Book Voices of Winchester World War II Veterans

Download or read book Voices of Winchester World War II Veterans written by Adrian J. O'Connor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the Greatest Generation come alive in the hands of longtime local journalist Adrian O'Connor What made the D-Day attack on Omaha Beach so remarkable was that it was carried out largely out by National Guardsman - men of the 29th Infantry Division who had never before seen combat. One of the companies that was part of this historic day hailed from the environs of Winchester, Virginia. Winchester's martial gallantry was hardly restricted to the beaches of Normandy, though. A future city councilor came ashore at Anzio, Italy. A future school principal fought in what may have been the Pacific's toughest battle, Iwo Jima. Local men held the line at the climactic Battle of the Bulge, flew over Europe and the oil fields of Ploesti and even escaped a German prisoner-of-war camp.

While he focuses on the military, the leadership lessons he shares work in war and peace, on land and at sea, and in small and large organizations. Ulmer defines leadership, shares his personal philosophy of leadership, reveals tips on measuring a leaders success, and outlines behaviors that can lead to successas well as those that can lead to disaster. He also wades into the debate over whether leaders are born or made, explains why its important to respect the authority and responsibility of subordinate leaders, and how to manage organizations and large staffs. No matter what your military rankand even if youre a civilian leaderthis guide will be a leadership teaching tool that youll refer to for years to come.

Book Proud to be

Download or read book Proud to be written by Kelly Flinn and published by Random House (NY). This book was released on 1997 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary young woman. An extraordinary controversy. This is Kelly Flinn's story--the one she couldn't tell when she was in uniform. "I fell in love with the wrong man."--Kelly Flinn She is the first woman to pilot a B-52, a charismatic twenty-six-year-old from a proper Georgia family who has always distinguished herself--as a fifteen- year-old at U.S. Space Camp and as a cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy. There, she overcame considerable odds and earned a coveted position as a combat pilot. But nothing prepared Lieutenant Kelly Flinn for the controversy that erupted when the military began an investigation into her relationship with Marc Zigo, a man who lied to her about his marital status and then betrayed her to military authorities. Flinn was forced to resign amid charges of disobeying orders--charges she disputes in this poignant and powerful memoir. This is the story of Flinn's love affair with flying . . . and the love affair that ended her trailblazing Air Force career. This is also the story of a determined young woman fighting for her rightful place in a military establishment run by men, many of whom are not yet ready to accept a female combat pilot. Flinn reveals examples of hypocrisy and sexism in the military that are, by any standard, infuriating. She rose higher and fell harder, but Kelly Flinn's story is universal, and it powerfully dramatizes the fault lines between our private and professional lives. With disarming candor, Flinn takes us inside her world. We feel her exhilaration as she soars through the sky and commands her own plane, and we share her horror as the love she dreamed of turns into a nightmare and she must battle the military's sexpolice behind closed doors. Kelly Flinn has been called "the Hester Prynne of our time," and her life has been depicted in the media as a combination of Top Gun and The Scarlet Letter. In Proud to Be, she speaks in her own voice--determined, vulnerable, and all too human.

Book From Rags to Riches

Download or read book From Rags to Riches written by Wilbur White and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of my mother was all I could think about as I sat on a limb in the cherry tree which towered over the hog lot. But when I woke up the next morning in my own bunk with the clean white sheets and my very own flashlight, surrounded by other boys my age, I knew I was in for an amazing life. We dressed and went down to breakfast and what a spread! It was made complete by eating in a large room with 35 other boys and girls and to top that off, we had peach preserves and homemade butter on hot biscuits. What a life for a five-year-old. We kids played long hours in the hills of Beattyville, KY. Christmas was packed with gifts and food given to us from Taylor Tire in Lexington. They took us to the Shrine Circus every year and gave us airplane rides, too. Man, what better life could a kid ask for? Except when I popped open the window of the plane and we thought we were going to be sucked out! Jack and Helen Brown knew something about running an orphanage. We raised much of our own food and animals and he owned a blacktopping company where we boys worked. Fearing for my life in boarding schools made me aware of my surroundings, and being expelled for throwing a dirt clot over a staff member’s head was no fun either. Finally a boarding school where I was appreciated and where I would meet the love of my life. Then on to Paris Island, NC to meet up with Uncle Sam! We hit it off from the start. Oh wait! That drill instructor that “leaped in my chest”; oh well, it only hurt till I could breathe again. Vietnam, Fire Department, Church, Royal Rangers, Retirement, Family; my three angels have always been there. You will meet them.

Book City Notebook A Reporter s Portrait of a Vanishing New York

Download or read book City Notebook A Reporter s Portrait of a Vanishing New York written by McCandlish Phillips and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McCandlish Phillips, whose by-line has been familiar to readers of The New York Times since 1955, has looked into just about every corner of the city and has written about nearly every aspect of its life. New York is not the same city today as it was yesterday. You cannot set foot in the same New York twice. Yet you can capture its momentary essence in City Notebook. One of the best metropolitan reporters of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s has brought together his best pieces on the City’s life. You will learn, for example, about the “rainbow rain” that sometimes falls on the City, about the Great Bee Roundup, the Case of the Garrulous Parrot, the Small World of Melvin Krulewitch, and the fate of the Gowanus Canal. The reality of New York is made up of millions of such instances, a mosaic of people, places, and things. The ones in this book have been chosen because they are compulsively fascinating, utterly irreplaceable, or just very funny. Gay Talese has called McCandlish Phillips “one of the best reporters” on The Times. People who know his byline relish his crisp style and dry wit.

Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

In March of 1943, Scott Chantler's grandfather, Law Chantler, shipped out across the Atlantic for active service with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, along with his best friend, Jack, a fellow officer. Not long afterward, they would find themselves making a rocky crossing of the English Channel, about to take part in one of the most pivotal and treacherous military operations of World War II: the Allied invasion of Normandy.
