Book Classic Maya Provincial Politics

Download or read book Classic Maya Provincial Politics written by Lisa J. LeCount and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2010-09-15 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most treatments of large Classic Maya sites such as Caracol and Tikal regard Maya political organization as highly centralized. Because investigations have focused on civic buildings and elite palaces, however, a critical part of the picture of Classic Maya political organization has been missing. The contributors to this volume chart the rise and fall of the Classic Maya center of Xunantunich, paying special attention to its changing relationships with the communities that comprised its hinterlands. They examine how the changing relationships between Xunantunich and the larger kingdom of Naranjo affected the local population, the location of their farms and houses, and the range of economic and subsistence activities in which both elites and commoners engaged. They also examine the ways common people seized opportunities and met challenges offered by a changing political landscape. The rich archaeological data in this book show that incorporating subject communities and people—and keeping them incorporated—was an on-going challenge to ancient Maya rulers. Until now, archaeologists have lacked integrated regional data and a fine-grained chronology in which to document short-term shifts in site occupations, subsistence strategies, and other important practices of the daily life of the Maya. This book provides a revised picture of Maya politics—one of different ways of governing and alliance formation among dominant centers, provincial polities, and hinterland communities.

Book Landscape Permeability for Large Carnivores in Washington

Download or read book Landscape Permeability for Large Carnivores in Washington written by Peter H. Singleton and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We conducted a regional-scale evaluation of landscape permeability for large carnivores in Washington and adjacent portions of British Columbia and Idaho. We developed geographic information system based landscape permeability models for wolves (Canis lupus), wolverine (Gulo gulo), lynx (Lynx canadensis), and grizzly bear (Ursus arctos). We also developed a general large carnivore model to provide a single generalization of the predominant landscape patterns for the four focal species. The models evaluated land cover type, road density, human population density, elevation, and slope to provide an estimate of landscape permeability. We identified five concentrations of large carnivore habitat between which we evaluated landscape permeability. The habitat concentration areas were the southern Cascade Range, the north-central Cascade Range, the Coast Range, the Kettle-Monashee Ranges, and the Selkirk-Columbia Mountains. We evaluated landscape permeability in fracture zones between these areas, including the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass area, the Fraser-Coquihalla area, the Okanogan Valley, and the upper Columbia and Pend Oreille River valleys. We identified the portions of the Washington state highway system that passed through habitat linkages between the habitat concentration areas and areas accessible to the focal species. This analysis provides a consistent measure of estimated landscape permeability across the analysis area, which can be used to develop conservation strategies, contribute to future field survey efforts, and help identify management priorities for the focal species.

Book Political Authority and Provincial Identity in Thailand

Download or read book Political Authority and Provincial Identity in Thailand written by Yoshinori Nishizaki and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The powerful Thai politician Banharn Silpa-archa has been disparaged as a corrupt operator who for years channeled excessive state funds into developing his own rural province. This book reinterprets Banharm's career and offers a detailed portrait of the voters who support him. Relying on extensive interviews, the author shows how Banharm's constituents have developed a strong provincial identity based on their pride in his advancement of their province, Suphanburi, which many now call "Banharm-buri," the place of Banharm. Yoshinori Nishizaki's analysis challenges simplistic perceptions of rural Thai voters and raises vital questions about contemporary democracy in Thailand. Yoshinori Nishizaki's close and thorough examination of the numerous public construction projects sponsored and even personally funded by Banharn clearly illustrates this politician’s canny abilities and tireless, meticulous oversight of his domain. Banharn’s constituents are aware that Suphanburi was long considered a "backward" province by other Thais—notably the Bangkok elite. Suphanburians hold the neglectful central government responsible for their province’s former sorry condition and humiliating reputation. Banharn has successfully identified himself as the antithesis to the inefficient central state by promoting rapid "development" and advertising his own role in that development through well-publicized donations, public ceremonies, and visits to the sites of new buildings and highways. Much standard literature on rural politics and society in Thailand and other democratizing countries in Southeast Asia would categorize this politician as a typical "strongman," the boss of a semiviolent patronage network that squeezes votes out of the people. That standard analysis would utterly fail to recognize and understand the grassroots realities of Suphanburi that Nishizaki has captured in his study. This compassionate, well-grounded analysis challenges simplistic perceptions of rural Thai voters and raises vital questions about contemporary democracy in Thailand.

Book Reforming Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations and the Rebuilding of Indonesia

Download or read book Reforming Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations and the Rebuilding of Indonesia written by James Alm and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is currently facing some severe challenges, both in political affairs and in economic management. One of these challenges is the recently enacted decentralization program, now well underway, which promises to have some wide-ranging consequences. This edited volume presents original papers, written by a select group of widely recognized and distinguished scholars, that take a hard, objective look at the many effects of decentralization on economic and political issues in Indonesia. There are many questions about this program: how will it be implemented, is there capacity at the local level to implement its reforms, is there sufficient local political accountability to make it work, and how will the decentralization affect the broader program of economic growth and stabilization? Topics covered include: the historical and political dimensions of decentralization, its macroeconomic effects, its effects on poverty alleviation, the assignment of expenditure and revenue functions across levels of government, the design of transfers, the role of natural resource taxation and the effects of local government borrowing. An authoritative, comprehensive collection, Reforming Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations and the Rebuilding of Indonesia will be of interest to economists and policy makers as well as students of public finance, development, and Asian economics.

Book Making World Development Work

Download or read book Making World Development Work written by Grégoire Leclerc and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors reexamine world development - usually the province of economists - as professionals trained in the natural sciences. They show how we have and might use tested scientific and technical procedures and concepts, as well as science itself, to achieve much better results than what has been characteristic of the past. Leclerc and Hall contend that to scholars with a scientific background, the process of development, and the economic logic behind it, often look almost surrealistic. The basic question at the foundation of this review is this: Why should something so important as world development, something capable of absorbing such vast sums of money and of human goodwill, something that impacts the people and the environment so much, continue to be organized and planned using economic techniques and theories that are both unconfirmed experimentally and proven to have led to development failures?"--BOOK JACKET.
