Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, there have been few theoretical inquiries into the relationship between the technological innovation and basic objectives of consumer protection laws. This book addresses this need by considering the impact of technological innovation on the foundations of consumer advocacy, contracting behaviour, control over intellectual capital and information privacy. The collection presents a unique and timely perspective on these issues. The authors, internationally renowned experts, from diverse areas such as consumer issues in technology markets, contract, and intellectual property provide a fresh perspective on these topics. Contributions provide novel approaches to the question of what consumer protection might consist of in the context of technological innovation. The book will be a valuable resource to academics and researchers in law and public policy and is easily accessible to graduate and undergraduate students working in these areas.

Book Consumer Protection in an Age of Technological Transformation

Download or read book Consumer Protection in an Age of Technological Transformation written by Eric S. Marlin and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a time of extraordinary change: technology is transforming interpersonal and business communication, including marketing and advertising to consumers. Products are evolving as a result of innovation. Even the way consumers are paying for goods and services is being revolutionised, as electronic payment systems serve up new and inventive ways to exchange money. Increasingly, people of all ages are using wireless phones and devices for communicating, for information gathering, and for entertainment- in all types of locations. And, as new wireless technologies are introduced, so too are new and expanded ways to get information and be entertained via your wireless phone or device. This book examines ways to adapt consumer protection strategies to ensure that all consumers, including the vulnerable, are equally well served. Applying existing policies and creating new ones is also looked at to address emerging challenges regarding new technologies and products that may be unfamiliar to consumers. This book also discusses how the ever-expanding number of marketing channels in the world-wide marketplace will be monitored for instances of deception of unfairness and finally, the collaboration with law enforcers from around the world will be examined to protect consumers in the global marketplace.

Download or read book Protecting Consumers written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 2002 and 2006 Ofcom, Ofgem and Postcomm removed retail price controls from fixed line telephone provision, gas and electricity supply, and special delivery (next day) for business account users. The controls were designed to protect consumers from unfair pricing from suppliers that had once been monopolies. The controls were removed as it was considered that competition had developed sufficiently to rely on the market and competition law to protect consumers. These markets are worth some £46 billion per year, and telecoms and energy supply services reach almost every household in the UK. This report looks at whether regulators: monitor markets to ensure effective competition is developing; have enabled consumers to take advantage of competition; whether regulators took the right steps when removing retail price controls. The processes used by the regulators were consistent with their statutory duties of protecting consumer interests through the promotion of competition. The conditions for competition have developed in all three markets, and consumers can take advantage of that competition through switching easily between suppliers. Some problems remain. Some consumers, especially those classified as vulnerable, can be unable to take advantage of the competitive market - due to complex tariffs, lack of easily accessible, trustworthy, understandable and comparable information. Former incumbents, previously monopolies, continue to have a strong position in their original markets. All three regulators should continue to use their competition and consumer protection powers to ensure that markets protect the consumer, and that consumers can take further advantage of competition.
