Book The Provocateur

Download or read book The Provocateur written by Lawrence Weber and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2002-03-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s the difference between CEOs like Lou Gerstner of IBM and Larry Ellison of Oracle? Between basketball coaches Phil Jackson and Bobby Knight? Or media entrepreneurs Oprah Winfrey and Rupert Murdoch? Gerstner, Jackson, and Winfrey are provocateurs, leaders who are successful not just because they have built a company or an organization, but because they have created a community. Provocateurs are changing both the form and the content of leadership and are in sync with a world being turned upside down by technology, the global economy, and the social landscape. Success has traditionally been based on command and control, and the model for many leaders was the general who marshaled people and resources to get the product out the door and onto the shelf. Early in his career, Larry Weber had the opportunity to meet or work with people like Mitch Kapor, the founder of Lotus, and Steve Jobs, the cofounder of Apple. He saw that they were more like the leaders of rock bands (or the directors of theater groups or circus ringmasters), who encourage innovation and individuality. A rock band does have a leader—think of Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones—but one who promotes the group and encourages individuality. And when a rival band comes to town, it’s not cause for head-to-head competition but an opportunity to increase the size of the pie by creating more fans, or customers, for their genre of music. Provocateurs think and act differently because they put the customer at the center of everything. They are: * Educators like Patrick McGovern, who built IDG into a publishing and research powerhouse by empowering his employees to think globally and act locally; * Entertainers like Jeff Taylor, who managed to build a bond with Monster.com employees and customers through talent and charisma; * Sherpas like Rick Wagoner, who is guiding General Motors into new territories; * Concierges like Lou Gerstner of IBM, who believe the product is important but so are customer service, delivery, financing, and every other element. They keep everything running smoothly from check-in to check-out. So, if someone says, “Your company is like a circus,” Larry Weber wants you to take it as a compliment. After all, who wouldn’t want to be compared with Cirque du Soleil, an organization that combines creativity, artistry, and caring for its people with success and profit. The people running organizations like this circus are provocateurs at the cutting edge of business. For a free subscription to the Crown Business E-Newsletter, e-mail [email protected]. Book The President and the Provocateur

Download or read book The President and the Provocateur written by Alex Cox and published by Oldcastle Books. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The President and the Provocateur explores the parallel lives of John F. Kennedy, born into wealth and celebrity, destined for glory and a violent death, and of Lee Harvey Oswald, born into poverty and obscurity, murdered in police custody and convicted - without a lawyer or a trial - of the killing of JFK. 50 years after both men were murdered, Alex Cox provides a chronological account of their lives' strange intersections, their shared interests, and the increasing body of evidence which suggests that Lee Harvey Oswald was working for some branch of the government - most likely the FBI or IRS - as an infiltrator of subversive groups, and agent provocateur.

Book excerpt: Skateboard graphics took a quantum leap in offensive potential after the sport was reborn in the '90s. Artists such as Marc McKee, Todd Francis, Johnny 'Mojo' Munnerlyn, Winston Tseng and others brought dark humour and politically incorrect topics to the forefront of their illustrations, aiming to raise serious issues and skewer values. Agents Provocateurs asks new questions of this boundary-pushing artistic genre and its place over the years. Did it save skateboarding? Are these controversial topics still relevant 20 years later?

Book Agent Provocateur for Hitler Or Churchill

Download or read book Agent Provocateur for Hitler Or Churchill written by David Tremain and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many remarkable women who served British Intelligence during the Second World War. One whose dubious claim to have worked for them is a fascinating tale involving three marriages - the first, to a spurious White Russian prince; the second to a playboy-turned-criminal involved in a major jewellery robbery in the heart of London's Mayfair in the late 1930s. After the war she became romantically involved with a well-known British Fascist, but finally married another notorious criminal whom she had met earlier during the war. The descriptions variously ascribed to her ranged from 'remarkable' and 'quite ravishing' to '...a woman whose loose living would make her an object of shame on any farm-yard'. Until now, very little has been recorded about Stella Lonsdale's life. She doesn't even merit a mention in the two official histories of MI5, even though she managed to tie them up in knots for years. This book will explore the role this strange woman may or may not have played in working for British Intelligence, the French Deuxième Bureau, or the Abwehr - German military intelligence - during the Second World War, using her MI5 files as a primary source.

Book excerpt: The French social theorist Pierre Bourdieu is now recognized as leading intellectual of the late twentieth century. This comprehensive account of Bourdieu's life and work traces the origins of his ideas and theories, explaining and exploring just what Bourdieu argued for and why. Illuminating the social, political, and philosophical strands that run through his work, Michael Grenfell's broad study takes in Bourdieu's response to The Algerian Crisis, his ideas for the reform of state education, and his views on aesthetics and the mass media. Detailed attention is also paid to Bourdieu's overtly political stance, including his critique of capitalism and his opposition to recent Western military action in Iraq, Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. Laying out the implications of Bourdieu's work and assessing the consequences, Grenfell explains why his ideas are still relevant and suggests where his ideas might be taken from here. This clear, thorough account of Bourdieu is invaluable to students, researchers and teachers of contemporary society theory.

