Book Transgression and the Aesthetics of Evil

Download or read book Transgression and the Aesthetics of Evil written by Taran Kang and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we perceive evil? How do we represent evil? In Transgression and the Aesthetics of Evil, Taran Kang examines the entanglements of aesthetics and morality. Investigating conceptions and images of evil, Kang identifies a fateful moment of transformation in the eighteenth century that continues to reverberate to the present day. Transgression, once allocated the central place in the constitution of evil, undergoes a startling revaluation in the Enlightenment and its aftermath, one that needs to be understood in relation to emergent ideas in the arts. Taran Kang engages with the writings of Edmund Burke, the Marquis de Sade, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Hannah Arendt, among others, as he questions recent calls to "de-aestheticize" evil and insists on a historically informed appreciation of evil’s aesthetic dimensions. Chapters consider the figure of the "evil genius," the paradoxical appeal of the grotesque and the disgusting, and the moral status of spectators who behold scenes of suffering and acts of transgression. In grappling with these issues, Transgression and the Aesthetics of Evil questions the feasibility and desirability of insulating the moral from the aesthetic.

Book The Play of Space

  • Author : Rush Rehm

Download or read book The Play of Space written by Rush Rehm and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is "space" a thing, a container, an abstraction, a metaphor, or a social construct? This much is certain: space is part and parcel of the theater, of what it is and how it works. In The Play of Space, noted classicist-director Rush Rehm offers a strikingly original approach to the spatial parameters of Greek tragedy as performed in the open-air theater of Dionysus. Emphasizing the interplay between natural place and fictional setting, between the world visible to the audience and that evoked by individual tragedies, Rehm argues for an ecology of the ancient theater, one that "nests" fifth-century theatrical space within other significant social, political, and religious spaces of Athens. Drawing on the work of James J. Gibson, Kurt Lewin, and Michel Foucault, Rehm crosses a range of disciplines--classics, theater studies, cognitive psychology, archaeology and architectural history, cultural studies, and performance theory--to analyze the phenomenology of space and its transformations in the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. His discussion of Athenian theatrical and spatial practice challenges the contemporary view that space represents a "text" to be read, or constitutes a site of structural dualities (e.g., outside-inside, public-private, nature-culture). Chapters on specific tragedies explore the spatial dynamics of homecoming ("space for returns"); the opposed constraints of exile ("eremetic space" devoid of normal community); the power of bodies in extremis to transform their theatrical environment ("space and the body"); the portrayal of characters on the margin ("space and the other"); and the tragic interactions of space and temporality ("space, time, and memory"). An appendix surveys pre-Socratic thought on space and motion, related ideas of Plato and Aristotle, and, as pertinent, later views on space developed by Newton, Leibniz, Descartes, Kant, and Einstein. Eloquently written and with Greek texts deftly translated, this book yields rich new insights into our oldest surviving drama.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a live-action virtual reality arcade in the middle of a Long Island wasteland, six people are about to be thrown into the game of their lives. And a hundred thousand undead are waiting for their first meal in a decade. Self-taught master hacker Jessie Daniels has always marched to the beat of a different drummer. She's had to, being the daughter of the man who created the often vilified Reanimation technology. While the government has made the invention nearly indispensable to millions of living citizens, powerful ArcTech has turned it into a lucrative entertainment empire. Jessie secretly dreams of tearing it all down. And when one member of her small, close circle of friends jokingly proposes physically breaking onto the island, she might just get her chance. But while she and the others soon discover that breaking in is easy, getting back out is a whole different matter. In fact, it's a hell of a killer. Hounded by mysterious villains who won't hesitate to kill, the game quickly turns into a fight to survive, and death becomes just a different way of leveling up. No longer is the ultimate goal escaping with their skin intact. Not it's defeating them and finding the secret to a potential cure. And the one person who holds it may also know the truth behind her father's puzzling murder year's before. Is Jessie willing to sacrifice everything to learn it? *Series relaunch* In 2012, master storyteller Saul Tanpepper released the riveting post-apocalyptic survival saga, GAMELAND. His wife refuses to speak to him because of it, and he worries that his son won't remember who he is when his seven-year sentence has been completed. Book Failsafe Codex

Book excerpt: No one ever truly escapes the arcade The thrilling saga continues in the second deadly installment of the best-selling post-apocalyptic cyberpunk series by Saul Tanpepper! They survived hacking themselves into the script. They leveled up without losing a single life. They even managed to get back out. That is, they thought they did. But no one ever truly escapes the arcade. Welcome back to GAMELAND. Are you ready to level up? A note about ZPOCALYPTO from series creator Saul Tanpepper Gameland is the post-apocalyptic dystopian world I first created in 2011 with the publication of the short story “Golgotha,” which later became the prequel to this bestselling cyberpunk series. Originally just called GAMELAND, the series was released in eight “episodic” installments. Readers quickly demanded more, and a “Season Two”, plus a number of standalone companion titles, were subsequently published. And still my readers wanted more. I’m happy to announce that at least two new spinoff series are now in the works. Both are set within the same terrifyingly all-too-plausible near-future world. To prepare for their upcoming release, I felt it was time to update the original series. Gaps have been filled in, loose ends tied up, and unresolved questions answered. With both seasons newly repackaged into one 14-episode collection, which now includes significantly refreshed and expanded content and gorgeous new covers, I am re-releasing the stories under new branding. The legacy series is now called ZPOCALYPTO. It and the spin-offs will hereafter be incorporated under the World of Gameland banner. “Golgotha” and all pre-existing companion titles and supplemental materials for the original series will be included within future ZPOCALYPTO episodes and boxsets, so you won’t miss a single word. But if you can’t wait to read the story that set this all in motion, you can find “Golgotha” in my short story collection, Shorting the Undead and Other Horrors. Now, if you’re a returning Gameland fan, I thank you for your continuing support. It is my hope that with this relaunch, you don’t just rediscover the thrills you experienced upon reading the original series, but that this resurrection further enriches your love and devotion to the world and its characters. At the very least, rereading it as we approach GAMELAND’s tenth anniversary will hopefully prepare you for what is to come next! So grab some snacks, settle into your comfy spot, and set your phone to “do not disturb.” Take my hand and hold on tight. It’s time to enter The Game. Happy reading, Saul
