Book Empowering Electricity

Download or read book Empowering Electricity written by Julie L. MacArthur and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is known for being an energy-producing nation – with much attention being paid to the Alberta tar sands and their large carbon footprint. This book looks at a very different part of the Canadian energy sector: the hundreds of renewable energy co-ops that have sprung up across the nation. These co-ops are democratically structured, community-based organizations that use sun, wind, rivers, tides, and plant and animal waste as sources of local power generation. Empowering Electricity offers an illuminating analysis of these co-ops within the context of larger debates over climate change, renewable electricity policy, sustainable community development, and provincial power-sector ownership. It looks at the conditions that led to this new wave of co-operative development, examines their form and location, and shines a light on the promises and challenges accompanying their development.

Book Securing our energy future A review of Nova Scotia s energy sector in 2004

Download or read book Securing our energy future A review of Nova Scotia s energy sector in 2004 written by Larry Hughes and published by Canadian Centre Policy Alternatives. This book was released on 2005 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of Nova Scotia energy sector in 2004 Summary In 2003 and 2004, the Nova Scotia Department of Energy released annual "progress reports", intended to explain how the province was meeting the goals and objectives outlined in the 2001 Energy Strategy. [...] The province's existing Energy Strategy discuses energy security, primarily in terms of how the province's offshore natural gas supplies could be used to enhance the energy security of Nova Scotia, Canada and the US. [...] The reality is that the vast majority of the province's energy is imported leaving the Nova Scotia vulnerable to the volatility of the world energy markets. [...] One of the expected benefits of the offshore, touted by the Energy Strategy, was the development of a strong offshore services sector. [...] Given the decline in natural gas production from Nova Scotia's offshore, LNG appears to be one of the ways the province can continue to be a "player" in the natural gas field.

Download or read book How Ottawa Spends 2004 2005 written by G. Bruce Doern and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-10-19 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the work of academics and other experts from across Canada, Carleton University's School of Public Policy and Administration's annual book takes a focused and robust look at an era where a political coronation seemed inevitable but high expectations had to be managed downwards almost immediately. A less-than-buoyant fiscal surplus, escalating concerns about liberal ethics and corruption, and a growing volatility in public opinion are examined as are Canadians' increasingly uncertain views about the new Liberal leadership versus the old Liberal Party's ten-year hold on power. A new Conservative Party and a suddenly feisty New Democratic Party are also a central part of the new 2004-2005 Canadian political and policy milieu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its long and well-documented history, Prince Edward Island makes a compelling case study for thousands of years of human interaction with a specific ecosystem. The pastoral landscapes, red sandstone cliffs, and small fishing villages of Canada’s “garden province” are appealing because they appear timeless, but they are as culturally constructed as they are shaped by the ebb and flow of the tides. Bringing together experts from a multitude of disciplines, the essays in Time and a Place explore the island’s marine and terrestrial environment from its prehistory to its recent past. Beginning with PEI’s history as a blank slate – a land scraped by ice and then surrounded by rising seas – this mosaic of essays documents the arrival of flora, fauna, and humans, and the different ways these inhabitants have lived in this place over time. The collection offers policy insights for the province while also informing broader questions about the value of islands and other geographically bounded spaces for the study of environmental history and the crafting of global sustainability. Putting PEI at the forefront of Canadian environmental history, Time and a Place is a remarkable accomplishment that will be eagerly received and read by historians, geographers, scholars of Canadian and island studies, and environmentalists.
