Like so many other laborious literati of his the, he had founded his re nown on voluminous works in which he faded that he had concentrated all his genius, and posterity reads but a few amusing pages of them, penned in his most mirthful hours. His famous poem Dc fida at vita Christi (on the Faitb and Life of Christ) in terza rima, which overwhelmed his contemporaries with admiration and made him Dante's equal, is now quite neglected; and the Germans, who know everything, are doubtless ignorant that. Book 1500 Proverbs and Comments

Download or read book 1500 Proverbs and Comments written by Raymond B. Dunn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-10-18 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born 1944, Ray has been a devoted Christian since the 2nd November 1962. He was in bed reading a Christian book called “The Day Christ Died” (by Jim Bishop). Reading of how Jesus Christ, gave His life to die a cruel death on the cross to save him, Ray broke down, wept, and promised God that if He would help him, then he would try to behave himself from thereon. At which point he became aware someone was standing at the foot of his bed, but he was so scared, he dived under the covers, eventually to fall asleep still clutching the book. Ray is convinced that at his decision to start a new life following Jesus, the same angel that saved his life, when a boy, revealed himself again at the foot of his bed. Ray set off along the Highway following his Saviour, and by keeping a journal, has been able to recall, easily, much of the truth he has learnt. This book contains many wise proverbs and comments gathered on his journey, and his prayer is that by sharing them, others will be encouraged to turn to Jesus and start a new life traversing this same Highway.

Book The Wisdom of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Wisdom of Jesus Christ written by Phillip Ross and published by . This book was released on 2008-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Edition, 409 pages This study of Proverbs is an attempt to uncover the biblical message of Proverbs verse by verse in the light of Jesus Christ. We cannot pretend to be other than Christians who live on the redemption side of the Cross, while Proverbs was written on the anticipation side of the Cross. Nonetheless, the Christian faith is founded on the eternal consistency of God. God does not change. The God of Solomon, the author (and editor) of Proverbs, is the same God spoken of in the New Testament. In fact, the God of Solomon is Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus, the present work acknowledges this fact of faith and applies it by reading Proverbs in the light of Jesus Christ.

Excerpt: ... as those of the Bon Berger (Good Shepherd), by Jehan de Brie. The publishers issued twenty editions of it from 1518 to 1560, which did not prevent its becoming exceedingly rare. Renouard published at Didot, the elder's, in 1812, a new edition which, without becoming common, is more easily had than the former ones, and the text of which, being less inaccurate, has served us for the present translation. Antonio Cornazano, the author of a work which has been in such vogue, is hardly known except through it, although he wrote several others. Like so many other laborious literati of his time, he had founded his renown on voluminous works in which he fancied that he had concentrated all his genius, and posterity reads but a few amusing pages of them, penned in his most mirthful hours. His famous poem De fide et vita Christi (On the Faith and Life of Christ) in tera rima, which overwhelmed his contemporaries with admiration and made him Dante's equal, is now quite neglected; and the Germans, who know everything, are doubtless ignorant that, previous to Klopstock, he had composed a Messiad. His terife rime in honor of the Virgin Mary have shared the same fate, as well as his didactic poem, in nine cantos, on the art of war; the six books of Commentaries which he carefully composed in Latin, on one of the great captains of his time, Bartolommeo Coleoni, are lost among the vast compilations of Grasvius and Burmann. It is not as rival of Dante and Petrarch, nor as continuator of Vegetius and Frontinus that he has escaped from oblivion. He was born at Piacenza in 1431. A few biographers pretend that he was born at Ferrara, where he resided during the last twenty years of his life; but he himself speaks, in various parts of his works, of Piacenza as...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jesus a prophet of the eschatological Kingdom or a teacher of wisdom? These two characterizations of Jesus appear to be incompatible and, since the last century, the former has dominated our understanding of the Gospels at the expense of the latter. Proverbial sayings in the Synoptics have either been pressed into the service of eschatology-and have thus lost their character as wisdom-or have been disregarded as 'inauthentic', representing a later stage in the tradition. This book offers a critique of the method of historical reconstruction which leads to such conclusions. It also suggests an approach to the rhetoric or function of proverbial sayings, based on pragmatics, which develops the distinction between sense and force and offers some account of the rhetorical strategies involved in the use of proverbs in speech. A final chapter attempts to show how proverbial sayings might be given more significance in our understanding of Jesus' message through a reconsideration of the relationship between wisdom, eschatology and the Kingdom of God.

