Download or read book What the Thunder Said written by John Conrad and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By every principle of war, every shred of military logic, logistics support to Canada’s Task Force Orion in Afghanistan should have collapsed in July 2006. There are few countries that offer a greater challenge to logistics than Afghanistan, and yet Canadian soldiers lived through an enormous test on this deadly international stage - a monumental accomplishment. Canadian combat operations were widespread across southern Afghanistan in 2006, and logistics soldiers worked in quiet desperation to keep the battle group moving. Only now is it appreciated how precarious the logistics operations of Task Force Orion in Kandahar really were. What the Thunder Said is an honest, raw recollection of incidents and impressions of Canadian warfighting from a logistics perspective. It offers solid insight into the history of military logistics in Canada and explores in some detail the dramatic erosion of a once-proud corner of the army from the perspective of a battalion commander.

Download or read book Surprised at Being Alive written by Robert F. Curtis and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes you do everything right, but it just isnÕt your day. A part fails and your helicopter comes apart in flight, or, another aircraft runs into you and the pieces of both fall to the ground below, or the enemy gunner pulls the trigger at just the right moment and his rounds find your aircraft in exactly the right spot to take it out of the sky. Whichever way it happens, it wasnÕt your day. Which is why, after 24 years and over 5,000 flight hours with four armed services, Major Robert Curtis was so surprised at being alive when he passed his retirement physical. Starting with enlisting in the Army to fly helicopters during Vietnam, and continuing on through service with the National Guard, Marine Corps and Royal Navy, he flew eight different helicoptersÑfrom the wooden-bladed OH-13E, through the Chinook, SeaKnight and SeaKing, in war and peace around the world. During that time over 50 of his friends died in crashes, both in combat and in accidents, but somehow his skill, and not an inconsiderable amount of luck and superstition, saw him through. His flying career began with a misbegotten strategy for beating the draft by enlisting. With the Vietnam War raging full blast in 1968 the draft was inevitable, so he wanted to at least get some small measure of control of his future. Although he had no thought of flying when he walked into the recruiting office, he walked out signed up to be a helicopter pilot. What he did not know was that 43% of all the aircraft sent to Vietnam were destroyed in combat or accidents. Soon he was in the thick of the war, flying Chinooks with the 101st Airborne. After Vietnam he left the Army, but kept flying in the National Guard while going to college. He was accepted at two law schools, but flying is addictive, so he instead enlisted in the USMC to fly some more. Over the next 17 years he would fly around the world off US and British ships from Egypt to Norway and all points in between. His engaging story will be a delight to all aviation enthusiasts.
Download or read book Next Train Out written by Sallie Showalter and published by . This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the U.S. enters the Second World War, Effie Mae Board thinks she knows her husband of seven years. But a chance discovery prompts her to untangle the secrets of his early life and the wreckage he has left in his wake. As she struggles with these revelations--and examines the decisions she herself made as a young mother--the reader glimpses her husband, Lyons, recklessly careening from one fresh start to another as he tries to find his place after returning from the Great War. NEXT TRAIN OUT started with the author's desire to learn something about a missing grandfather and turned into a picaresque tale of an enigmatic rogue searching for a different life. Is Lyons a heartless narcissist and a scoundrel, or a lost soul trying to navigate the cultural fractures and shifting mores of the early twentieth century? Whatever you decide about Lyons, there's no doubt who Effie Mae is. Readers have fallen in love with the straight-shooting native of the Eastern Kentucky coal camps who tries her level best to understand Lyons and accept him, despite his transgressions. She and Lyons come from vastly different worlds, but they find uncommon common ground in their resiliency and their fearless embrace of each other.
