Book excerpt: The photo-induced and natural superhydrophilicity of Ti02-derived films deposited using two different sol-gel routes has been studied. Correlations between photocatalytic activity and photo-induced superhydrophilicity allow to conjointly optimize both properties for self cleaning applications. The deposition of a SiOx barrier layer at the Ti02 film/stainless steel interface prevents a detrimental Ti02 film contamination from iron species and yields photohydrophilic properties similar to those of films deposited on silicon wafer. ln addition, Si02-Ti02 granular or planar interface effects yield a natural, persistent, and regenerable superhydrophilicity in Si02-Ti02 composite or bi-Iayer films deposited on silicon and stainless steel. These properties allow envisaging long-term self-cleaning applications in conditions where UV light is not always or not at ail available.
