Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activating the Past explores critical historical events and transformations associated with embodied memories in the Black Atlantic world. The assembled case-studies disclose hidden historical references to local and regional encounters with Atlantic modernity, focusing on religious festivals that represent political and economic relationships in “fetishized” forms of power and value. Although memories of the slave trade are rarely acknowledged in West Africa and the Americas, they have retreated, so to speak, within ritual associations as restricted, repressed, even secret histories that are activated during public festivals and through different styles of spirit possession. In West Africa, our focus on selected port cities along the coast extends into the hinterlands, where slave raiding occurred but is poorly documented and rarely acknowledged. In the Caribbean, regional contrasts between coastal and hinterland communities relate figures of the jíbaro, the indio and the caboclo to their ritual representations in Santería, Vodou, and Candomblé. Highlighting the spatial association of memories with shrines and the ritual “condensation” of regional geographies, we locate local spirits and domestic terrains within co-extensive Atlantic horizons. The volume brings together leading scholars of the African Diaspora who not only explore these ritual archives for significant echoes of the past, but also illuminate a subaltern historiography embedded within Atlantic cultural systems.

In this clear and useful reference guide, Bjorling presents a listing of the literature on the various ways in which people of different cultures have consulted spirits—through shamans and oracles, magic, mediums, Voodoo, and psychics. Each chapter contains a general introduction to the respective topic as well as a listing of pertinent books, articles, and dissertations. Book Prophecies Visions Occurrences and Dreams

Download or read book Prophecies Visions Occurrences and Dreams written by Raymond Aguilera and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-01-11 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophecies, Visions, Occurrences, and Dreams is an apocalyptic book. Since 1990, Raymond Aguilera began to receive prophecies, visions, and warnings form God about the end of our world as we know it. These messages range from abortion, to the New Age movement, to Pastors who have missed the flock. They reveal things to come, things that now are, and things that should not be… From hope, to love, to doom, to a new beginning, herein lies a broad range of insight from a whole new perspective. The prophecies are simple and straight forward, written from a first-hand perspective. They fly in the face of orthodox tradition and are a thorn in the side to everyone who has already made up his mind and heart on how the end is to come and who God is. This has the potential of being one of the most controversial books of the year.

Men and women could receive and communicate by the Spirit of God; two ways this is done is through dreams and visions. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be human? Most of us have asked this question at one time or another. At least we have considered this question from the standpoint of our own life-What is the most basic part of me? We don't have to be philosophers or "deep thinkers" to ask these questions. It is normal and natural for us to wonder about the fundamental nature of our being. In The Spiritual You, Bill Landon continues his examination of what our life in this world is truly all about. In his earlier books (My Father and Your Father and The Life that is Real Life) Bill has looked at our relationship with God and the Lord's wishes for us as part of His creation. In The Spiritual You, Bill brings this search to the level of the individual person. What is our real, basic nature? If we are to ever come to a place of harmony with ourselves, each other, our environment and world, we must understand this basic nature. This understanding, as Bill sees it, is not found in the world of formal education, politics or even organized religion. To understand our true nature we must seek for this knowledge from God. This understanding is integral to our finding the place we were meant to hold in God's creation. It is the author's hope that this book will be help and an encouragement to anyone seeking to find the real spiritual you.

Glynis Amy Allen has met quite a few of their spirits, while walking the battlefields of World War I, during her nursing career and when giving personal readings as a medium. This book is a tribute to them. Inspired by her experiences, Glynis has researched others’ similar spiritual and ghostly accounts throughout history and across other cultures.
