Book Propagation of Plane Waves of Finite Amplitude in Inhomogeneous Media with Applications to Vertical Propagation in the Ocean

Download or read book Propagation of Plane Waves of Finite Amplitude in Inhomogeneous Media with Applications to Vertical Propagation in the Ocean written by Thomas W. Carlton and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the report the authors developed an approximate theory of propagation of plane progressive waves of finite amplitude in a medium with density, sound speed, and parameter of nonlinearity (B/A) varying along the path of propagation. It was found that this variation has two effects upon the wave. The first is a change in amplitude due to the variation in the impedance of the medium. The second is a change in the distance scale over which nonlinear effects develop. Once these two effects are accounted for, then this theory reduces in form to the theory of propagation in a homogeneous fluid, which theory is well developed.

Book Plane Wave Propagation Problems in Electrically Anisotropic and Inhomogeneous Media with Geophysical Applications

Download or read book Plane Wave Propagation Problems in Electrically Anisotropic and Inhomogeneous Media with Geophysical Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary value problems required for modelling plane wave propagation in electrically anisotropic and inhomogeneous media relevant to the surface impedance methods in electromagnetic geophysics are formally posed and treated. For a homogeneous TM-type wave propagating in a half space with both vertical and horizontal inhomogeneities where the TM-type wave is aligned with one of the elements of the conductivity tensor, it is shown using exact solutions that the shearing term in the homogeneous Helmholtz equation for inclined anisotropic media: [Equation 1], unequivocally vanishes and solutions need only be sought to the homogeneous Helmholtz equation for biaxial media: [Equation 2]. -- This implies that those problems posed with an inclined uniaxial conductivity tensor can be identically stated with a fundamental biaxial conductivity tensor, provided that the conductivity values are the reciprocal of the diagonal terms from the Euler rotated resistivity tensor: [Equation 3], [Equation 4], [Equation 5]. -- The applications of this consequence for numerical methods of solving arbitrary two-dimensional problems for a homogeneous TM-type wave is that they need only to approximate the homogeneous Helmholtz equation and neglect the corresponding shearing term. The self-consistent impedance method, a two-dimensional finite-difference approximation based on a network analogy, is demonstrated to accurately solve for problems with inclined uniaxial anisotropy using the fundamental biaxial anisotropy equivalence. -- The problem of a homogeneous plane wave at skew incidence upon an inclined anisotropic half space is then formally treated. In the half space, both TM- and TE-type waves are coupled and the linearly polarised incident TM- and TE-type waves reflect TE- and TM-type components. Equations for all elements of the impedance tensor are derived for both TM- and TE-type incidence. This offers potential as a method of predicting the direction of anisotropic strike from tensor impedance measurements in sedimentary environments.

Book Wave Propagation in Complex Media

Download or read book Wave Propagation in Complex Media written by George Papanicolaou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications WAVE PROPAGATION IN COMPLEX MEDIA is based on the proceedings of two workshops: • Wavelets, multigrid and other fast algorithms (multipole, FFT) and their use in wave propagation and • Waves in random and other complex media. Both workshops were integral parts of the 1994-1995 IMA program on "Waves and Scattering." We would like to thank Gregory Beylkin, Robert Burridge, Ingrid Daubechies, Leonid Pastur, and George Papanicolaou for their excellent work as organizers of these meetings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foun dation (NSF), the Army Research Office (ARO, and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), whose financial support made these workshops possible. A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE During the last few years the numerical techniques for the solution of elliptic problems, in potential theory for example, have been drastically improved. Several so-called fast methods have been developed which re duce the required computing time many orders of magnitude over that of classical algorithms. The new methods include multigrid, fast Fourier transforms, multi pole methods and wavelet techniques. Wavelets have re cently been developed into a very useful tool in signal processing, the solu tion of integral equation, etc. Wavelet techniques should be quite useful in many wave propagation problems, especially in inhomogeneous and nonlin ear media where special features of the solution such as singularities might be tracked efficiently.

