. Rudolph argues that the Cold War environment, long neglected in the history of education literature, is crucial to understanding both the reasons for the public acceptance of scientific authority in the field of education and the nature of the curriculum materials that were eventually produced. Drawing on a wealth of previously untapped resources from government and university archives, Rudolph focuses on the National Science Foundation-supported curriculum projects initiated in 1956. What the historical record reveals, according to Rudolph, is that these materials were designed not just to improve American science education, but to advance the professional interest of the American scientific community in the postwar period as well.

Book Culture and Fertility

Download or read book Culture and Fertility written by Amelia B. Alfonso and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1980 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph is concerned with gaining an insight into the relationship between ethnic identity and population behaviour in the Philippines. Establishing the linkage between ethnic diversity and fertility differentials will have definite implications for population policies and programmes. This interest grows from the general recognition that such policies and programmes have often been planned and implemented on a national scale, with little consideration for ethnic diversity. While the relationship between ethnicity and fertility will not be directly studied or measured in this manuscript, inferences and hypotheses will be drawn from an integration of available literature on the various ethnic groups in the Philippines on the one hand and a review of relevant population data from existing surveys on the other.

Book Global Labor Migration

Download or read book Global Labor Migration written by Eileen Boris and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-12-27 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, hundreds of millions of labor migrants endure exploitation, lack of basic rights, and institutionalized discrimination and marginalization. What dynamics and drivers have created a world in which such a huge--and rapidly growing--group toils as marginalized men and women, existing as a lower caste institutionally and juridically? In what ways did labor migrants shape their living and working conditions in the past, and what opportunities exist for them today? Global Labor Migration presents new multidisciplinary, transregional perspectives on issues surrounding global labor migration. The essays go beyond disciplinary boundaries, with sociologists, ethnographers, legal scholars, and historians contributing research that extends comparison among and within world regions. Looking at migrant workers from the late nineteenth century to the present day, the contributors illustrate the need for broader perspectives that study labor migration over longer timeframes and from wider geographic areas. The result is a unique, much-needed collection that delves into one of the world’s most pressing issues, generates scholarly dialogue, and proposes cutting-edge research agendas and methods. Book Autonomy and Armed Separatism in South and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Autonomy and Armed Separatism in South and Southeast Asia written by Michelle Ann Miller and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2012 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed separatist insurgencies have created a real dilemma for many national governments of how much freedom to grant aggrieved minorities without releasing territorial sovereignty over the nation-state. This book examines different approaches that have been taken by seven states in South and Southeast Asia to try and resolve this dilemma through various offers of autonomy. Providing new insights into the conditions under which autonomy arrangements exacerbate or alleviate the problem of armed separatism, this comprehensive book includes in-depth analysis of the circumstances that lead men and women to take up arms in an effort to remove themselves from the state's borders by creating their own independent polity.

Download or read book Environment across Cultures written by E. Ehlers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disparate perceptions and conceptual frameworks of environment and the relationship between humans and nature often lead to confusion, constraints on co-operation and collaboration and even conflict when society tries to deal with today’s urgent and complex environment research and policy challenges. Such disparities in perception and "world view" are driven by many factors. They include differences in culture, religion, ethical frameworks, scientific methodologies and approaches, disciplines, political, social and philosophical traditions, life styles and consumption patterns as well as alternative economic paradigms. Distribution of poverty or wealth between north and south may thus be seen as consequence of the above mentioned disparities, which is a challenge for it’s universal reasoned evaluation. This volume discusses a wide range of factors influencing "Environment across Cultures" with a view to identifying ways and means to better understand, reflect and manage such disparities within future global environmental research and policy agendas for bridging the gap between ecology and economy as well as between societies. The book is based upon the results of a scientific symposium on this topic and covers the following sections: Cross Cultural Perception of Environment; Ethics and Nature; Environment, Sustainability and Society. Corresponding contributions were made by well-known scientific authors representing different cultural spheres in accordance with the inter-cultural approach of this effort.
