Most of these German dialect proverbs were brought to America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by immigrants from the Rhenish Palatinate and southern Germany as well as northern Switzerland. This proverbial wisdom is of great sociolinguistic value for the study of an American minority as well as for comparative dialect and proverb studies.
