Download or read book Legal Aspects of International Drug Control written by S. K. Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for suppressing the illicit traffic in drugs can hardly be over-emphasized. Yet, the licit uses of drugs, especially for medical and scientific needs, cannot be suppressed. Apparently, it is a ques tion of determining the vvorld requirements of drugs for such legiti mate uses, and of producing and manufacturing them accordingly. Owing to their multifarious medical uses in various parts of the world, it proves to be almost impossible to determine exactly the amount of drugs required for legitimate purposes. There is also the complicating factor that drugs are used for sociological and religious reasons, which have a long history. Not only arc the licit uses and legitimate amounts of drugs difficult to determine but also such difficulties give rise to illicit traffic in them. Yet, it is believed that a concerted international policy, coupled with national co-operation, on various facets of the related problems-namely, limitation of production and/or manufacture of drugs, restriction on cultivation of plants that may contribute to addiction-producing substances, training and rehabilitation of drug addicts, and efficient national administration-would help eradicate drug-abuse. In search of an appropriate remedy, this book has been devoted to a practical study of the problem and to exploring, in this area of international law, the relationship between the political and econ omic interests and the international economic order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the origins, history and organisation of the international system of narcotic drug control with a specific focus on heroin, cannabis and cocaine. It argues that the century-long quest to eliminate the production, trade in and use of narcotic drugs has been a profound failure. The statistics produced by the international and domestic narcotic drug control agencies point to a sustained expansion of the drug trade, despite the imposition of harsh criminal sanctions against those engaged, as producers, traffickers or consumers, in the narcotic drugs market. The roots of this major international policy failure are traced back to the outdated ideology of prohibition, which is shown to be counterproductive, utopian and a fundamentally inadequate basis for narcotic drug policy in the twenty-first century. Prohibition, championed by many US policy makers, has left the international community poorly positioned to confront those changes to the drug trade and drug markets that have resulted from globalisation. Moreover, prohibition based approaches are causing more harm than good, as is demonstrated through reference to issues such as HIV/AIDS, the environment, conflict, development and social justice. As the drug control system approaches its centenary, there are signs that the global consensus on narcotic drug prohibition is fracturing. Some European and South American states are pushing for a new approach based on regulation, decriminalisation and harm reduction. But those seeking to revise prohibition strategies faces entrenched resistance, primarily by the U.S. This important text argues that successive American governments have pursued a contradictory approach; acting decisively against the narcotic drug trade at home and abroad, while at the same time working with drug traffickers and producer states when it is in America's strategic interest. As a result, US policy approaches emerge as a decisive factor in accounting for the failure of prohibition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive collection of data on the treaty law of Indonesia which has its origin in the assumption that the availability of these data is among the preconditions for a correct understanding of the Indonesian international position and its international rights and duties. There is no official collection of Indonesian treaties in existence. Part One presents a concise description of the Indonesian law and practice concerNing treaty-making power and the publication of treaties. It deals with the constitutional provisions and their interpretation and application and places them in a wider perspective. Part Two comprises chronological indexes of multilateral and bilateral treaties. These indexes contain data on forty items, where available, regarding each treaty, such as the sources of the texts, the subject matter, the Indonesian consent to be bound, Indonesian reservations and declarations, the date of ratification, amendments, revisions and replacement. These main indexes are supplemented by a subject index and indexes of Acts of Approval and Presidential Ratification Decrees which are published in the Indonesian State Gazette. The volume will be of use to practising lawyers involved in Indonesian transactions, officials in the field of international relations involving Indonesia and academic researchers on the international law of treaties.

Download or read book Digitized Statecraft in Multilateral Treaty Participation written by Takashi Inoguchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a rarity in that it opens a genuinely creative new vista for understanding global politics as distinguished from international politics, enhancing the vision for understanding global subjects such as multilateral treaties and the Covid-19 virus. Six hundred multilateral treaties deposited in the UN are conceptualized as a bundle of quasi-social contracts by sovereign states. A state’s participation in multilateral treaties is envisaged as digitized statecraft. Using a state’s physical actions and treaties’ attributes, 193 profiles of statecraft are analyzed with the implications for the future of global politics. This book demonstrates that multilateral treaties are both a vehicle and an agency in the globalization trend; thus, both state and international actors influence a state’s joining multilateral treaties. The book represents a marriage of international law and applied information science. It provides a framework for empirical modeling based on artificial intelligence and analyzes this framework in terms of international law and international relations. This book thus creates a new understanding of global politics.