Download or read book Proverbs written by Ray Ortlund and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How exactly does one become wise? Pastor and teacher Ray Ortlund points out that the wisdom of God does not stand aloof, as if it were unattainable. Instead, he shows that wisdom graciously moves toward us, into our real world where we live and struggle day by day. Wisdom offers us her very best, if only we will listen. After all, "Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice," and, if wisdom troubles herself to yell, there must be a reason to listen and a means to hear. Ortlund unpacks the book of Proverbs in twenty-one straightforward sermons, providing a biblical worldview that opens up the higher meaning of money, sex, and power, as well as that of the daily routines of an average life. Drawing relevant parallels from ancient culture to present day, he helps the reader understand how the book of Proverbs is practical help for normal people going through everyday life. Most importantly, Ortlund shows how the Proverbs point to Jesus and his counsel for the perplexed, his strength for the defeated, his warning to the proud, his mercy for the broken. With careful treatment of the Scriptures and uncomplicated language, Proverbs: Wisdom that Works fills the vacuum between the layman's experience and the exegetical depth of many commentaries. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

When you think of a son trudging uphill, carrying wood for his own sacrifice because his father has decided to give him up to death, what biblical event does this bring to mind? Book excerpt: As Christians, we live in two worlds: natural and supernatural. Even with all our spiritual knowledge, we still have to live out our daily lives on this earth. We still have to make a living, for example. The "righteousness of God" still has to sweep the floor, carry out the garbage, and change the oil in the car. The "joint-heir with Christ" still has to fix meals and mow the yard. All these marvelous prosperity and protection truths we are learning about today are a reality. But as true as they are, we still need to have wisdom in the natural, everday things of life. That's where the book of Proverbs, the subject of this study, comes in. It is a prime reference source for wisdom in the practical details of daily existence. Proverbs: Wisdom for Today will give you spritual truths you can apply to the natural responsiblities of life, ultimately displaying the wisdom of God before the world in your day-to-day life.

Book Seven Abominations with a Wrench

Download or read book Seven Abominations with a Wrench written by Vernon G. Elgin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SEVEN ABOMINATIONS WITH A WRENCH interprets and comments on PROVERBS 6:16-19. The Biblical Book itself begins, “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, King of Israel.” Verse Sixteen reads, “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him.” The things begin with “haughty eyes,” and conclude with, “one who sows discord in a family.” The other five abominations are: “a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that hurry to run to evil, (and) a lying witness who testifies falsely.” Jesus introduced his own parallel list of seven defilements. They closely match Solomon’s abominations. However, Jesus dealt more with the wrench the abominations causes, than the abomination itself. SEVEN ABOMINATIONS WITH A WRENCH analyzes the abominations from a Biblical/ theological perspective. The Book attaches a list of “Discussion Questions.”

Download or read book From Proverbs to Parables written by Carole J. Lambert and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to suggest that Jesus as a creative artist was heavily influenced by the Hebrew Bible's Book of Proverbs. It posits that he created some of his short parables from specific verses found in Proverbs, suggests that he expanded some basic sapient themes present in this book when composing his parables, and shows him reacting negatively to the commonly held belief that this Book's overall concept of wisdom is that the wise are rewarded and the fools are punished by God through their own self-destructive choices and subsequent actions. Thus this text points to Jesus as an inventive artist, a concept not usually associated with him, and it complicates simplistic ways of defining biblical wisdom. Part I demonstrates how Jesus might have created his tales from specific proverbs found in the Book of Proverbs. The overarching theme for these parables is wisdom: Jesus as wisdom (I Cor. 1:24) speaking wisdom in new ways. Part II discusses Jesus as a self-actualized artist who creatively designed these tales. It examines what shaped Jesus' artistry, what might have been the sources of his literacy, why he might have chosen to expand individual proverbs imaginatively in order to create his moral tales, and how his wisdom enhanced conventional attitudes toward wisdom as the former included and clarified his new "kingdom of God" concepts. This book could be used in courses treating Literature and the Bible, Biblical Art, The Humanity of Jesus, and Wisdom Literature Common to Christians and Jews.
