Book Secretory Systems and Toxins

Download or read book Secretory Systems and Toxins written by Michal Linial and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the relationships between toxins and one of the most fundamental processes in any living cell - the secretory cycle. The reader will find up-to-date information on secretion, generated by experts in this fast evolving field. In the last decade extensive molecular and cellular studies have exposed the molecular similarity among most known secretory systems. In this book secretion is discussed from its basic mode found in yeast up to its most sophisticated version in neurotransmitter release in nerve terminals. A comprehensive view on the mode of action of toxins which block secretion but also those which cause hyper-activation of exocytosis is provided. This book addresses the issue of toxin action by deciphering the molecular and cellular basis of exocytosis in various organisms and cellular contents.

Book Modulation of Protein Function

Download or read book Modulation of Protein Function written by Daniel Atkinson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modulation of Protein Function, Volume XIII, presents the proceedings of the ICN-UCLA Symposium on Molecular and Cellular Biology held in Keystone, Colorado, from February 25-March 2, 1979. The symposium aimed to bring together workers from several fields, all of which deal with the modulation of protein function. The discussion of representative metabolic control systems, ranging from single enzyme responses to complex regulatory cascades, and the control of photosynthesis and of protein synthesis and enzyme inactivation, dealt with the general topic at perhaps its most fundamental cellular level. Modulations and conformational changes in proteins that underlie higher-level interactions, such as those involved in cyclic nucleotide function, sensing and chemotactic response to foreign materials, and the complement system, were also described. Two talks dealt with potential clinical relevance of phenomena of the types described by other participants. The book is organized into nine parts with papers covering the following topics: modulation of enzymes of intermediary metabolism (Part I); modulation and inactivation (Part II); photosynthesis and storage polysaccharides (Part III); cascade systems (Part IV); protein phosphorylation (Part V); methylation in chemotaxis (Part VI); cyclic GMP and cyclic CMP (Part VII); protein synthesis (Part VIII); and clinical implications (IX).

Download or read book Tau oligomers written by Jesus Avila and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed of intracellular aggregates of tau protein are a key neuropathological feature of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases, collectively termed tauopathies. The abundance of NFTs has been reported to correlate positively with the severity of cognitive impairment in AD. However, accumulating evidences derived from studies of experimental models have identified that NFTs themselves may not be neurotoxic. Now, many of tau researchers are seeking a “toxic” form of tau protein. Moreover, it was suggested that a “toxic” tau was capable to seed aggregation of native tau protein and to propagate in a prion-like manner. However, the exact neurotoxic tau species remain unclear. Because mature tangles seem to be non-toxic component, “tau oligomers” as the candidate of “toxic” tau have been investigated for more than one decade. In this topic, we will discuss our consensus of “tau oligomers” because the term of “tau oligomers” [e.g. dimer (disulfide bond-dependent or independent), multimer (more than dimer), granular (definition by EM or AFM) and maybe small filamentous aggregates] has been used by each researchers definition. From a biochemical point of view, tau protein has several unique characteristics such as natively unfolded conformation, thermo-stability, acid-stability, and capability of post-translational modifications. Although tau protein research has been continued for a long time, we are still missing the mechanisms of NFT formation. It is unclear how the conversion is occurred from natively unfolded protein to abnormally mis-folded protein. It remains unknown how tau protein can be formed filaments [e.g. paired helical filament (PHF), straight filament and twisted filament] in cells albeit in vitro studies confirmed tau self-assembly by several inducing factors. Researchers are still debating whether tau oligomerization is primary event rather than tau phosphorylation in the tau pathogenesis. Inhibition of either tau phosphorylation or aggregation has been investigated for the prevention of tauopathies, however, it will make an irrelevant result if we don’t know an exact target of neurotoxicity. It is a time to have a consensus of definition, terminology and methodology for the identification of “tau oligomers”.
