Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of oral literature in the Pashtun language create their work at a far remove from any books. Generally deprived of the support of schools and universities, their compositions are inseparable from song. Their poetry is never declaimed; rather, their rhyme and rhythm have melodic value. These popular improvisations do not exalt mystic love. In them there is no aspiration whatsoever to an unfathomable and incommunicable heaven, nor devotion to the lord, nor praise for an absolute master, nor any Adonis. To the contrary, they are songs of the earth. They celebrate nature, mountains, rivers, dawn and night’s magnetic space. They are songs of war and honor, shame and love, beauty and death. The repression of Afghan women has caused untold suffering, particularly through moral subjugation. Infant daughters and their mothers are received with scorn and shame, and lead lives of subordination and humiliation. Their rebellion against these tribal codes comes only through suicide and song. Translated from the Pashtun into French by the eminent Sayd Bahodine Majrouh, the greatest Afghan poet of the twentieth century, his text has been rendered into English in the expert hands of Marjolijn de Jager of the Translation Department at NYU.

  • Pages : 506 pages

Download or read book Bann written by Septimus Smet Thorburn and published by . This book was released on 1876 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bannú, or Our Afghan Frontier is an account of Bannu District in British India (located in present-day northwestern Pakistan). The Bannu Valley was seized by the East India Company in 1848 and the district formed in 1861. The author, Septimus Smet Thorburn, was an official in the Indian Civil Service and the settlement officer in the district. The book is in two parts. Part one, consisting of six chapters, covers the geography, history, and administrative system of Bannu, with emphasis on British rule and its interaction with local traditions, customs, and patterns of authority and land tenure and ownership. Part two, which comprises the bulk of the book, deals with customs and folklore. It includes an introductory chapter entitled "Social Life, Customs, Beliefs and Superstitions of the Peasantry," and separate chapters devoted to "Popular Stories, Ballads and Riddles" and "Pashto Proverbs Translated into English." The final chapter gives the texts of the same proverbs--406 in all--in Pushto. The stories, ballads, and riddles are brief--generally a few paragraphs--and are classed in five categories: humorous and moral, comic and jocular, fables, Marwat ballads (relating to the Pushto Marwat tribe living in Bannu), and riddles. The proverbs are grouped according to the topics to which they relate, for example, begging, boasting, bravery, and so forth, and for many of the proverbs a brief explanation is given of its meaning and application. A short appendix deals with the complicated system of land allotments in the different tappas (traditional subdivisions) of the Bannu region. The book includes a map of the Bannu District with an inset map showing its relationship to the neighboring parts of Afghanistan and the regions of Waziristan, Kashmir, and the Punjab.

Book African Proverbs for All Ages

Download or read book African Proverbs for All Ages written by Johnnetta Betsch Cole and published by Roaring Brook Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Proverbs for All Ages is a beautifully-illustrated, engaging picture book about the power of proverbs, how they evolve over time, and the wisdom of various cultures in Africa. It has been said that a proverb is a short sentence based on long experience. Whether you are young or old, proverbs can open your mind to a whole new way of seeing the world. We underestimate children when we assume they are incapable of understanding metaphor and deeper meaning. There are multiple ways that children learn, but for each method by which they learn, they need their imagination engaged and their visual sensibilities ignited. And as adults, we underestimate ourselves when we allow our lives to be about practical matters only. Proverbs can stir our soul and spark our imagination. --Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D. President Emerita of Spelman and Bennett Colleges In African Proverbs for All Ages, noted anthropologist and educator Dr. Johnetta Betsch Cole and award-winning illustrator Nelda LaTeef invite children and adults to explore and reflect on complex notions about relationships, identity, society, and the human condition. Book When Elephants Fight

Download or read book When Elephants Fight written by Eric Walters and published by Orca Book Publishers. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. This ancient proverb of the Kikuyu people, a tribal group in Kenya, Africa, is as true today as when the words were first spoken, perhaps thousands of years ago. Its essence is simplicity—when the large fight, it is the small who suffer most. And when it comes to war, the smallest, the most vulnerable, are the children. When Elephants Fight presents the stories of five children—Annu, Jimmy, Nadja, Farooq and Toma—from five very different and distinct conflicts—Sri Lanka, Uganda, Sarajevo, Afghanistan and the Sudan. Along with these very personal accounts, the book also offers brief analyses of the history and geopolitical issues that are the canvas on which these conflicts are cast. When Elephants Fight is about increasing awareness. For the future to be better than the past, better than the present, we must help equip our children with an awareness and understanding of the world around them and their ability to bring about change. Gandhi stated, "If you are going to change the world, start with the children."

Book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases

Download or read book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Bartlett Jere Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Book excerpt: Critical to the sustainability of this growing movement is the ability of Christians to read, reflect on, and see the implications of the Bible for themselves and their daily contexts – their frontlines. It’s a goal that we’ve pursued through a variety of publications - the work series, Frutifulness on the Frontline, and the Whole of Life for Christ. What we have not done is to self-consciously equip people to read different genres of the Bible through a whole-life lens. In light of this, we’re developing a series of Bible studies which align with LICC’s mission and activities and support biblical literacy in the UK church more broadly. The study series has emerged from the regular Bible Days we’ve been running over the last years for leaders and preachers. The whole-life aspect of the Bible is seen not only in the big story it tells, but also in the different kinds of writings it contains – stories and songs, laws and letters, proverbs and parables, poetry and prophecy. It’s the specific lens of genre which has provided insight into the Word of God for the whole of life through LICC’s Bible Days. The Proposal We propose to publish a 7-study series for individuals and small groups around the main genres of the Bible that will enable Christians to: · Study seven single books of the Bible (independently of one another, though they form a series) ·Develop insight and skills in reading 7 different genres of Bible literature · Reflect on the implications of each book and genre for the whole of life ·Develop applications which support and direct their life as disciples in their everyday, frontline contexts In addition, the series will: · Provide a resource to church leaders that supports their preaching and programmes in creating sustainable whole-life disciplemaking communities Complement a ‘Preaching Pack’

Book excerpt: Unlike most Afghan history books that focus on rulers and wars, Afghan Patriot is the story of a scholarship student from the province of Laghman who went to America and returned to his beloved county in 1948 with a doctorate degree in education, an American wife, and a dream-"to help my country catch up with the caravan of civilization." As told by his wife, Joan Kayeum, this is the story of how Dr. Abdul Kayeum's relentless efforts throughout his educational and political careers contributed to a golden age in Afghanistan, a time when its political system during the 1960's and 1970's evolved into a constitutional democracy and the beginnings of a liberal society were forged. The text is supplemented with photographs of Dr. Kayeum as his career advances, and includes selected excerpts of his letters to world leaders. All net proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Joan Kayeum's foundation, FEDA (Foundation for Educational Development of Afghans) and other charities designed to promote the education of young girls and boys who live in the provinces of Afghanistan.
