A needed resource for researchers, clinical professionals, postdocs, and graduate students, this publication will further discuss basic biology development and physiology, how processes go awry in disease states, and how the defective pathways are targeted for therapy. This book will assist both the new and experienced clinician's and researcher's need for science translation of background research into clinical applications, bridging the gap between research and clinical knowledge.

Book Stress Response

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen M. Keyse
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2007-10-26
  • ISBN : 1592590543
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Stress Response written by Stephen M. Keyse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammalian cells have evolved a complex multicomponent machinery that enables them to sense and respond to a wide variety of potentially toxic agents present in their environment. These stress responses are often associated with an increased cellular capacity to tolerate normally lethal levels of an insult. The realization that the mammalian stress response may be intimately linked with many human diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, ischemia, fever, infection, and cancer, has led to an explosion of interest in this research area. Stress Response: Methods and Protocols brings together a diverse array of practical methodologies that may be employed to address various aspects of the response of mammalian cells to environmental stress. The p- tocols are carefully described by authors who have both devised and succe- fully employed them, and they represent a mixture not only of well-established techniques, but also new technologies at the leading edge of research. The areas covered include the detection and assay of stress-induced damage, the acti- tion of signal transduction pathways, stress-inducible gene expression, and stress protein function. Although no volume of this size can be comprehensive and the topics covered reflect a personal choice, it is hoped that it will prove of subst- tial interest and use to a wide range of research workers in the field.

Book Pharmacological and Non Pharmacological Therapy for Obesity and Diabetes volume II

Download or read book Pharmacological and Non Pharmacological Therapy for Obesity and Diabetes volume II written by Guilherme Zweig Rocha and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the success of the previous collection Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Therapy for Obesity and Diabetes, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may induce inflammation and impair health, leading to metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Their prevalence is increasing and is considered a major public health concern in the 21st century. While numerous mechanisms have been proposed for this epidemic of obesity, it is well agreed upon that lack of physical activity and high calorie intake plays causal roles. Understanding the causes that lead to obesity and also its prevention or reversion are of public health priority. This could be managed by either modification of lifestyle (through physical activity to restore energy balance or reduction of calorie intake, proper diet that is rich in fiber, increasing energy outlay) or using adequate medication.

Book Sports Nutrition

  • Author : Ron J. Maughan
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 3805596979
  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Sports Nutrition written by Ron J. Maughan and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diet and athletic performance -- new aspects Diet significantly affects athletic performance, and adoption of a dietary strategy that meets an athlete's nutrition goals will maximize the possibility of competitive success. Over the years, the focus has shifted from a high intake of (animal) protein to the role of carbohydrate and water. Today, there is a growing recognition that the primary role of sports nutrition may be to promote the adaptations taking place in muscle and other tissues in response to the training stimulus. There is also much interest in the implications of manipulation of the fat and carbohydrate content of the diet. This publication contains the proceedings of the 69th Nestl Nutrition Institute Workshop held in Hawaii in October 2010. The aim of the workshop was to explore the effects of nutritional manipulations on the metabolic responses to acute and chronic exercise. Another goal was to further identify the possible role of these dietary interventions in promoting adaptive changes in muscle, adipose tissues and other potential sites of limitation to exercise performance. Papers cover the three macronutrients carbohydrate, fat and protein, plus an additional chapter on water, together with the accompanying discussions.

Book The key role of ubiquitination and sumoylation in signaling and cancer

Download or read book The key role of ubiquitination and sumoylation in signaling and cancer written by Hui-Kuan Lin and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ubiquitination and Sumoylation are two important posttranslational modifications that play pivotal roles in a variety of biological functions. Although Ubiquitination is traditionally viewed as a critical mark targeting proteins for proteasome-dependent degradation, recent studies reveal that it also plays nonproteolytic functions. In contrast, Sumoylation is long thought not to target proteins for degradation, accumulating evidence suggests that it can serve a priming effect prerequisite for ubiquitination, thereby inducing protein ubiquitination and degradation. Thus, there is an important cross-talk between sumoylation and ubiquitination in determining protein fate. Deregulation in these two marks may cause aberrant activity of proteins and in turn contributes to cancer development. In this Research Topic, we accept review articles, perspectives, research articles covering any one or both of these two posttranslational modifications in regulating diverse signal transduction pathways and providing the novel insights in unraveling the puzzle as to how they may regulate cancer progression and metastasis.