Book Agent Provocateur Exhibitionist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timed to coincide with Agent Provocateur's 10th Anniversary, this book celebrates their famous kinky window displays. Are they real or are they mannequins? They are arousing and stimulating - cocking two fingers at British prudery and celebrating the female body, and sexual attraction. From themes such as 'weapons of mass distraction' to subliminal messages of attraction and desire, Agent Provocateur's shop windows are dramatic and daring. This very intimate shopping experience has achieved notoriety through stunning and stimulating window displays, which have become famous worldwide. This book is a stimulating look at these erotic exhibitions, which matches Enzo Peccinotti's photography with quotes from Vivienne Westwood to the Editrice of Erotic Review.

Book Yves the Provocateur

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas McEvilley
  • Publisher : McPherson
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Yves the Provocateur written by Thomas McEvilley and published by McPherson. This book was released on 2010 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For seven years, from 1956 to 1962, a young French artist electrified the European art world with visual, conceptual and performance art works far ahead of their time. His rise was wildly celebrated by some as the appearance of a prophetic genius, and derisively dismissed by others as scandalous nonsense. His monochrome paintings, body art works, fire paintings, conceptual exhibitions and music, and monumental public space works threatened to upend the very categories of art, in both Europe and America. Indeed, after his tragically premature death in 1962, some of the most far-reaching transformations in contemporary art would follow directly in his wake. But by the 1970s his reputation seemed headed for oblivion, until in 1977 a young classics scholar at Rice University, Thomas McEvilley, proposed Klein for a retrospective show to Dominique deMenil, then director of the Rice gallery, and wrote several texts about Klein that would transform our understanding of Yves Klein's aesthetics. The project grew to involve major institutions, resulting in 1982 with exhibitions in Houston, New York, Paris and Chicago. Virtually overnight Yves Klein's art reentered the art canon. Coincidentally, the career of an important critic was launched. Yves the Provocateur collects those writings of Thomas McEvilley which rejuvenated Klein's stature and hitherto were only available in journals and exhibition catalogues. In effect, it provides the "skeleton key" to clearly examine the full dimensions of Klein's accomplishment. In two opening essays, McEvilley briefly surveys and places Klein's art into context. Then, in the centerpiece essay -- which amounts to a miniature critical biography bearing all the best features of a novella -- he traces the formative and crucial events in Klein's life. Finally, he describes Klein's intellectual development, demonstrating how Klein embedded and parodied in his work the philosophical system of a particular form of Rosicrucianism.

Book Fiona Foley Provocateur

  • Publisher : Arthouse
  • Release : 2022-02-02
  • ISBN : 9780868560038
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Fiona Foley Provocateur written by Louise Martin-Chew and published by Arthouse. This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Fiona Foley is an Aboriginal artist, Badtjala woman, and provocateur, part of a highly influential generation of urban Indigenous artists. Over a career now spanning thirty years she has consistently asked questions about the frontier wars waged against Aboriginal peoples and brought the "hidden histories" of the massacres and dispossession into galleries, public spaces, and a broader, society-wide debate. In recent years, her exposure of the familial threads that join her Aboriginal heritage to the family of white missionaries who came to K'gari/Fraser Island in 1897 emerges as a tour de force. Missionary Ernest Gribble was the brother of Fiona Foley's great great grandmother, Ethel Gribble, who married Fred Wondunna.Foley has had exhibitions all over the world. Retrospective exhibitions include "Fiona Foley: Veiled Paradise" at QUT Art Museum in 2021, "Who are these strangers and where are they going?" in Ballarat and Sydney in 2019-20, and "Fiona Foley: Forbidden" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane in 2009. Her work is in every major institutional collection in Australia, many private collections, and in public spaces, including the State Library of Queensland. At the heart of this book is friendship. It details Foley's meeting with art writer Louise Martin-Chew, the progression of their collegiate relationship, and traces the momentum of crucial years in Foley's art life until her most recent segue into academia. This book was shaped as a biography given the relevance of her life to the work that she makes, and the emotional and historical investment in the disruption and disenfranchisement of her Badtjala (and all Aboriginal) people as subject matter for her art.

Book Agent Provocateur Confessions

Download or read book Agent Provocateur Confessions written by Agent Provocateur and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-12-26 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chosen for their escapism, indulgence and pursuit of the erotic, these stories explore the sensual and sexual yearnings of a woman who is sexy, provocative, and strong-minded---even if she keeps it under cover. In typical Agent Provocateur style, sex is brought out of the bedroom and paraded brazenly in front of us in a way that we cannot avoid it---nor do we want to. Themes explored range from "Ritual" a portrayal of illicit passion, through "Afraid of the Dark", a tale of strange erotic experiences in a dark room with a willing onlooker, to an unexpected threesome in New York in "The Lecture", to a frank confession of sex in a crowded bar in "Control". A heady blend of fantasy and reality they are chosen for their literary merit and their erotic content---and most importantly---for their ability to turn on men and women.
