Book Propagation of Multidimensional Nonlinear Waves and Kinematical Conservation Laws

Download or read book Propagation of Multidimensional Nonlinear Waves and Kinematical Conservation Laws written by Phoolan Prasad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book formulates the kinematical conservation laws (KCL), analyses them and presents their applications to various problems in physics. Finally, it addresses one of the most challenging problems in fluid dynamics: finding successive positions of a curved shock front. The topics discussed are the outcome of collaborative work that was carried out mainly at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India. The theory presented in the book is supported by referring to extensive numerical results. The book is organised into ten chapters. Chapters 1–4 offer a summary of and briefly discuss the theory of hyperbolic partial differential equations and conservation laws. Formulation of equations of a weakly nonlinear wavefront and those of a shock front are briefly explained in Chapter 5, while Chapter 6 addresses KCL theory in space of arbitrary dimensions. The remaining chapters examine various analyses and applications of KCL equations ending in the ultimate goal-propagation of a three-dimensional curved shock front and formation, propagation and interaction of kink lines on it.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern Formation in the Natural Environment

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern Formation in the Natural Environment written by A. Van Harten and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Note aims to provide an insight into recent developments in the theory of pattern formation. In the last decade there has been considerable progress in this field, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. Recent mathematical developments concern the study of the nonlinear stability of systems at near-critical conditions by an appropriate system of modulation equations. The complexity of the original problem can be reduced drastically by this approximation. Moreover, it provides unifying point of view for a wide range of problems. New applications of the theory arise in a multitude of scientific areas such as hydrodynamics, reaction-diffusion problems, oceanography, meteorology, combustion, geophysical and biological morphodynamics and semi-conductors.This book is intended to show the interactions between the mathematical theory of nonlinear dynamics and the study of pattern generating phenomena in the natural environment. There is an intimate relationship between new insights in the mathematical aspects of nonlinear pattern formation and the comprehension of such phenomena. Therefore there are two partly overlapping main themes: one in which the emphasis is on generally applicable mathematical theories and techniques and one in which the phenomenology of pattern evolution in various areas is discussed. The book comprises 19 contributions by experts in the field. Although the emphasis changes considerably from paper to paper, in each contribution the same two themes are present; all the authors have aimed to achieve a suitable balance between the mathematical theory and the physical phenomena.

Book Dynamics of Nonlinear Waves in Dissipative Systems Reduction Bifurcation and Stability

Download or read book Dynamics of Nonlinear Waves in Dissipative Systems Reduction Bifurcation and Stability written by G Dangelmayr and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical description of complex spatiotemporal behaviour observed in dissipative continuous systems is a major challenge for modern research in applied mathematics. While the behaviour of low-dimensional systems, governed by the dynamics of a finite number of modes is well understood, systems with large or unbounded spatial domains show intrinsic infinite-dimensional behaviour --not a priori accessible to the methods of finite dimensionaldynamical systems. The purpose of the four contributions in this book is to present some recent and active lines of research in evolution equations posed in large or unbounded domains. One of the most prominent features of these systems is the propagation of various types of patterns in the form of waves, such as travelling and standing waves and pulses and fronts. Different approaches to studying these kinds of phenomena are discussed in the book. A major theme is the reduction of an original evolution equation in the form of a partial differential equation system to a simpler system of equations, either a system of ordinary differential equation or a canonical system of PDEs. The study of the reduced equations provides insight into the bifurcations from simple to more complicated solutions and their stabilities. .

Book IUTAM Symposium Transsonicum IV

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium Transsonicum IV written by H. Sobieczky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Symposium Transsonicum" was founded by Klaus Oswatitsch four decades ago when there was clearly a need for a systematic treatment of flow problems in the higher speed regime in aeronautics. The first conference in 1962 brought together scientists concerned with fundamental problems involving the sonic flow speed regime. Results of the conference provided an understanding of some basic tran sonic phenomena by proposing mathematical methods that allowed for the de velopment of practical calculations. The "Transonic Controversy" (about shock free flows) was still an open issue after this meeting. In 1975 the second symposium was held, by then there was much understanding in how to avoid shocks in a steady plane flow to be designed, but still very little was known in unsteady phenomena due to a lack of elucidating experiments. A third meeting in 1988 reflected the availability oflarger computers which allowed the numerical analysis of flows with shocks to a reasonable accuracy. Because we are trying to keep Oswatitsch's heritage in science alive especially in Gottingen, we were asked by the aerospace research community to organize another symposium. Much had been achieved already in the knowledge, techno logy and applications in transonics, so IUT AM had to be convinced that a fourth meeting would not just be a reunion of old friends reminiscing some scientific past. The scientific committee greatly supported my efforts to invite scientists ac tively working in transonic problems which still pose substantial difficulties to ae rospace and turbomachinery industry.

Book Semigroups of Operators and Spectral Theory

Download or read book Semigroups of Operators and Spectral Theory written by S Kantorovitz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-06-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some aspects of the theory of semigroups of operators, mostly from the point of view of its interaction withspectral theory. In order to make it self-contained, a concise description of the basic theory of semigroups, with complete proofs, is included in Part I. Some of the author's recent results, such as the construction of the Hille-Yosida space for general operators, the semi-simplicity manifold, and a Taylor formula for semigroups as functions of their generator, are also included in Part I. Part II describes recent generalizations (most of them in bookform for the first time), including pre-semigroups, semi-simplicity manifolds in situations more general than that considered in Part I, semigroups of unbounded symmetric operators, and an analogous result on "local cosine families" and semi-analytic vectors. It is hoped that this book will inspire more research in this field. This book will be of particular interest to graduate students and researchers working operator theory and its applications.

Pileckas surveys recent results regarding the solvability of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes system in domains with outlets at infinity. K.R. Rajagopal presents an introduction to a continuum approach to mixture theory with the emphasis on the constitutive equation, boundary conditions and moving singular surface. Finally, Kaiser and von Wahl bring new results on stability of basic flow for the Taylor-Couette problem in the small-gap limit. This volume would be indicated for those in the fields of applied mathematicians, researchers in fluid mechanics and theoretical mechanics, and mechanical engineers.
