Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has made progress in several areas toward fulfilling its commitment to promote energy efficiency in HUD's inventory of public and assisted housing, as well as in housing financed through its formula and competitive grant programs. In its August 2006 report, Promoting Energy Efficiency at HUD at a Time of Change, HUD identified 25 key actions to accomplish its objectives. The underlying goals of HUD's Energy Action Plan, first announced in the 2006 report, were to provide information, incentives, and technical assistance to HUD consumers, partners, and other housing providers to assist in the development or design of new housing and in the management, maintenance, or operation of existing stock. This progress report, which is being submitted to Congress pursuant to Section 154 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, describes the actions undertaken by the Department -- both program and field offices -- to address energy use and consumption in some 5 million housing units nationwide. A Departmentwide Energy Task Force consisting of representatives from HUD program offices, as well as Regional Energy Coordinators in each of HUD's 10 regional offices have coordinated implementation of the Energy Action Plan.

Book Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Green Building Design in Section 202 and Section 811 Programs

Download or read book Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Green Building Design in Section 202 and Section 811 Programs written by Kimberly Gugino Wollos and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) FY 2010-2015 Strategic Plan calls for an overall reduction in energy costs through improved design and operation of HUD-supported projects. Energy conservation and green building techniques are becoming mainstream practice for market-rate projects, and many sponsors and owners of HUD-subsidized housing have already started following suit, both in maintaining and upgrading existing units and in constructing new units. To ensure that this momentum continues in its Section 202 and Section 811 portfolio, HUD moved in fiscal year 2010 to require energy efficiency and water conservation measures and to encourage the use of green building design and features in new Section 202 and Section 811 projects. This Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Green Building Design in Section 202 and Section 811 Programs report was developed as the result of an Interagency Agreement between HUD and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with the help of stakeholders who participated in roundtable discussions with HUD and EPA. It was developed to aid sponsors and owners in working with HUD to advance these goals and, specifically, to assist in responding to the new requirements and incentives.

Book The Greening of America s Building Codes

Download or read book The Greening of America s Building Codes written by Aleksandra Jaeschke and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental disasters and severe weather due to climate change, both triggered by human actions, have had an increasingly direct impact on our homes. But the way in which America builds its homes is part of the problem. This deeply researched history of sustainable design standards in building codes explores how public policy, standard-setting trade associations, and financial incentives influence the ways in which the construction of our homes impacts the environment. The Greening of America's Building Codes investigates the regulations and economic incentives meant to control the environmental impact of contemporary construction practices as it analyzes the history of residential building codes. The book exposes how the socioeconomic and political forces that influenced early building code development continue to define the character of current building codes and, by extension, determine how we regulate environmental impact and define sustainability today. More relevant than ever, The Greening of America's Building Codes is a valuable tool for architects, architecture students, builders, real estate developers, and homeowners who want to understand how public policy and their own day-to-day decisions impact the environment.
