Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Americans know the history-changing story of the men of the USS Mason, the only African-American sailors to take a World War II warship into combat. At a time when most blacks in the Navy were relegated to stewards or laborers, the crew of the USS Mason escorted six convoys across the perilous North Atlantic, helped to win the Battle of the Atlantic and directly influenced President Harry S. Truman’s decision to integrate all of America’s armed forces. Recommended in 1944 for a commendation for their heroic actions during a violent storm, the Mason sailors finally received that commendation in 1995. The Navy further honored the men by naming a new destroyer (DDG 87) after the crew of the Mason. This book is the basis of an award-winning PBS documentary and the feature film Proud starring Ossie Davis. The USS Mason story is featured in The National Museum of African American History and Culture.

  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press

  • ISBN : 0807860417
  • Pages : 351 pages

Download or read book Proudly We Can Be Africans written by James H. Meriwether and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mid-twentieth century witnessed nations across Africa fighting for their independence from colonial forces. By examining black Americans' attitudes toward and responses to these liberation struggles, James Meriwether probes the shifting meaning of Africa in the intellectual, political, and social lives of African Americans. Paying particular attention to such important figures and organizations as W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., and the NAACP, Meriwether incisively utilizes the black press, personal correspondence, and oral histories to render a remarkably nuanced and diverse portrait of African American opinion. Meriwether builds the book around seminal episodes in modern African history, including nonviolent protests against apartheid in South Africa, the Mau Mau war in Kenya, Ghana's drive for independence under Kwame Nkrumah, and Patrice Lumumba's murder in the Congo. Viewing these events within the context of their own changing lives, especially in regard to the U.S. civil rights struggle, African Americans have continually reconsidered their relationship to contemporary Africa and vigorously debated how best to translate their concerns into action in the international arena. Grounded in black Americans' encounters with Africa, this transnational history sits astride the leading issues of the twentieth century: race, civil rights, anticolonialism, and the intersections of domestic race relations and U.S. foreign relations.

Book What So Proudly We Hailed

Download or read book What So Proudly We Hailed written by Marc Leepson and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What So Proudly We Hailed is the first full-length biography of Francis Scott Key in more than 75 years. In this fascinating look at early America, historian Marc Leepson explores the life and legacy of Francis Scott Key. Standing alongside Betsy Ross, Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, Paul Revere, and John Hancock in history, Key made his mark as an American icon by one single and unforgettable act, writing "The Star-Spangled Banner." Among other things, Leepson reveals: • How the young Washington lawyer found himself in Baltimore Harbor on the night of September 13-14, 2014 • The mysterious circumstances surrounding how the poem he wrote, first titled "The Defense of Ft. M'Henry," morphed into the National Anthem • Key's role in forming the American Colonization Society, and his decades-long fervent support for that controversial endeavor that sent free blacks to Africa • His adamant opposition to slave trafficking and his willingness to represent slaves and freed men and women for free in Washington's courts • Key's role as a confidant of President Andrew Jackson and his work in Jackson's "kitchen cabinet" • Key's controversial actions as U.S. Attorney during the first race riot in Washington, D.C., in 1835. Publishing to coincide with the 200th anniversary of "The Star Spangled Banner" in 2014, What So Proudly We Hailed reveals unexplored details of the life of an American patriot whose legacy has been largely unknown until now.

Book Going 15 Rounds With Jerry Izenberg

Download or read book Going 15 Rounds With Jerry Izenberg written by Ed Odeven and published by Ed Odeven. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Izenberg’s career in newspapers began eight decades ago as a college student. And since 1962, he has penned sports columns for The Star-Ledger, a New Jersey newspaper. Memories from throughout his career, insights on mentors and general impressions of historic figures (Muhammad Ali, Grambling University football coach Eddie Robinson, thoroughbred legend Secretariat and columnists Red Smith and Jim Murray, among others) provide an overview of what he's observed and written about in his distinguished career, which included 53 consecutive Super Bowls through 2019. Izenberg’s upbringing in New Jersey ignited a love of baseball at a young age, and tales from the ballpark are presented, from the 1930s in Newark to Fidel Castro in Havana in the late 1950s to decades later. Izenberg connected with people and told meaningful stories about their lives, including Nelson Mandela's after meeting him and watching Olympic boxing with him in the stands in Barcelona in 1992. It's a topic briefly explored in the book. Above all, Going 15 Rounds With Jerry Izenberg illuminates the breadth and depth of his extraordinary career and gives a wide range of prominent sports media members an opportunity to also reflect on his career and legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecorse, the oldest downriver community, was the site of many critical battles from the French and Indian War through the War of 1812 as French and English settlers forged new homes in the Michigan wilderness. By 1827, the scattering of settlers had developed into a small community, and the township of Ecorse was formed. During the Prohibition era, the peaceful riverfront was transformed into hideouts for rumrunners and other nefarious lawbreakers. From a prosperous shipbuilding industry to a championship rowing club and the Detroit River runs made by the Bob-Lo boats, Ecorses maritime history is one that continues to engage residents and impel the community forward.