Download or read book Waves in Layered Media written by L Brekhovskikh and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waves in Layered Media discusses different theories about the relationship between waves and media. The book specifically covers several factors that can affect the behavior and formation of various kinds of waves in different types of media. Comprised of nine chapters, the book establishes the fundamentals by first tackling simplest concepts, such as the behavior plane wave and discretely layered media. The succeeding chapters cover much more complex ideas, such as the refraction and reflection of waves, spherical wave, and wave in inhomogeneous media. The book will be a great asset to researchers whose work involves acoustics, or to professionals whose line of work involves sound waves.

Book Radio Wave Propagation in the Marine Boundary Layer

Download or read book Radio Wave Propagation in the Marine Boundary Layer written by Alexander Kukushkin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his many years of professional experience at leading companies in communications technology, the author describes an analytical solution for wave propagation over the sea surface in an atmospheric boundary layer. His approach allows the detailed analysis of combined effects of diffraction, refraction and scattering in random media. While specific applications covered are targeted at radio wave propagation over the sea surface, a similar approach is applicable to many problems in underwater acoustics, seismology, solid matter physics and astrophysics.

Book Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media

Download or read book Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media written by Akira Ishimaru and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media, Volume 1: Single Scattering and Transport Theory presents the fundamental formulations of wave propagation and scattering in random media in a unified and systematic manner, as well as useful approximation techniques applicable to a variety of different situations. The emphasis is on single scattering theory and transport theory. The reader is introduced to the fundamental concepts and useful results of the statistical wave propagation theory. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters, organized around three themes: waves in random scatterers, waves in random continua, and rough surface scattering. The first part deals with the scattering and propagation of waves in a tenuous distribution of scatterers, using the single scattering theory and its slight extension to explain the fundamentals of wave fluctuations in random media without undue mathematical complexities. Many practical problems of wave propagation and scattering in the atmosphere, oceans, and other random media are discussed. The second part examines transport theory, also known as the theory of radiative transfer, and includes chapters on wave propagation in random particles, isotropic scattering, and the plane-parallel problem. This monograph is intended for engineers and scientists interested in optical, acoustic, and microwave propagation and scattering in atmospheres, oceans, and biological media.

Book Research in High Intensity Sound

Download or read book Research in High Intensity Sound written by David T. Blackstock and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1 November 1970 to 31 October 1975 basic research in nonlinear acoustics was carried out. The research, which was both theoretical and experimental, may be separated into three major areas. In one area N waves from electric sparks were used to study propagation, focusing, and diffraction of high intensity transient waves. Research was conducted on periodic finite-amplitude waves in a second area. In particular the author studied propagation in tubes, horns, and open media; propagation in inhomogeneous media; acoustic saturation; directional characteristics of beams; and suppression of sound by sound. Finally research was done on the propagation of finite-amplitude noise, both in tubes and in open media.

Book Propagation of Plane Compressional Waves of Finite Amplitude in Real Fluids a Theoretical Approach by the Method of Implicit Functions

Download or read book Propagation of Plane Compressional Waves of Finite Amplitude in Real Fluids a Theoretical Approach by the Method of Implicit Functions written by Yen Fu Bow and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory is formulated describing the distortion of a plane, initially sinusoidal, compressional wave (or sound wave) of finite amplitude traveling through a real (nonlinear and dissipative) fluid medium which is initially undisturbed. The development of the theory consists of two steps. The first step is to find a closed-form approximate solution (expressed as an implicit functional relation) to the onedimensional hydrodynamical equations and the equation of the medium, and the second step is to improve this approximate solution by using certain physical insights. From the existence theorem of implicit functions a single condition is obtained from which the general behavior of sound propagation in a dissipative medium can be easily understood. The approximate solution found in the first step is in fairly good agreement with the experimental results and is compatible with previous theories. (Author).
