Information varies by year, but the curious researcher will find much of interest here. Included are the names of the taxpayers, their taxable male cohabitants, their slaves' names, number of their slaves, horses and cattle along with other taxable items like riding carriages and acres of land. Features a 160 page index of every name, allowing the researcher to quickly assemble the information needed in successive years for genealogical, historical, sociological or demographic analysis.

Book African American Genealogical Sourcebook

Download or read book African American Genealogical Sourcebook written by Paula Kay Byers and published by Gale Cengage. This book was released on 1995 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gale has launched another new project--Genealogical Sourcebook series--and the first volumes look promising. The remaining volumes on Asian Americans and Native Americans will be published this summer. Libraries can order all four volumes for $239 (0-8103-8541-4). Part 1 of each volume consists of informative essays on immigration and migration, basic genealogical methods and resources, and problems specific to ethnic genealogy--such as naming practices, the reuse of graves where families could not afford perpetual sites, and reasons for deliberate falsification of records. Explanations and tips on accessing records specific to these groups, such as those of the Freedmen's Bureau and the Inquisition, records of religious orders, and an overview of newspaper ads and Hispanic heraldry are instructive and pragmatic. Tables, examples, and an extensive bibliography are included. Part 2, 'Directory of Genealogical Information, ' lists libraries and archives, public and private organizations, print resources, and other media that 'hold materials relevant to genealogists whether their focus is on genealogy in general or on a specific ethnic group.' Libraries and archives are listed geographically; those outside the U.S. are in Canada for African Americans, and in Guatemala, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Cuba, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Canada for Hispanic Americans. There are surprisingly few listings for Florida, which has a substantial Hispanic population. Private and public organizations include commercial ventures (publishers, researchers for a fee, bookstores) and nonprofits (genealogical societies, the American Antiquarian Society, etc.). The section entitled 'Print Resources' lists many sources from the 1980s, but there are also current publications. The author and title-organization indexes access only the products and sources listed in part 2. The subject index accesses the essays in part 1. Libraries that hold books such as George R. Ryskamp's Tracing Your Hispanic Heritage (1984) will want to keep them for their scholarly thoroughness. They will want to add these new books for their relative currency and for their simpler explanations of complicated facets of black and Hispanic culture.--BL 05/15/1995.

This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one played a more important role in the settlement of Clark County than Capt. William "Billy" Bush. Born in Orange County, Virginia, Billy came out with Daniel Boone in 1775, resided for a time at Fort Boonesborough, then spent the rest of his life living a few miles from the fort. He thus became one of the first permanent settlers in Kentucky. Billy was also a key figure in establishing Providence Baptist Church, the first church in Clark County. Their place of worship-the Old Stone Church-is now the oldest church on Kentucky soil. Billy Bush laid claim to thousands of acres of land between Winchester and the Kentucky River, and Daniel Boone ran the surveys for him. This land became the foundation of the Bush Settlement.

Book Clarke County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists 1836 1870

Download or read book Clarke County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists 1836 1870 written by Marty Hiatt and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal property taxes have been assessed and collected in Virginia almost annually since 1782. Names of free adult men and single women who owned taxable items were collected by a commissioner of revenue or his deputies. The poll tax (on heads of adult men) was used to support county needs. Taxes on slaves, horses, carriages, clocks and other items were sent to the state. The taxable age for white males varied from sixteen to twenty-one years, depending on the time frame. When a name appears on a Clarke County tax list, you can be fairly certain that person was the head of a household. This book presents abstracts of information found on the original lists. The heads of households, slaves, and horses are indicated. Some years have names of men who were merchants and free Negroes who owned property. 2015, 51/2x81/2, paper, alphabetical, index, 204 pp.

Book Essex County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists 1782 1807

Download or read book Essex County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists 1782 1807 written by Wesley E. Pippenger and published by . This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a reproduction of the personal property tax lists for Essex County, Virginia for the years 1782 through 1807. The earliest list in Essex contains the name of the proprietor (personal paying the tax) and the names of the taxable Negroes. By 1783, the details are expanded to include a tabulation for white tithes, black tithes (and total number of slaves), neat cattle, horses, wheels and ordinary licenses. There are lists for eight different districts in Essex County for 1782, five districts for 1783 (with multiple versions for some), eight for 1784, six for 1785, and four for 1786. The districts are numbered, generally, from south to north in the county; with the first being the bottom of the county, and the eighth being the top part of the county. Starting in 1787, a single list covered the entire county, and this continued through 1807. For genealogical researchers, tax records may help distinguish between individuals by the same name living in a locality at the same time. Some references, notations and evidence of estate divisions may be found here when not readily located in other court records. Plus, the tax record for 1790 and 1800 serves as a replacement for lost Federal census records. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.
