Book Proposal to Study Neutrino Interactions in the 30 M 3 NAL Bubble Chamber with Muon Identifier

Download or read book Proposal to Study Neutrino Interactions in the 30 M 3 NAL Bubble Chamber with Muon Identifier written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose to study high-energy neutrino intersections in the NAL 30 m3 bubble chamber. A slight alteration of the chamber design will allow a large-solid-angle quantameter to be placed just outside the thin (1/2 inch steel) wall of the bubble chamber. A detector, designed to identify the muon of the interaction is placed outside the vacuum tank. With this hybrid system they can reconstruct the neutrino's energy, the lepton momentum transfer squared, Q2, the lepton energy transfer and measure many features of the final hadron state. This system detects with high efficiency over the entire range of variables and is well suited to making a detailed general survey of neutrino interactions in the neutrino energy range 15 to 80 GeV. A million-picture exposure would yield tens of thousands of neutrino interactions with circulating protons at 200 GeV. A similar number of events should be obtained with protons at 500 GeV.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose an investigation of neutrino interactions in the deuterium filled 15-foot bubble chamber at NAL. A 250,000 picture run with 200 GeV protons should yield very interesting physics even with a 'bare' deuterium chamber. This addendum extends the physics discussion in the original proposal to the search for charm particles, and the study of neutral currents. A (?{sub {mu}}, d) bubble chamber exposure with E{sub P} = 200-300 GeV is the most promising experiment that can be done to search for the type of charm particles that are essential to Gauge theories of weak and electromagnetic interactions. This addendum updates and summarizes Proposal 151. We propose a 300,000 picture run of the 15-foot bubble chamber filled with deuterium exposed to a wide band, 2 horn, neutrino beam from protons of energy E{sub p} ≥ 300 GeV. The analysis will be based primarily on the bare bubble chamber data but will also use the EMI wherever useful. The physics purposes of the experiment include: (1) Extensive search for charmed baryons and mesons; Determination of the ratio of the total charged current cross sections?(?, n)/?(?,0); (3) Determination of d2?{sup C.C.}/dxdy for (?, n) and (?, p) interactions separately; (4) Study of (?, n) and (?, p) neutral current interactions; and (5) Physics of Special Channels in charged current and neutral current events.

Book 15 Ft Bubble Chamber Neutrino Physics

Download or read book 15 Ft Bubble Chamber Neutrino Physics written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary results from 15' bubble chamber neutrino experiment on hydrogen are presented, showing that the chamber parameters are being understood reasonably well. Raw multiplicity distributions are given for several neutrino energies. Among 274 events, approximately 1/3 have either gammas and/or vees, and about 1/4 of these are vees. The average detection efficiency for external muon identifier plus chamber for neutral currents is about 75%.

Book Search for Heavy Leptons and Hard Penetrating Radiation in the Neutrino Beam Study of Diffraction Scattering of Neutrinos Study of Deep Inelastic Vu Scattering in a Ne Bubble Chamber at NAL and Test of the Delta S

Download or read book Search for Heavy Leptons and Hard Penetrating Radiation in the Neutrino Beam Study of Diffraction Scattering of Neutrinos Study of Deep Inelastic Vu Scattering in a Ne Bubble Chamber at NAL and Test of the Delta S written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose here an experiment designed to search for the existence of heavy leptons ([lambda]) produced in the collisions of 400 GeV/c protons with matter in the beam dump. These charged leptons, which are assumed to decay by weak interaction will be detected by the interactions of their neutrinos ([upsilon]{sub [lambda]}, {bar [upsilon]}{sub {lambda}}) in a Ne bubble chamber. For leptons with masses of greater than 1 GeV, the {lambda} life time is expected to be too short for the lepton to be observed visually, therefore, the lepton must be identified by a detailed comparison with ordinary [upsilon]{sub {mu}} interactions. We request 200,000 pictures with the beam protons hitting the shield directly and 200,000 pictures with the normal high energy [upsilon]{sub {mu}} beam. In the latter pictures we will study deep inelastic [upsilon]{sub {mu}} scattering, search for muonless [upsilon]{sub {mu}} interactions, search for {upsilon}{sub {mu}} diffractive processes and search for [Delta]S = -[Delta]Q in strange particle production processes. This experiment does not require the E[Pi] or a plate in the bubble chamber although the latter would be very useful and can run without the horn.

Book excerpt: This second open access volume of the handbook series deals with detectors, large experimental facilities and data handling, both for accelerator and non-accelerator based experiments. It also covers applications in medicine and life sciences. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Book PROPOSAL FOR AN EXPERIMENT PROGRAM IN NEUTRINO PHYSICS AND PROTON DECAY IN THE HOMESTAKE LABORATORY

Download or read book PROPOSAL FOR AN EXPERIMENT PROGRAM IN NEUTRINO PHYSICS AND PROTON DECAY IN THE HOMESTAKE LABORATORY written by S. WHITE and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is intended to describe first, the principal physics reasons for an ambitious experimental program in neutrino physics and proton decay based on construction of a series of massive water Cherenkov detectors located deep underground (4850 ft) in the Homestake Mine of the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA); and second, the engineering design of the underground chambers to house the Cherenkov detector modules; and third, the conceptual design of the water Cherenkov detectors themselves for this purpose. In this proposal we show the event rates and physics sensitivity for beams from both FNAL (1300 km distant from Homestake) and BNL (2540 km distant from Homestake). The program we propose will benefit with a beam from FNAL because of the high intensities currently available from the Main Injector with modest upgrades. The possibility of tuning the primary proton energy over a large range from 30 to 120 GeV also adds considerable flexibility to the program from FNAL. On the other hand the beam from BNL over the larger distance will produce very large matter effects, and consequently a hint of new physics (beyond CP violation) can be better tested with that configuration. In this proposal we focus on the CP violation physics. Included in this document are preliminary costs and time-to-completion estimates which have been exposed to acknowledged experts in their respective areas. This presentation is not, however, to be taken as a technical design report with the extensive documentation and contingency costs that a TDR usually entails. Nevertheless, some contingency factors have been included in the estimates given here. The essential ideas expressed here were first laid out in a letter of intent to the interim director of the Homestake Laboratory on July 26, 2001. Since that time, the prospect of a laboratory in the Homestake Mine has been realized, and the design of a long baseline neutrino experiment has been refined. The extrapolation contained in this proposal is within the common domain of thinking in the area of physics discussed here. It needs now only the encouragement of the funding agencies, NSF and DOE.

Book Proposal to Perform a High Statistics Neutrino Scattering Experiment Using a Fine Grained Detector in the NuMI Beam

Download or read book Proposal to Perform a High Statistics Neutrino Scattering Experiment Using a Fine Grained Detector in the NuMI Beam written by J. G. Morfin and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NuMI facility at Fermilab will provide an extremely intense beam of neutrinos for the MINOS neutrino-oscillation experiment. The spacious and fully-outfitted MINOS near detector hall will be the ideal venue for a high-statistics, high-resolution {nu} and {bar {nu}}-nucleon/nucleus scattering experiment. The experiment described here will measure neutrino cross-sections and probe nuclear effects essential to present and future neutrino-oscillation experiments. Moreover, with the high NuMI beam intensity, the experiment will either initially address or significantly improve our knowledge of a wide variety of neutrino physics topics of interest and importance to the elementary-particle and nuclear-physics communities.
