Book excerpt: The coastal zone is the host to many human activities, which have significantly increased in the last decades. However, sea level rise and more frequent storm events severely affect beaches and coastal structures, with negative consequences and dramatic impacts on coastal communities. These aspects add to typical coastal problems, like flooding and beach erosion, which already leading to large economic losses and human fatalities. Modeling is thus fundamental for an exhaustive understanding of the nearshore region in the present and future environment. Innovative tools and technologies may help to better understand coastal processes in terms of hydrodynamics, sediment transport, bed morphology, and their interaction with coastal structures. This book collects several contributions focusing on nearshore dynamics, and span among several time and spatial scales using both physical and numerical approaches. The aim is to describe the most recent advances in coastal dynamics.

Book Design of False Front Pressure Panels for Caisson Retained Island in Beaufort Sea

Download or read book Design of False Front Pressure Panels for Caisson Retained Island in Beaufort Sea written by Fenco Consultants Limited and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dome Petroleum Ltd. is planning to construct the first of their artificial islands in the Beaufort Sea sometime during the late summer or early fall of this year. The proposed island will be located offshore in a water depth of 23m and consists of four self contained caissons placed on a dredged soil berm. The intended use of the island is twofold, namely, to use it as a platform for explorational drilling as well as to employ it as a full scale experimental structure which offers the unique opportunity to measure undistorted ice forces and ice pressures. Data gathered from this structure can then be utilized to establish design criteria for the construction of future islands located in greater water depths. The work outlined in this proposal relates mainly to the experimental nature of this island. So called false front pressure panels which are made out of steel and/or concrete are attached to the front face of the caisson(s) as shown in Figure 1. The configuration of a typical panel consists of a structurally sound plate and beam structure which transmits ice loads via load cells or flat jacks to the caisson. Overall average normal and/or shear loads are measured by the cells or jacks whereas localized stress concentrations are measured by employing sensing devices which are either built into the panel or are directly attached to the panel surface. The panels have to be anchored to the caisson. The anchor points have to be designed with great care in order to ensure that all possible loads are being properly transferred" -- ASTIS [online] database.

Book Islands for Offshore Nuclear Power Stations

Download or read book Islands for Offshore Nuclear Power Stations written by Binnie & Partners and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Working Group "0ffshore Nuclear Power Plants" was established by the Commission of the European Communities in 1971. At that time it appeared that the option offered by creating new sites offshore should be explored. The present development of nuclear power has not, however, reached the stage where offs hore siting can be considered as a near or medium term proposition. The purpose of this report is to summarize the state of the art for the provision of floating or fixed structures, or man-made islands of the size needed for the construction of nuclear and other power stations. It describes the main factors which must be taken into account in the design and location of such islands and provides an indication of feasibility and cost for each design at the present time. It deals mainly with the civil engineering problems and not other major factors, such as the law of the sea, the rights of countries to locate nuclear establishments off their coast, their safety, security, the energy connection with the mainland, the marine ecology, the logistics, etc. ; many of these problems are directly related to the site and have major economic and political implications. By studying application examples the Working Group has occupied itself with these other factors.

Book Feasibility Design Study for Kopanoar Production Island

Download or read book Feasibility Design Study for Kopanoar Production Island written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A production facility is being considered for the extraction of oil from the Kopanoar Field in the Canadian Beaufort Sea where water depths are approximately 60 metres (200 ft). Various types of structures are being contemplated. These include primarily two different types, namely a standard artificial island with berms and caissons, and a gravity structure with berms for ice load protection. A major obstacle to the design of either type of facility is a very soft upper seabed clay stratum approximately 6 metres (20 ft) thick. This feasibility design study addresses primarily the aspects of an artificial island stability related to the foundation soil conditions. The objectives were to obtain a geotechnically sound and economically feasible conceptual design, and to evaluate other possible designs that could be constructed with equipment presently available to Dome Petroleum Ltd. in the Beaufort Sea. These objectives have been met. ... The conclusions of this feasibility study may be summarized as follows: 1. The artificial island would be unstable if founded on 6 m (20 ft) of very soft seabed clays unless it was constructed slowly over a period of many years. 2. Vertical drains used below the entire island to reduce consolidation time would be uneconomical for this project. In addition, an extended construction period would be required to allow time for sufficient strength gain in the very soft seabed clays. 3. Partial removal of the very soft seabed clays would also necessitate an extended construction period. 4. Key soils and field testing data are required to quantitatively assess the potential benefits of dynamic consolidation on stability. 5. Fill displacement methods of construction may result in sand intrusions within the very soft seabed soils or displacement of these soils. Field test data are required to evaluate this construction procedure. 6. The optimum design would involve removal of the very soft seabed clays from approximately berm crest to berm crest, beneath the island core. Additional soils data are required to determine the precise extent of removal. 7. The potential for berm toe instability is not believed to be a serious impediment to the feasibility of the artificial island, but needs further investigation. 8. The findings reported herein are based on the limited soil data currently available in the region of the proposed Kopanoar Island. When a precise location has been selected and site-specific geotechnical testing carried out, it may be possible to optimize the design of the island. The present study is based on a realistic interpretation of the regional conditions, but because of the limited data currently available it is necessarily conservative"--Executive summary.
