Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and wide-ranging work examines historical perceptions of nature in China and the relationship between insider and outsider, state and village, top-down conservation policy and community autonomy. After an introduction to the history of wildlife conservation and nature reserve management in China, the book places recent tiger conservation efforts in the context of a two-thousand-year gazetteer of tiger attacks--the longest running documentation of human-wildlife encounters for any region in the world. This record offers a unique perspective on the history of the tiger as a dynamic force in the political culture of China. While the tiger has long been identified with political authority, the Chinese pangolin and its earthly magic have exerted a powerful influence in the everyday lives of those working and living in the fields and forests. Today the tiger and the pangolin, government officials and village communities, must work together closely if wildlife habitat conservation programs are to succeed. Extensive fieldwork in the Meihuashan Nature Reserve and other protected areas of western Fujian have led the author to advocate a landscape ecological approach to habitat conservation. By linking economic development to land use practices, he makes a strong case for integrating nature conservation efforts with land tenure and other socio-ecological issues in China and beyond.

Book Tigers of the World

Download or read book Tigers of the World written by Ronald Tilson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tigers of the World, Second Edition explores tiger biology, ecology, conservation, management, and the science and technology that make this possible. In 1988, when the first edition was published, tiger conservation was still in its infancy, and two decades later there has been a revolution not only in what is known, but how information about tigers is obtained and disseminated. In the fast changing world of conservation, there is a great need to summarize the vast and current state-of-the-art, to put this into historical perspective, and to speculate in what yet remains to be done. Tigers of the World, Second Edition fulfills this need by bringing together in a unique way the world’s leading tiger experts into one volume. Despite the challenges ahead, there are bright spots in this story and lessons aplenty not only for tiger specialists but large carnivore specialists, conservation biologists, wildlife managers, natural resource policymakers, and most importantly the caring public. Examines the past twenty years of research from the world’s leading tiger experts on biology, politics, and conservation Describes latest methods used to disseminate and obtain information needed for conservation and care of this species Includes coverage on genetics and ecology, policy, poaching and trade, captive breeding and farming, and the status of Asia’s last wild tigers Excellent resource for grad courses in conservation biology, wildlife management, and veterinary programs New volume continues the classic Noyes Series in Animal Behavior, Ecology, Conservation and Management

Download or read book Riding the Tiger written by John Seidensticker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-08 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauty, grace and power make the tiger one of the world's most loved animals, yet it is precisely these qualities that have been its downfall. Poaching for skins and body parts, loss of habitat and prey and conflicts between people and wild tigers have caused catastrophic declines in tiger numbers throughout their range. If wild tigers are to survive through the next century, we must act now. Riding the Tiger is a comprehensive, scientific and eminently readable account of the problems and possible solutions of securing a future for wild tigers. Lavishly illustrated in full colour, it is written by leading conservationists working throughout Asia. It is a vital information resource for tiger conservationists in the field, necessary reading for serious students of carnivore conservation and conservation biologists in general, and an accessible overview of tiger conservation for general readers.

Book excerpt: A rare look at a magnificent predator. Supple, powerful, long, lean and intense, tigers are one of the world's most beautiful predators. Though fierce and efficient, an estimated 5,000 tigers are all that survive in the wild. Tiger provides a thorough understanding of this remarkable animal based on firsthand observations. Using stunning photography and maps, the book reveals how shrinking habitats and decreasing food supplies are forcing tigers to live in unnaturally high densities, often with deadly results. Tiger draws on the latest research and extensive field experience to deal with every aspect of its behavior: Social structures Breeding patterns and family life Martial arts-like hunting tactics Dietary favorites and oddities Communication and interaction. Two hundred and fifty photographs capture tigers in range of activities: devouring prey in the jungle, at play with cubs, warding off scavengers, at rest and on the prowl. Fascinating commentary offers intriguing new ideas about supporting this critically endangered animal, a first step in ensuring that they never die out.

Book Wildlife Conservation And Management

Download or read book Wildlife Conservation And Management written by Dr. Singray Saleeb Kullu and published by Academic Guru Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding demographics, animal behavior, and the dynamics of ecosystems is necessary for applying modern ideas of sustainable wildlife management and conservation, which include the protection of endangered species. This creates a unified, cohesive work that is geared for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students by weaving together a variety of diverse themes. This provides an introduction to important ecological concepts, such as the values of animals, the study and management of habitats, demography, and the development and control of populations. Thereafter, population dynamics are explored in depth, along with the many forms of animal conservation and their methods. The new quantitative procedures that have been developed over the course of the previous ten years are now considered to be so vital to management that we have incorporated them at the most fundamental levels. In addition, the book has a few chapters that will be helpful to practical wildlife management learners and those working in the area generally. This book discusses contemporary approaches to censure, the use of age and stage-structured data in demography research, and the utilization of models as effective tools for determining appropriate courses of action. It highlights the fact that all issues pertaining to wildlife must be handled within the context of the whole ecosystem, and that these issues cannot be resolved in isolation from other species and ecosystems. This book gives the reader a more comprehensive understanding of the procedures and specifics involved in the protection and management of wildlife.
