Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hate crimes against Native Americans are a common occurrence, Barbara Perry reveals, although most go unreported. In this eye-opening book, Perry shines a spotlight on these acts, which are often hidden in the shadows of crime reports. She argues that scholarly and public attention to the historical and contemporary victimization of Native Americans as tribes or nations has blinded both scholars and citizens alike to the victimization of individual Native Americans. It is these acts against individuals that capture her attention. Silent Victims is a unique contribution to the literature on hate crime. Because most extant literature treats hate crimesÑeven racial violenceÑrather generically, this work breaks new ground with its findings. For this book, Perry interviewed nearly 300 Native Americans and gathered additional data in three geographic areas: the Four Corners region of the U.S. Southwest, the Great Lakes, and the Northern Plains. In all of these locales, she found that bias-related crime oppresses and segregates Native Americans. Perry is well aware of the history of colonization in North America and its attendant racial violence. She argues that the legacy of violence today can be traced directly to the genocidal practices of early settlers, and she adds valuable insights into the ways in which ÒIndiansÓ have been constructed as the Other by the prevailing culture. PerryÕs interviews with Native Americans recount instances of appalling treatment, often at the hands of law enforcement officials. In her conclusion, Perry draws from her research and interviews to suggest ways in which Native Americans can be empowered to defend themselves against all forms of racist victimization.

Book excerpt: It’s July Fourth and the citizens of Crescent Falls are ready to celebrate the occasion. The public park has been transformed into festival central with food tents sponsored by local churches, music provided by the high school band, and a carnival midway with games and a dunking machine. Amateur sleuth Adelaide McBride and her fiancé Vernon Dexter are ready to work a shift at the ice cream tent, sponsored by their church. The newly formed Crescent Falls Auxiliary Police Force, made up of volunteers, will be keeping the peace. But when a murder victim is found in the woods adjacent to the park, the celebration comes to an abrupt halt. Chief of Police Daniel McBride already has a missing person’s case on his hands. Reverend James Preston mysteriously disappeared a week ago and all efforts to find him have failed. Now, Daniel is faced with the brutal murder of a woman he recognizes as Felitia Mason, an out-of-town escort. To make matters worse, days later a skeleton is unearthed in the mayor’s back yard and the town librarian is attacked in the same manner as the escort. As Daniel tries to unravel both twisted cases and find justice for the victims, he has no idea the price some of those involved will have to pay.

Book Protecting the Environment During Armed Conflict

Download or read book Protecting the Environment During Armed Conflict written by Elizabeth Mrema and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report inventories and analyses the range of international laws that protect the environment during armed conflict. With a view to identifying the current gaps and weaknesses in this system, the authors examine the relevant provisions within four bodies of international law - environmental humanitarian (IHL), international criminal law (ICL), international environmental law (IEL), and international human rights law (HRL). The report concludes with twelve concrete recommendations on ways to strengthen this legal framework and its enforcement. The Environment and Natural Resources are crucial for building and consolidating peace, it is urgent that their protection in times of armed conflict be strengthened. There can be no durable peace if the natural resources that sustain livelihoods are damaged or destroyed. This report provides a basis upon which Member States can draw upon to clarify, expand and enforce international law on environmental protection in times of war.

  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book The Silent Ones written by William Brodrick and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monk must locate a missing priest accused of sexual abuse in a mystery thriller “by turns shocking, poignant, enlightening and inspired” (Wall Street Journal). Monk-turned-lawyer-turned-novelist William Brodrick has proven with each new installment of his Father Anselm series that he’s the “writer of choice for those who prefer a cerebral challenge with a moral and social message”. In The Silent Ones, Brodrick tackles head-on the modern scourge of the Catholic Church to create an intricate thriller that’s as devastating as it is impactful (Crime Review). Father Anselm is enlisted to trace the missing Father Livermore, an American priest with a troubled past. His disappearance is undoubtedly connected to allegations made against him by the family of eleven-year-old Harry Brandwell, but a mysterious visitor to the Priory urges Father Anselm to find out why Harry is prepared to blame an innocent man. Father Anselm finds himself on the trail of an imposter, unaware that he is being drawn into the shadows of a conspiracy while his reputation is exploited by those closest to him. As he probed deeper, he discovers that behind the victim stand many others who have chosen silence as a way to face their own horrors. Contemporary, disturbing, and elegantly plotted, The Silent Ones is a compelling novel about the anatomy of silence, the courage of victims, and the redemptive power of public justice.

Download or read book Boys Don t Tell written by Randy Ellison and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] fiercely honest memoir . . . [a] difficult story of healing to help others find the strength to tell their own stories and heal themselves.” —National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse American society is in the midst of a crisis, an epidemic of violence, secrets, and shame. The victims reside in every town, on every street. Finding it easier to remain in denial than to confront this reality, the public minimizes the emotional aftermath of sexual abuse of children and provides few programs to help heal those afflicted. Recounting the author’s journey through a minefield based on his own denial, Boys Don’t Tell takes a subjective look back at a life distorted by the effects of child sexual abuse and offers insight as to why victims find it so difficult to “just get over it and move on.” Through the eyes and emotions of the author, it reveals his abuse as a teenager by a trusted minister and mentor, then recounts years of therapy, a formal complaint to the Church, and a lawsuit settled in mediation. Boys Don’t Tell covers the nature of addictions, their impact, and the difficulty and reward in defeating them. Excruciatingly honest, it creates an openness that can facilitate healing in others. Boys Don’t Tell gives voice to an estimated 20 million male survivors, and offers loved ones, professionals, church and organizational leaders the opportunity to understand the impact of child sexual abuse. “Through his public speaking and advocacy work on behalf of survivors in Oregon and across the country, and through his book, Boys Don’t Tell, Randy embodies the transformation of childhood trauma.” —The Good Men Project
