Book Categorization of Radioactive Sources

Download or read book Categorization of Radioactive Sources written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive sources are widely used in the fields of medicine, industry, agriculture, research and education, as well as having military applications. This guide sets out a risk-based ranking of radioactive sources and practices into five categories, in line with IAEA standards, by which risk informed decisions can be made in a graded approach to the regulatory control of radioactive sources for the purposes of safety and security.

Book Locating and Characterizing Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources in Historical Waste

Download or read book Locating and Characterizing Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources in Historical Waste written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides information and guidance on methodologies and techniques which could be used to locate, identify and characterize disused, sealed radioactive sources on historical waste sites. The sealed and shielded nature of these sources often poses a significant challenge to their characterisation and thus to the verification of historical radioactive waste inventory records. Therefore, to facilitate the safe and proper classification of such sources, this publication describes the advantages and disadvantages of a number of methods of characterization, as well as the situational applicability of each.

Book Radiation Source Use and Replacement

Download or read book Radiation Source Use and Replacement written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-05-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States there are several thousand devices containing high-activity radiation sources licensed for use in areas ranging from medical uses such as cancer therapy to safety uses such as testing of structures and industrial equipment. Those radiation sources are licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and state agencies. Concerns have been raised about the safety and security of the radiation sources, particularly amid fears that they could be used to create dirty bombs, or radiological dispersal device (RDD). In response to a request from Congress, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission asked the National Research Council to conduct a study to review the uses of high-risk radiation sources and the feasibility of replacing them with lower risk alternatives. The study concludes that the U.S. government should consider factors such as potential economic consequences of misuse of the radiation sources into its assessments of risk. Although the committee found that replacements of most sources are possible, it is not economically feasible in some cases. The committee recommends that the U.S. government take steps to in the near term to replace radioactive cesium chloride radiation sources, a potential "dirty bomb" ingredient used in some medical and research equipment, with lower-risk alternatives. The committee further recommends that longer term efforts be undertaken to replace other sources. The book presents a number of options for making those replacements.

Book An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation

Download or read book An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation written by Michael I Ojovan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the authors' extensive experience in the processing and disposal of waste, An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation, Second Edition examines the gamut of nuclear waste issues from the natural level of radionuclides in the environment to geological disposal of waste-forms and their long-term behavior. It covers all-important aspects of processing and immobilization, including nuclear decay, regulations, new technologies and methods. Significant focus is given to the analysis of the various matrices used, especially cement and glass, with further discussion of other matrices such as bitumen. The final chapter concentrates on the performance assessment of immobilizing materials and safety of disposal, providing a full range of the resources needed to understand and correctly immobilize nuclear waste.

Book An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation

Download or read book An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation written by Michael I. Ojovan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety and environmental impact is of uppermost concern when dealing with the movement and storage of nuclear waste. The 20 chapters in 'An Introduction to Nuclear Waste Immobilisation' cover all important aspects of immobilisation, from nuclear decay, to regulations, to new technologies and methods. Significant focus is given to the analysis of the various matrices used in transport: cement, bitumen and glass, with the greatest attention being given to glass. The last chapter concentrates on the performance assessment of each matrix, and on new developments of ceramics and glass composite materials, thermochemical methods and in-situ metal matrix immobilisation. The book thoroughly covers all issues surrounding nuclear waste: from where to locate nuclear waste in the environment, through nuclear waste generation and sources, treatment schemes and technologies, immobilisation technologies and waste forms, disposal and long term behaviour. Particular attention is paid to internationally approved and worldwide-applied approaches and technologies. * Each chapter focuses on a different matrix used in nuclear waste immobilisation: Cement, bitumen, glass and new materials. * Keeps the most important issues surrounding nuclear waste – such as treatment schemes and technologies, and disposal - at the forefront.
